Shichi-Go-San : The Celebration for Children of 7, 5 and 3 Years of Age

In Japan, a traditional festival called "Shichi-Go-San" (Seven-Five-Three) is held on November 15th every year to wish for the wholesome growth of girls aged seven, boys aged five and children aged three. The composer imagined how a seven-year-old sister with five and three-year-old brothers would go through various happenings, have fun visiting a shrine and strengthen their bonds. Reflecting the meaning of its title, Shichi-Go-San uses a lot of irregular time signatures to form a witty and resplendent concert piece.

Tom Sawyer Suite : Five Scenes from Mark Twain Op. 27

During his childhood The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was the favourite book of the composer Franco Cesarini. With his memories of the magic of joy, fear and freedom, Cesarini seeks to bring the figures of the book to life musically in his Tom Sawyer Suite. Each of the first four movements describes a figure from the story. Tom Sawyer is depicted in the first movement, where the characteristic “cake walk” rhythm is used. The second movement depicts Huckleberry Finn. The third movement is slower, more expressively melancholic and is dedicated to Becky Thatcher. Then there is Injun Joe, who tries to catch Tom in the fourth movement with the fifth movement leading to a happyend.

Far From Here : Song Cycle for Chorus and Orchestra

Written for the Greenwich High School choir and orchestra, Emmy award-winning and Grammy-nominated musician, and GHS parent, Rob Mathes, wrote a song cycle entitled Far From Here as a tribute to the GHS students' and their upcoming graduation. The three movements include: Yesterday/My Home, Where Shall I Go?, You'll Find Me Singing, to create an impressive showcase for high school musicians.

In a story about friendly extraterrestrial visitors, John Williams' music captures the anticipation and excitement of this blockbuster movie, including the signature five-note motif used to communicate with the alien guests. Thefact that this is one of Mr. Williams' favorite Spielberg films clearly comes across in this unique and masterful soundtrack.

This piece attempts to portray atmospheric pictures through music. The opening section evokes the somewhat misty and hazy early morning atmosphere surrounding the ancient monument. When the band reaches its first dynamic climax it is as if the massive boulders are audible, even touchable through the use of minor 3rd chords. The main theme - constructed on the notes CAFBG symbolises the arrangement of the central boulders in the shape of a horseshoe, which forms the focal point of this huge collection of stones. Towards the end of the work you will experience a fantastic effect when five soloists play a five part hymn whilst other members of the band create a specialatmosphere by imitating a choir of monks and druids. A fantastic major new concert work for advanced bands.

De Ruigewaard : Introductie en variaties over het Dies Irae

De Ruigewaard is a large polder (reclaimed land protected by dykes) in the Dutch province of Groningen. Shortly after the land was reclaimed around 1500, a settlement was established at the location of the current village of Grijpskerk. This was the source of inspiration for this concert work, together with a 13th-century Gregorian theme - the Dies Irae - which is used as a leitmotiv.After the introduction follow five variations, in randon order - however, each one of them carries us back to a striking moment in the history of Grijpskerk, home of the Excelsior Christian Music Association (CMV), who commissioned this work on the occasion of its participation in theWMC in Kerkrade (the Netherlands) in 2013.
