Hybrid Threats Cyberterrorism and Cyberwarfare

Hybrid Threats Cyberterrorism and Cyberwarfare

Nowadays in cyberspace there is a burst of information to which everyone has access. However apart from the advantages the internet offers it also hides numerous dangers for both people and nations. Cyberspace has a dark side including terrorism bullying and other types of violence. Cyberwarfare is a kind of virtual war that causes the same destruction that a physical war would also do. A hybrid threat is an umbrella term encompassing a wide variety of existing adverse circumstances and actions such as terrorism migration piracy corruption ethnic conflict etc. and is not exclusively a tool of asymmetric or non-state actors but can be applied by state and non-state actors alike. ‘Cyberconflict’ and ‘cyberwar’ serve as examples of the use of new technologies within the scope of hybrid threats. Cyberwar basically refers to a sustained computer-based cyberattack by a state against the information technology (IT) infrastructure of a target state. On the other hand cybersecurity is a major factor that shapes productivity and efficiency of the modern industry in both technical and economic terms. The book discusses and analyses current posture of cyberterrorism cyberwarfare and hybrid threats—sector-specific cyberattacks that have the form of cyberterrorism and represents the recent actions that members of the European Union (EU) the United States and other nations have taken in order to strengthen their systems against such attacks. There has never been a higher risk of a major catastrophe as a result of the rise in offensive cyberactivity particularly the possibility of cyber–physical strikes against critical services. Recent cyberattacks against critical infrastructure along with the continuous migration crisis have been the main driving forces that led to the decision to publish this book. | Hybrid Threats Cyberterrorism and Cyberwarfare

Hybrid Drawing Techniques for Interior Design

Programming for Hybrid Multi/Manycore MPP Systems

Programming for Hybrid Multi/Manycore MPP Systems

Ask not what your compiler can do for you ask what you can do for your compiler. John Levesque Director of Cray’s Supercomputing Centers of ExcellenceThe next decade of computationally intense computing lies with more powerful multi/manycore nodes where processors share a large memory space. These nodes will be the building block for systems that range from a single node workstation up to systems approaching the exaflop regime. The node itself will consist of 10’s to 100’s of MIMD (multiple instruction multiple data) processing units with SIMD (single instruction multiple data) parallel instructions. Since a standard affordable memory architecture will not be able to supply the bandwidth required by these cores new memory organizations will be introduced. These new node architectures will represent a significant challenge to application developers. Programming for Hybrid Multi/Manycore MPP Systems attempts to briefly describe the current state-of-the-art in programming these systems and proposes an approach for developing a performance-portable application that can effectively utilize all of these systems from a single application. The book starts with a strategy for optimizing an application for multi/manycore architectures. It then looks at the three typical architectures covering their advantages and disadvantages. The next section of the book explores the other important component of the target—the compiler. The compiler will ultimately convert the input language to executable code on the target and the book explores how to make the compiler do what we want. The book then talks about gathering runtime statistics from running the application on the important problem sets previously discussed. How best to utilize available memory bandwidth and virtualization is covered next along with hybridization of a program. The last part of the book includes several major applications and examines future hardware advancements and how the application developer may prepare for those advancements.

Quantum Optomechanics

Quantum Optomechanics

Written by leading experimentalist Warwick P. Bowen and prominent theoretician Gerard J. Milburn Quantum Optomechanics discusses modern developments in this novel field from experimental and theoretical standpoints. The authors share their insight on a range of important topics including optomechanical cooling and entanglement; quantum limits on measurement precision and how to overcome them via back-action evading measurements; feedback control; single photon and nonlinear optomechanics; optomechanical synchronization; coupling of optomechanical systems to microwave circuits and two-level systems such as atoms and superconducting qubits; and optomechanical tests of gravitational decoherence. The book first introduces the basic physics of quantum harmonic oscillators and their interactions with their environment. It next discusses the radiation pressure interaction between light and matter deriving common Hamiltonians used in quantum optomechanics. It then focuses on the linearized regime of quantum optomechanics before exploring scenarios where the simple linearized picture of quantum optomechanics no longer holds. The authors move on to hybrid optomechanical systems in which the canonical quantum optomechanical system is coupled to another quantum object. They explain how an alternative form of a hybrid optomechanical system leads to the phenomenon of synchronization. They also consider the impact of quantum optomechanics on tests of gravitational physics.

The Chronicle of a People's War: The Military and Strategic History of the Cambodian Civil War 1979–1991

The Chronicle of a People's War: The Military and Strategic History of the Cambodian Civil War 1979–1991

The Chronicle of a People's War: The Military and Strategic History of the Cambodian Civil War 1979–1991 narrates the military and strategic history of the Cambodian Civil War especially the People’s Republic of Kampuchea (PRK) from when it deposed the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime in 1979 until the political settlement in 1991. The PRK survived in the face of a fierce insurgency due to three factors: an appealing and reasonably well-implemented political program extensive political indoctrination and the use of a hybrid army. In this hybrid organization the PRK relied on both its professional conventional army and the militia-like territorial army. This latter type was lightly equipped and most soldiers were not professional. Yet the militia made up for these weaknesses with its intimate knowledge of the local terrain and its political affinity with the local people. These two advantages are keys to victory in the context of counterinsurgency warfare. The narrative and critical analysis is driven by extensive interviews and primary source archives that have never been accessed before by any scholar including interviews with former veterans (battalion commanders brigade commanders division commanders commanders of provincial military commands commanders of military regions and deputy chiefs of staff) articles in the People’s Army from 1979 to 1991 battlefield footage battlefield video reports newsreel propaganda video and official publications of the Cambodian Institute of Military History.

The book provides an informative examination of the possibilities for broadening the engineering applications of elastomer composites through using various types of hybrid fillers ferrites and ceramics and also examines their synthesis and characterization. It discusses new hybrid fillers that have been synthesized by different techniques e. g. impregnation of different substrates (carbon black conductive carbon black activated carbons etc. ) with silica or magnetite. These new fillers have been thoroughly characterized by standard techniques and by up-to-date methods such as energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM-EDX) atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The effect of those fillers upon the curing properties mechanical and dynamic parameters electrical conductivity and dielectric and microwave characteristics of elastomer-based composites is discussed in detail in this volume. The book also covers the influence of various types of ceramics (SiC B4C and TiB2) and barium and strontium hexaferrites upon the aforementioned properties of rubber composites in conjunction with a view toward solutions for environmental problems caused by waste tires. The book shows that pyrolysis-cum-water vapor is a suitable and environmentally friendly method for the conversion of the waste green tires into useful carbon-silica hybrid fillers. The properties of elastomer-based composites comprising different types of nanostructures (fullerenes carbon nanotubes graphene nanoplatelets) modified activated carbons and calcined kaolin are also discussed. Special attention is paid to composites with lower levels of zinc oxide. The volume provides an abundance of knowledge on the detailed characterization of these fillers and on the curing mechanical dynamic mechanical and dielectric and microwave properties of the elastomeric composites. The book surveys the most recent research activities of the authors which will make it a vital reference source for scientists in both the academic and industrial sectors as well as for individuals who are interested in rubber materials. It will be very useful for students especially PhD students scientists lecturers and engineers working or doing research in the field of polymer materials science elastomer-based composites and nanocomposites and their engineering applications in the production of microwave absorbers and electromagnetic waves shielding materials materials for electronics devices and telecommunications. | Elastomer-Based Composite Materials Mechanical Dynamic and Microwave Properties and Engineering Applications
