Rebel Straight Bourbon Whiskey - Cognac Barrel Finish 70cl

Rebel Straight Bourbon Whiskey - Cognac Barrel Finish 70cl

Rebel Straight Bourbon Whiskey - Cognac Barrel Finish Founded in 1849 by William Larue Weller, Rebel have been defying trends since the very beginning. At that time the everyone was creating bourbon using a rye mashbill. They decided to do things differently, and pioneered wheat-based bourbon.  Now, over 170 years later, they continue to defy trends - whilst also winning awards with their wheated recipe.   There are a number of requirements for a Bourbon to be labelled as a 'straight bourbon'. They need to have been aged for a minimum of two years (and if under four, the age must be shown), and not have any added colouring, flavouring or other spirits For their Cognac Barrel Finish (which is produced exclusively for the EU market), they take their original Rebel Straight Bourbon (which is aged for at least 4 years in American Oak), and give it a final ageing in cognac barrels for a further 6 months. This adds additional depth and flavour to the already delicious Bourbon! It's colour is a bright amber, which gives aromas full of ripe fruite and berries and sweet honey. Vanilla, caramel and a hint of oak come through too. The flavour remains full, like the original. Dried fruits, rich plums, sultanas and vanilla all come through. It finishes with a defined warmth and lingers pleasantly on the palate. More from Rebel Perfect Serve This is deliciously smooth, and we feel best enjoyed neat, on the rocks (so as to appreciate the nuances from the cognac barrel finish).

Eagle Rare Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey 70cl

Eagle Rare Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey 70cl

Eagle Rare Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey This premium Bourbon is produced at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. This is the oldest continuously operating distillery in America.... so they know a thing or two about producing Bourbon Whiskey! The American bald eagle symbolised on the front gives an indication as to the contents of the bottle. This bird of prey is the symbol of American freedon and independence. It symbolises the rarity of the Bourbon, released only in limited quantities, and known as one of America's best bourbons. In fact it is the only Bourbon to receive a Double Gold medal five times at the renowned World Spirits Competition in San Francisco! There are a number of requirements for a Bourbon to be labelled as a 'straight bourbon'. They need to have been aged for a minimum of two years (and if under four, the age must be shown), and not have any added colouring, flavouring or other spirits. Eagle Rare has been aged for at least ten years, with each barrel being carefully selected   This attention to detail, and long ageing process ensures that this is definitely a rare, and delicious Bourbon.  It has a complex nose, with delicious aromas of toffee - joined by hints of orange peel, herbs, honey, and warming leather and oak. On the palate the taste is dry and bold. A delicate touch of red fruits and honey rounds out the candied almonds and distinctive rich cocoa. It finishes with lingering flavours of vanilla and more spice from the oak. Perfect Serve Whilst this is easy to enjoy as you would most bourbons, we liked this with just a dash of water. This seemed to open up the flavours - and brought the drink alive.

Mary Read Rum 70cl

Mary Read Rum 70cl

Mary Read Rum Named after a famous pirate, Mary Read rum is a 100% Dutch, handmade spiced rum - made with organic, natural ingredients. Mary Read herself was born in the UK in 1685, and was one of only two females to be convicted of piracy at the height of the "Golden Age of Piracy" (1650's - 1730's). She was raised by her mother as a boy so that she could receive her fathers inheritance. She worked as a skipper's servant in the English Navy under the name of Mark,  and fought against the French in the War of the Spanish Succession. This resulted in her arriving in Belgium where she met and fell in love with a Flemish colleague in the cavalry. After marrying, they started the inn De Drie Hoefijzers, near the Castle of Breda. Sadly, after a number of succesful years her husband was stabbed and died. Once again Mary took on the name of Mark and enlisted as a man in the Dutch Navy and left for the West Indies. On the way they were ambushed by pirates - and, eventually Mary become known as Bloody Mary.  Mary died in 1721, after being captured in Jamaica with the entire crew and sentenced to death. As a tribute to Mary Read, its fitting that this is a robust rum. It is slightly sweet and is deliciously creamy in its taste. It has delicious spice flavours coming from cinnamon, allspice, mace and also hints of butterscotch. Perfect Serve This is a delicious and versatile rum which works perfectly enjoyed on its own, over ice, or in the mix. Try mixing 50ml of the rum with 150ml of Cola (or even Cherry Cola), for a deliciously refreshing longer drink. Include lots of ice and garnish with a wedge of lime.

Havana Club Añejo 7 Años Rum 70cl

Havana Club Añejo 7 Años Rum 70cl

Havana Club Añejo 7 Años Rum Havana Club hails from Cuba and is a representation of the island’s rich heritage. Rum is an essential part of the Cuban culture and the Maestros del Ron Cubano make Havana Club following traditional Cuban rum making methods. An aspiring Maetro will spend 15 years training under the supervision of the senior Maestro del Ron Cubano to become a true master of their craft. Its not something you can learn from books, it's "a cultural heritage, passed on from Maestro to Maestro’’ Havana Club use what nature gave to Cuba, ‘the isle of rum’. The rich sugar cane, fertile soil and the tropical climate is what makes their rum so special, and what makes it difficult to replicate the distinctive taste outside of Cuba. Described as "The very essence of Cuban rum', their 7 year dark rum is highly versatile. It's allowed to mature in ex-Bourbon barrels, and truly showcases the rich natural flavours of Cuba. The cuban terroir comes through with aromatic tobacco, sweet tropical fruits, molasses, spices, and vanilla from the continuous ageing process, enhanced by the slow release of aromas. More from Havana Club Perfect Serve  Whilst it was initially created for sipping neat, it can also be enjoyed on the rocks, served simply with a mixer such as cola but also adds a distinct, delicious flavour to cocktails.  We love this in an Old Fashioned Cocktail. In a rocks glass mix a teaspoon of white sugar and two dashes of Angostura Bitters. Then add 50ml of Havana Club 7 and stir again. Add a few cubes of ice and stir for 20 seconds to chill the drink, garnish with a twist of orange peel and enjoy!

Zuidam Dutch Courage Dry Gin 1L

Zuidam Dutch Courage Dry Gin 1L

Zuidam Dutch Courage Dry Gin Not only do the Zuidam Distillers have a great family of gins under the Dutch Courage label, but they are also hand-made by two generations of distillers, father Fred and son Patrick van Zuidam The term Dutch Courage dates back to the 17th century. It was noted the British saw the effects that drinking the typically Dutch Genever (the precursor to modern gin) had on the Dutch - giving courage before a battle. The term "Dutch Courage" came about.... this may not be 100% true.... but it makes for a great story! So... whilst Zuidam's gins won't necessarily fill you with courage, we certainly believe they will give you a superb drink! Their core gin is made with nine carefully chosen botanicals from around the world ( Angelica, Cardamom, Coriander, Juniper, Lemon, Licorice, Orange, Orris Root and Vanilla). This gives a perfectly layered gin. The initial nose is full of pine and citrus, and a touch of exotic spice from coriander. It entices into the drink - and gives a classic gin aroma. The taste starts full of citrus again, but has notes of spice to it. Violet, anise and juniper (with its pine flavour) also make an appearance. As the drink finishes in the mouth there are flavours of nuts which come through, specifically nutmeg and walnuts. It clears the palate nicely - not overly lingering, and leads this to being a deliciously dry, and easy to drink gin. Read more about Zuidam Perfect Serve Fairly classic gin flavours mean this gin works well for experimenting with your favourite tonic. We do like this one with Fever-Tree Indian Tonic though. 50ml of the gin to 150ml of tonic works well. Plenty of ice, and a citrus garnish. Being slightly stronger, this also holds its flavour and works well in cocktails. We particularly liked this in a French 75.

Plantation XO 20th Anniversary Rum 70cl

Plantation XO 20th Anniversary Rum 70cl

Plantation XO 20th Anniversary Rum This rum is part of Plantation’s Signature Blends range. A series of rums from the Caribbean and South pacific that are finished in France, using local knowledge from the Cognac region, and using secret recipes from Maison Ferrand, producers of cognac and other fine spirits. Plantation XO 20th Anniversary Rum is made from extra-old rums from Barbados and was developed to honour Alexandre Gabriel’s 20 years as Master Blender. The rums are chosen for structure and aromatic characteristics that are well suited for intensive oak ageing. From its first release, this edition was very well received by rum enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike, and over a decade later this rum continues to receive positive reviews and top awards. This Signature Blend is made using rums from Barbados, which have first been aged in bourbon casks under the tropical sun for 8-15 years. When ready, the barrels set sail for France to be further aged on the continent for 2-10 years, using a mixture of new white oak, bourbon and Ferrand (cognac) casks, each with a different level of toasting. This centuries-old process of “double ageing“ adds smoothness and complexity to the finished rum. On the nose there are initial fruity and floral aromas which lead to notes of sweet vanilla, cocoa and milk. On the palate there are complex layers of chocolate, vanilla, ripe banana and roasted coconut. There is also a hint of fresh mango from the long maturation process in the French oak casks, a flavour that confirms the rums advanced age. With a delicious long finish, this rum is one to be savoured. More from Plantation Perfect Serve To enjoy Plantation XO 20th Anniversary Rum, add to a glass with a large ice cube, sip slowly and enjoy. If you don’t like your rum neat, add a drop of coconut water for a delicious drink with a tropical vibe.

Hennessy VS Cognac 35cl

Hennessy VS Cognac 35cl

Hennessy VS Cognac The history behind Hennessy goes back to 1765. It was an Irish Jacobite officer who had served in the army of Louis XV that started the Hennesy Cognac Distillery. He had retired in the cognac region where he setup the distillery and began exporting his products to the UK and Ireland. Now known as one of the 'big four' cognac producers in the world (who between then produce around 85% of the world's cognac). Hennessy is the largest of the four, and produce around 70 million bottles of cognac a year. In fact, it was in 1840 that Hennessy became the worlds leading exporter of Brandy, and to this day have not lost that title. Being a type of Brandy, Cognac falls under the French appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) which means there are strict requirements to be called Cognac. These include twice distilling specific grape varieties in copper pot stills and aging for a minimum of two years in Limousin or Tronçais oak casks. The VS (very special) designation denotes that the youngest brandy within the blend has had the minimum two years in casks (it is always the youngest brandy in the blend which gives the designation).  Hennessy VS Cognac is a blend masterfully created from over 40 different eaux-de-vie. It is the Master Blender who oversees this process to ensure the quality.  The result of this blending and knowledge is a full bodied cognac. With a renowned smoothness, and a touch of sweetness it has distinct spice notes. The aging in wood gives a light nuttiness to the cognac, which join with flavours of rich dried fruits and berries. These are all rounded out by warming vanilla. Interesting fact: In 1813 Jean Fillioux was appointed Master Blender. A member of the Fillious family has kept this role ever since - more than 250 years and a total of eight generations! More from Hennessy Perfect Serve If enjoying straight up on its own, ensure you enjoy this at room temperature from a tulip glass. However this also works exceptionally well in the mix. Try mixing with ginger ale for a longer refreshing drink, which brings out the natural spice found in Hennessy V.S. Take a tall glass filled with ice and add 40ml of the V.S. Gently pour over 100ml of ginger ale (we like this with Fentimans), and stir gently. Garnish with a slice of lime.
