“At the invitation of the Trio Haydée, I teamed up with the contemporary author & illustrator Diglee to create a new work for 'De lumières et de cieux embrasés', a programme made up entirely of pieces by female composers on the themes of night and day, life and death, love.. For our Aube, we follow a woman for whom the dawn brings painful childhood memories. Lasting around 7 minutes, the piece is constructed closely with the text, both structurally and in terms of the treatment of the voice, which favours supple, expressive melodic lines to highlight the words.” (Josephine Stephenson)

This single-movement work in the key of D has entered the repertoire as an essential Violin piece for the experienced musician.Adoration is a perennial favourite work of composer, Violinist, critic and writer Felix Borowski, with a beautiful melody that builds to ecstatic ending on high D. Borowski was born of Polish parents in England, but, after an invitation from American showman Florenz Ziegfeld, spent most of his life in Chicago where he taught at the Chicago Musical Conservatory and Northwestern University. He created the music collection at the Newberry Library there. He also edited the programmes of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, as well as composing and teaching privately.

In the complete works of Heinrich Schütz, performed by the Dresdner Kammerchor under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann and produced by Carus, the fifth installment presents the Cantiones Sacrae [SWV 53 93]. In 1625 during the Thirty Years' War Schütz published this collection as his opus 4. In the 40 Latin motets he used texts from the prayer book of Andreas Musculus, which is based on psalms and verses from the Song of Songs, as well as texts from the Gospels, devotional texts and various prayers. The fact that today these expressive prayers have not gained the popularity of Schütz's other great collections is due, not least, to the high demands which the composerplaces upon his performers. With the guiding principle "historically informed interpreted today," Hans-Christoph Rademann and the Dresdner Kammerchor present precisely the lesser-known works of Schütz on the highest artistic level as an open invitation for new discovery. The recorded performance of the complete works of Schütz is being produced in cooperation with MDR Figaro.

Written in 1885, the eight songs after texts by the now little-known poet Hermann von Gilm have a special place in Richard Strauss’ corpus of Lieder. For the first time, he composed an entire set of songs on texts by a single poet, collecting them into one opus that was also to appear in print. Some of the numbers in it, like “Zueignung,” “Die Nacht,” and “Allerseelen,” are among the most popular Strauss songs of all time, but the entire cycle with its well-planned structure is also worthy of closer examination and performance. The aspiring composer quite consciously aligns himself with the tradition ranging from Schubert to Wolf, choosing the highly Romantic subject of unrequited love and illuminating its most diverse facets. The primary source for the Henle Urtext edition is the first edition from 1887, which Strauss furnished with a dedication to the Royal Bavarian chamber singer Heinrich Vogl - a serious invitation to today’s male singers not to leave these wonderful Strauss songs solely to female singers!

Most tellingly, Christmas songs render the joy and anticipation of children at Christmastime. The children’s choir “SingsalaSing” of the Landesakademie for young musicians in Baden-Württemberg, Ochsenhausen, sings 26 traditional and new yuletide songs from Germany and neighboring countries. These are especially suited to children in elementary school. The colorful and diverse arrangements are by Bobby Fischer, Markus Munzer-Dorn, Veit Hübner, Christoph Müller. This CD is an invitation to children and their families to join in singing together during the Advent and Christmas seasons. This CD is part of the “Lieder project” which promotes and benefits singing with children. Thisproject presents texts, music and recordings of songs to sing. It emphasizes quality and is designed especially for children. The goal is to once again focus on singing together in families. To date, 100 solo singers, vocal ensemble, choirs, instrumentalists and over 300 children have offered their time and talents to the Carus Lieder project. Profits derived from the sale of books and CDs in the Lieder project have now reached 400,000 Euros these proceeds are being donated to causes which further singing with children.

Within the culture of songs written for 'Complaints Choirs', the lyric material is drawn from actual notes made by the residents of Folkestone about living in their town - its beauty, its community spirit - and of course its drawbacks.It has been purposely written to be able to be rehearsed and performed on a minimum ofrehearsal time, as the logistics of large-scale community events means that the singers andmusicians often come together only on the day of performance.The accompanying instrumental parts are straightforward, the role of the saxophone line being tosupport the vocal line most of the time. Future performances of the work could involvearrangement of the musical material for other instrumental forces or simply a keyboard or pianoaccompaniment.' - John Harle

Immediately after completing “St. Paul” in 1836, Mendelssohn mulled over the idea of composing a further oratorio. However a whole decade elapsed before the composition of “Elijah” which takes as itstheme the story of the Biblical prophet from the 1st Book of Kings. When he received the invitation to write a major work for the Birmingham Music Festival, Mendelssohn finally embarked on work on the oratorio.“Elijah” was premiered in 1846 in Birmingham with great success and has enjoyed great popularity ever since.Following the first performance, Mendelssohn undertook a revision of the oratorio inwhichwhole numbers were removed and new ones substituted. This is the version which was first heard in 1847 in London and which is still performed today.To mark the Mendelssohn anniversary year 2009, theMendelssohn specialist Douglass Seaton, Professor at Florida State University prepared a critical new edition of the oratorio.
