Peaky Blinders: Mastermind is a unique gangster puzzle and adventure game, the action of which was set in the early 1920s and focuses on the underworld of the city of Birmingham. The independent British development team FuturLab is responsible for creating the production, known mainly for the well-received shoot 'em up Velocity and Velocity 2X. The title is based on the popular sensational series Peaky Blinders, created by BBC TV and Netflix, which debuted in 2013.
Peaky Blinders: Mastermind is the prequel to the first season of the series and takes place in 1919. While playing, we control members of the Shelby gangster family - Tommy, Arthur, Polly, John, Ada and Finn, who are well known from the small screen. The main storyline of the title takes place around a cunning plan that we must stop, and the goal of which is to deprive Shelby of his previous influence and connections in the Birmingham criminal world. The campaign begins with the mysterious murder of a Chinese opium dealer. Steven Knight, co-creator and originator of the television series, helped with the construction of the Peaky Blinders: Mastermind script.
Despite the theme and setting, Peaky Blinders: Mastermind is not a gangster tactical game or shooter. The production offers a unique gameplay and a number of missions, consisting of logical puzzles that we solve by manipulating time. The three-dimensional world of the title is presented in an isometric view.
While playing, we control six representatives of the Shelby family. Each of them has different skills, such as intimidation, bribery, stealth and breaking down doors. The whole game takes place in the head of Tommy, the head of the Shelby family, who plans to make another jump or lucrative action. During the mission, players move a specific hero to a selected position and instruct him, e.g. to open a door. Then, using the transparent timeline at the bottom of the screen, they take control of the next character using the passage that is open to them.
Scenarios in Peaky Blinders: Mastermind require us to be able to plan individual actions of heroes and their synchronization, as well as use special abilities in various ways and the ability to predict how they will affect each other. It is also up to the players whether they choose silent and hidden solutions to problems, or use brute force. When performing tasks, we have unlimited possibilities for experimenting and correcting any mistakes.
