Hernö High Coast Terroir Gin 2018 Hernö is the first dedicated gin distillery in Sweden, and is located in Dala on the high coast of Sweden. They only produce organic, artisanal gins, which are inspired by the natural beauty of Sweden. In 2016 Hernö launched their High Coast Terroir series. Each year they select different botanicals sourced from the High Coast of Sweden (to the north of Stockholm, on the Gulf of Bothnia).  For their 2018 edition, they differed their base spirit as well as the botanicals chosen. In this edition their bases partially comes from a malt base produced by one of their neighbours, the Lockeby Brewery. The botanicals from the High Coast that they used in this edition are: Elderflower, Juniper, Rowan Berries and Spruce Shoots. The resulting gin offers an aroma which is crisp, with the juniper coming through first, followed by an array of floral notes. There is a base note from the malt, and fresh citrus tones. On the palate there is a definite floral complexity, which blends with the juniper, somewhat softening it. The rowan lends a freshness to it. As the flavours develop in the mouth the elderflower comes forward, with a little warmth with peppery notes. The spruce adds a gentle sweetness. Overall this is a pleasure on the taste buds, with the flavours being balanced perfectly. More from Hernö Perfect Serve This is truly a special gin, and one we highly recommend enjoyed as it was designed to be. Take a rocks glass and add a large ice cube, and complete with 50ml of the gin. No garnish needed with this one!  However if you like your drinks longer, it makes an equally delicious Gin & Tonic. Take a large glass filled with ice and add 50ml of the gin. Gently pour over 150ml of your chosen tonic (we liked this with East Imperial Tonic Water). Garnish with a few juniper berries.

Hernö Sipping Gin 2021 1.5 Brännland Ice Cider Cask 50cl Hernö is the first dedicated gin distillery in Sweden, and is located in Dala on the high coast of Sweden. They only produce organic, artisanal gins, which are inspired by the natural beauty of Sweden. The Hernö Sipping gin series from was started in 2016 as a way to help strengthen the hospitality industry in the High Coast of Sweden. Whilst a beautiful area - it offers unique challenges to business located there. From the winter weather extremes to the long distances, combined with a sparsley populated region. In an attempt to attract visitors to the High Coast Whisky Festival and Hernö Gin Open House, Jon Hillgren (Master Distiller) struck on the idea of limited edition bottlings. These would be primarily to the attendees of the events. Any remaining would then be sold through the Swedish liquor stores (Systembolaget). An even smaller number were also made available for export. Now in their fifth year, and fifth release, edition 1.5 has a limited release of 1450 bottles (1,000 of which were exclusive to the Swedish market). These releases have fast proved popular, and become collectors editions. So grab a bottle whilst you can! With this edition they took their classic (and much awarded) Hernö Gin and matured it for 60 days in casks which previously held Brännland Ice Cider. Barrique. Prior to this, these casks came from the French Wine region of Sauternes. It's this cask aging which gives the gin its delightful golden colour. On the nose there is a powerful aroma of oak, which is joined by juniper, floral hebal notes of meadowsweet and a deep undertone of tart green apple peel. The flavours have a strong influence from both juniper and oak. However these are balanced with the meadowsweet, black pepper and a touch of citrus. These all merge perfectly, balancing each other. As the gin moves towards its finish, its dryness comes through with spices, the juniper comes forward again too and is joined by a hint of vanilla. With this edition they took their classic (and much awarded) Hernö Old Tom Gin and matured it for 60 days in casks which previously held Caves Santa Maria Port. Hernö felt this amount of time ensured the perfect balance between port and gin. The botanicals used in their base Old Tom gin haven't changed, and are Juniper berries, coriander seeds, black pepper, cassia bark, vanilla, lingonberries, meadowsweet and lemon peel. On the nose the oak from the casks comes through initially, which is followed by floral notes. These join with almond, buttery caramel and vanilla. Behind this lies a gentle, but noticeable piney juniper. The flavour initially is both floral and juniper forward, which gives a delicious balance on the palate. As the drink developes a nuttiness and rich fruit flavour of dates come through. A little peppery spice balances against a delicate sweetness. The finish brings forward citrus notes, meadowsweet and juniper - and ends with a lingering spicy oakiness. More from Hernö Perfect Serve This is truly a special gin, and one we highly recommend enjoyed as it was designed to be. Take a rocks glass and add a large ice cube, and complete with 50ml of the gin. No garnish needed with this one! Sip, and enjoy slowly. It however does also work in the mix, and is delicious as a longer drink when mixed with sparkling lemonade. Try 60ml of the gin over ice and fill the glass with the lemonade. Garnish with a lemon wedge.

Hernö Navy Strength Gin Hernö is the first dedicated gin distillery in Sweden, and is located in Dala on the high coast of Sweden. They only produce organic, artisanal gins, which are inspired by the natural beauty of Sweden. To make their Navy Strength gin, Hernö use the same distilled gin as Hernö Gin. However, they only distill it to an abv of 57%. This leads to a difference in aroma and taste, having an overall richer flavour with bolder juniper, coriander and citrus. On the nose the juniper is strong, and immediately greets you. This follows with citrus and fresh peppery notes. On the palate, you're again greeted initially with a crip piney juniper flavour. This is joined by spicy citrus, and a hint of spring floral notes. The finish retains the spice and pepper, leaving a deliciously smooth and warm feeling in the mouth. It also holds its own really well in cocktails, and works particularly well in a Martinez.

Hernö Juniper Cask Gin Hernö is the first dedicated gin distillery in Sweden, and is located in Dala on the high coast of Sweden. They only produce organic, artisanal gins, which are inspired by the natural beauty of Sweden. Their Juniper Cask Gin is the first in the world to be matured on juniper wood casks. Using the same distilled gin as their signature Hernö Gin, they dilute it to 47% ABV. This is then matured for 30 days in juniper wood casks. This time in the casks maturing gives an intense juniper note which is finished with a long and harmonious hint of citrus peel. On the nose this gin really gives across a fresh woodiness, with pine from juniper. Behind this ligers soft citrus blossom. In the mouth it has a thick texture, which coats the mouth leaving it a little dry. A heavy juniper flavour, and herbal pepper entice the tongue before giving way to a mild vanilla sweetness. The finish brings a littler citrus and floral notes from coriander. The finish is long with juniper dominating. This realy needs a neutral tonic such as Three Cents Tonic water to ensure the nuances of this gin can be enjoyed. Pour 50ml into a glass filled with ice and top up with 150ml of the tonic. Hernö Sipping Gin 2019 1.3 Ardbeg Cask Hernö is de eerste toegewijde ginstokerij in Zweden en is gevestigd in Dala aan de hoge kust van Zweden. Ze produceren alleen biologische, ambachtelijke gins, die geïnspireerd zijn op de natuurlijke schoonheid van Zweden. De Hernö Sipping gin-serie van is in 2016 gestart als een manier om de horeca in de Hoge Kust van Zweden te helpen versterken. Hoewel het een prachtig gebied is, biedt het unieke uitdagingen voor bedrijven die daar gevestigd zijn. Van de extreme weersomstandigheden in de winter tot de lange afstanden, gecombineerd met een dunbevolkt gebied. In een poging bezoekers naar het High Coast Whisky Festival en Hernö Gin Open House te lokken, kwam Jon Hillgren (Master Distiller) op het idee van bottelingen in beperkte oplage. Deze zijn in de eerste plaats bedoeld voor de bezoekers van de evenementen. De rest zou dan via de Zweedse slijterijen (Systembolaget) worden verkocht. Een nog kleiner aantal werd ook voor export beschikbaar gesteld. Nu in hun derde jaar en derde release, editie 1.3 heeft een beperkte release van 1904 flessen. 1600 hiervan exclusief voor de Zweedse markt. Deze releases zijn snel populair gebleken en zijn collectorsedities geworden. Dus pak een fles nu het nog kan! Met deze editie namen ze hun klassieke (en veel bekroonde) Hernö Gin en lieten deze rijpen in vaten die voorheen Ardbeg-whisky bevatten. De sipping-serie is ontworpen, zoals de naam al doet vermoeden, om puur over ijs te worden genoten. Deze editie heeft een lichte strokleur, die afkomstig is van het vat. Het aroma heeft prominente jeneverbes noten, met een vleugje rokerigheid en verleidelijke, elegante bloemige aroma's en een delicate hint van vanille. Bij het drinken komt deze gin reallty goed tot zijn recht. Verleidelijk glad, het heeft een romige mond-coating. De gin heeft een hartige smaak, met jeneverbes die er meteen vanaf komt en wordt gecombineerd met een vleugje eikenhouten peper. Terwijl de gin opwarmt in de mond, komen ook peer, een vleugje toffee-appel en een turfachtige rokerigheid door. De smaken blijven heerlijk hangen in de mond en eindigen met een tintelend vleugje zout op de tong.
