Six Études, Op. 5 is a set of studies for Organ by Jeanne Demessieux , with a preface by Marcel Dupré. Peter Maxwell Davies: Naxos Quartet No.2 (Parts)

The second of the Quartets commissioned by the Naxos label was completed in January 2003. This work swings between nervous virtuosic energy to the serene calm of an extended Lento, with exotic harmonies reminiscent of Bartok, and is characterised by it's sharp and unpredictable contrasts. First performed by the Maggini Quartet on 11 July 2003 at the Pittville Pump Room, Cheltenham, as part of the Cheltenham International Festival. This is the set of parts. Frederic Chopin: Nocturnes

The Irishman John Field had already composed over 20 nocturnes, which presumably greatly influenced Chopin . The latter continued to develop the light, song-like Piano writing and created works whose dreamy, longing atmosphere came to embody Chopin ’s music. Johannes Brahms: Sonatas for Piano and Violin

Johannes Brahms began to manifest a keen interest in the genre of the violin sonata at an early age. In fall 1853 he offered the Leipzig publisher a violin sonata in a minor. The work was turned down, however, and the self-critical Brahms must have destroyed it himself later. He ultimately wrote his three major sonatas during his years of maturity: op. 78 in the summers of 1878/79, opp. 100 and 108 in the summer of 1886. The Scherzo in c minor was Brahms’ contribution to the violin sonata which he composed jointly with Robert Schumann and Albert Dietrich in 1853 as a surprise gift for the violinist Joseph Joachim, and which is known under the name “F. A. E. Sonata.”With its sharp contrasts between the furious Allegro and emotional Più moderato sections, the Scherzo piece is a beloved bravura showcase.

Vingt-quatre grande études paperback : and other works

Of this series of twenty-four études planned by Liszt only twelve were actually written, but the contemporary printed editions of the completed pieces (in the hope of a continuation) appeared with the series title '24 grandes études'. By publishing these 12 concert studies it makes the earlier and technically more difficult version of the Transcendental Studies available for the first time since 1911 for study by performers and those engaged in music research. Contrary to the 1911 edition among the volumes of the first complete Liszt edition, NLE will publish also the text variants of some studies, an album leaf in F sharp major in facsimile and in transcription considered asthe 13th study planned by Liszt for the series, and the earlier versions of so-called Mazeppa and Ab irato studies. In the volume will be published the puzzling album leaf, the so-called 'Prélude omnitonique' and some similar album leaves, too.Territorial restrictions may apply. Please ask before ordering.

A very short list of the films for which this award-winning composer created soundtracks includes Citizen Kane, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Vertigo, Jason and Argonauts, Fahrenheit 451, Obsession and Taxi Driver. He had a long and fertile association with Alfred Hitchcock during the most productive period of Hitchcock’s career and with Orson Welles from the time of the Mercury Theatre on the Air. In addition to his conducting and composing work for the entertainment world, Herrmann wrote concert pieces, including a symphony, opera and cantata.

They produced leaflets protesting against the National Socialist government of Germany in 1942-3 until they were arrested and guillotined.?Soar to Heaven? follows two characters, Wu and Zhou, involved on opposite sides of the Cultural Revolution in China.?The Oxford Revolution? tells the story of James Meredith, who fought a lonely battle against segregation and racial prejudice to become the first black student to enrol at ?Ole Miss?, the University of Mississippi, in the USA.Librettist's Note.There are, inevitably and properly, some differences between the original libretto and what Max ultimately set to music. Most of these are insignificant, but all the Latin texts in the opera were added by Max, and texts for the alternating black / white choruses (Scene 19) and final chorus (Scene 28) were written by him.

John Joubert: String Quartet No.2 Op.91 (Parts)

Though conceived as four separate movements, my second string quartet has a single motif which is common to them all. This is the three-note "Muss es sein?" from Beethoven's last quartet, Op. 135. But whereas Beethoven's theme is notated G E A flat, thus giving it an F minor connotation, I have sued an alternative spelling - G E G sharp - which suggests an ambiguous E minor-major. This ambiguity, in fact, becomes the tonal basis of the whole work, only to be resolved at the end of the final movement.Each movement begins with a variant of the basic motif on the cello. The first has the original form of the theme, while the second has a "majorised" version which is also expressed as a chord. The third movement, with its "scherzoid" middle section, reverts to the major-minor ambiguity of the first, and the finale begins with the "majorised" version as an ostinato accompaniment on pizzicato cello.The slow movement is sub-titled "In memoriam DSCH" and concludes with a quotation of Shostakovich's motto - D E flat C B - which is basically the same as Beethoven's with the addition of one note.This is not to imply that the work contains no other thematic material. One important theme, a rising fifth and a second, is also common to three of the movements, and is ultimately derived from my first quartet, Op. 1 of 27 years earlier, to which this second contribution to the form is in many ways like a sequel. Like the earlier work, too, this quartet is dedicated to my wife.

Animals In Concert

Animals In Concert - Three pieces for Piano solo by Per Nørgård. Programme Note  1. A Tortoise´s Tango (1984) - dur.: 4´  2. Light of a Night - Paul meets bird (1989) - dur.: 6´  3. Hermit Crab Tango - Esperanza (1997) - dur.: 5´   The pieces can be performed together or one by one. In the1980s, quite a few "finds" turned up in Per Nørgård's music. The material could be, say, a number of song birds' equilibrist melodic lines, the overtones of the ocean surf, or waltzing themes by the schizophrenic artist Adolf Wölfli (1864-1930). Or again, as heard here, it can be the rhythms and motifs of the tango and a Beatles song (with bird), explored in three independent piano pieces that form the Animals in Concert suite, about which the composer writes:  "A Tortoise´s Tango": The tortoise as tango dancer must presumably possess certain rhythmic peculiarities, which I have chosen to express by letting the tune of the tortoise shuffle broadly, tripartite through the strict four partite time of tango.  Tortoise Tango was the original title of this piece, "written for Achilles" (the pianist Yvar Mikhashoff), for his so called tango project", including new tangos for piano by composers from all over the world.  "Light of a Night (Paul meets bird)" was commissioned by pianist Aki Takahashi. It is a "reworked" arrangement for piano of the Beatles song "Blackbird". As some of us will recall, the Beatles on "The White Album" let the beautiful song to the blackbird be accompanied by an (apparently) live blackbird song. It is this authentic bird-motif world that in "Light of a Night" weaves itself into the Beatles melody and in turn is gradually infected by it, so that a completely new third entity ensues: a kind of Bird-rock ballad (or maybe it is a Beatle-bird?).  "Hermit Crab Tango (Esperanza)": The tango situation is quite special for a Hermit Crab. It is a well-known fact that the hermit crab - this soft animal - must run the gauntlet among the many perils at the bottom of the sea when it must move hose. I have chosen to express the angers by a tango pattern - sharp as a cactus - through which the tune, optimistic, slips to its new shelter. I have borrowed the tune from songwriter Hanne Methling´s "Introduction": ´I want to get through this time!' she sings in a ecstatically ascending melody line - and I believe that these words must correspond very well to the mood of the hermit crab: ´Esperanza´- the green runners of hope wind among the latticework formed by the tango rows.
