Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs III Proceedings of the 3rd International Workshop on Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs (PKW 2017) February 22-24

Since the first implementation by Electricité de France on the Goulours dam (France) in 2006 the Piano Key Weir has become a more and more applied solution to increase the discharge capacity of existing spillways. In parallel several new large dam projects have been built with such a flood control structure usually in combination with gates. Today more than 25 Piano Key Weirs are in operation or under construction all over the world. More than 15 years of research and development have enabled detailed investigations of the hydraulic and structural behaviour of the Piano Key Weir complex structure and have provided more and more accurate design equations. Following the proceedings of the first two workshops held in Liege (Belgium – 2011) and Paris (France – 2013) Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs III collects the contributions presented by people with varied background from researchers to practitioners at the 3rd International Workshop on Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs - PKW 2017 (22-24 February 2017 Qui Nhon Vietnam). The papers reviewed and accepted by an International Scientific Committee summarize the current state-of-the-art on Piano Key Weirs from a theoretical to a practical point of view and present most of the main projects in operation or under construction. Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs III is thus a reference for students practitioners and researchers interested in Dams Engineering. | Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs III Proceedings of the 3rd International Workshop on Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs (PKW 2017) February 22-24

The BUGS Book A Practical Introduction to Bayesian Analysis

The BUGS Book A Practical Introduction to Bayesian Analysis

Bayesian statistical methods have become widely used for data analysis and modelling in recent years and the BUGS software has become the most popular software for Bayesian analysis worldwide. Authored by the team that originally developed this software The BUGS Book provides a practical introduction to this program and its use. The text presents complete coverage of all the functionalities of BUGS including prediction missing data model criticism and prior sensitivity. It also features a large number of worked examples and a wide range of applications from various disciplines. The book introduces regression models techniques for criticism and comparison and a wide range of modelling issues before going into the vital area of hierarchical models one of the most common applications of Bayesian methods. It deals with essentials of modelling without getting bogged down in complexity. The book emphasises model criticism model comparison sensitivity analysis to alternative priors and thoughtful choice of prior distributions all those aspects of the art of modelling that are easily overlooked in more theoretical expositions. More pragmatic than ideological the authors systematically work through the large range of tricks that reveal the real power of the BUGS software for example dealing with missing data censoring grouped data prediction ranking parameter constraints and so on. Many of the examples are biostatistical but they do not require domain knowledge and are generalisable to a wide range of other application areas. Full code and data for examples exercises and some solutions can be found on the book‘s website. | The BUGS Book A Practical Introduction to Bayesian Analysis

The Routledge Handbook of Bodily Awareness

The Routledge Handbook of Bodily Awareness

Bodily awareness is one of the most interesting and enigmatic forms of experience. Our earliest and most pervasive form of conscious experience it also arguably remains the most private. Bodily awareness has also long played a central role in the study of the mind and self-consciousness and is fundamental to much current philosophical and psychological research. The Routledge Handbook of Bodily Awareness is an outstanding reference source to this fascinating subject. Comprising over thirty chapters by an international team of contributors the Handbook is divided into seven parts: Epistemology and Metaphysics Historical Issues Body Representation Sensing the Body Dynamics Pathology Interaction Within these sections specific topics covered include bodily ownership personal identity self-consciousness body modelling in robot design body illusions touch proprioception phantom limb syndrome pain eating disorders out-of-body experiences and virtual reality. The handbook features specially commissioned contributions from researchers in a wide array of disciplines whilst being accessible to readers with any disciplinary background. It also includes an interdisciplinary introduction written by the editors tying together the central themes with particular attention to the interaction between conceptual technological and empirical issues. The Routledge Handbook of Bodily Awareness will be of great interest to those in a wide variety of philosophical subdisciplines as well as those in psychology cognitive science sociology and related subjects.

The Routledge Handbook of Translation Interpreting and Crisis

The Routledge Handbook of Translation Interpreting and Crisis

This handbook offers a broad-ranging overview of the study of translating and interpreting in conflict and crisis settings and takes the field in new directions. Covering a wide selection of multimodal contexts that build on the fundamentals of translation interpreting and their in-between hybrid forms of mediation the handbook is divided into four parts. The opening part covers perspectives on policy and practices whether contemporary or historical and cases truly span the globe from Peru and Brazil over Belgium and Sierra Leone to Australia Japan and Hong Kong. International developments require profound considerations about the professionalisation of access to language in times of crises not least in contexts of humanitarian negotiation or conflict zone interpreting–these form the second part. The subsequent part deals with spheres of community in which language needs are positioned within frames of agency positionality and trust and the challenges that these face. The contributions build on cases where interpreters act as catalysts for translation needs in settings of humanitarian aid and beyond. The final part considers language strategies and solutions in crises. This handbook is the essential guide to translation and interpreting in conflict and crisis settings for advanced students and researchers of translation and interpreting studies and will be of wide interest in peace studies political science and beyond. | The Routledge Handbook of Translation Interpreting and Crisis
