Planets under Attack is a space strategy in a slightly comic style. The game was produced by the Russian studio Targem Games. This team has such titles as, among others, Battle Mages, Insane 2 and, above all, Hard Truck: Apocalypse.
Players take command of a star armada, and their task is, of course, to conquer the entire galaxy. In the campaign mode, we can play 32 missions. Each of them offers tons of different planets to conquer and challenges to complete. We will have to defend the planets until reinforcements are made, explore unexplored regions of space or conquer planets, and then prepare them for a counterattack by enemies. For our successes, we are rewarded with points that allow us to unlock access to new technologies. There are three difficulty levels and two different factions to choose from.
Gaining control of each new planet increases the growth rate of funds and resources, but at the same time can turn out to be quite a risk. Our rivals will not stand with their arms folded and watch us take over their territories. Instead, they always try to conquer part of our empire themselves. Virtual war is so dynamic that its course can sometimes surprise players.
The cartoony graphics may at first glance suggest simple gameplay mechanics, but in reality Planets under Attack boasts a lot of strategic and tactical depth. The key role is played, among others, by reconnaissance, proper positioning of units or preparation of planetary defense. Often times, important things are happening in several places in the galaxy at the same time, so lightning-fast thinking and reacting quickly are also worth the price.
In addition to the solo campaign, the game also offers an online mode. In it, up to four players can fight each other or join forces in a clash with artificial intelligence. The authors took care of rich starting options, thanks to which we can adjust the type of gameplay and the galaxy map to our individual needs.
