Merlet VS Cognac The Merlet family have been producing wine since the 18th Century. But it was in 1850 that Firmin Merley began distilling just outside the village of Saint Sauvant in the region of Saintonge Using this, he began to distill his own harvest. It was his successor, Edouard, who began providing fine eaux-de-vie to the large cognac houses like Hennessy. Through generations, the Merlet family have refined their expetise in producing unique eaux-de-vie which is respectful of the Saintonge terroir. However, it is time in oak barrels which ensures their eaux-de-vie develops into harmonious cognacs. For their Merlet VS Cognac, the current family members (Gilles and his sons) select and blend eaux-de-vie from different regions of the cognac appellation. Along with aging for at least two years, this ensures a consistent quality to their Cognac. The selection used are those which are light are come mainly from Fins Bois ‘crus’. However the blend also includes some from Bons Bois and a little bit of Petite Champagne. The resulting Cognac has a slight woodiness, and a delicate fruitiness.  This straw coloured cognac has a nise which is dlicate, but full of subtle notes of vanilla and pear. Coquerel Calvados VS Het verhaal van Domaine du Coquerel begint in 1937, toen René Gilbert het bedrijf oprichtte. Gelegen in Manoir du Coquerel, gelegen in Normandië - en in het gebied waar AOC Calvados gemaakt kan worden. Interessant weetje: AOC staat voor 'appellation d'origine contrôlée' (Frans voor gecontroleerde oorsprongsbenaming). Hieruit blijkt dat een product wordt geproduceerd en verwerkt in een bepaald gebied en volgens erkende en traditionele productiemethoden. De boomgaarden waar de appels en peren vandaan komen, zijn van Coquerel zelf, maar ook van andere lokale fruitproducenten in hun directe omgeving - waarvan sommige al tientallen jaren hun fruit leveren. De natuurlijke methoden die worden gebruikt om het fruit te produceren, zorgen voor een wildgroei aan bijen voor de bestuiving van de bloemen, evenals koeien en schapen die grazen in de boomgaarden. Een mix van 40 verschillende appels en peren, uit 4 verschillende families, wordt gebruikt om de perfecte cider te creëren (de eerste fase in de productie van Calvados). Deze 4 verschillende families geven elk een andere kwaliteit - scherp, bitterzoet, zoet en bitterscherp. Het ene vruchtensap is op natuurlijke wijze gefermenteerd om cider te maken - destillatie vindt plaats om de heldere, frisse en fruitige eau-de-vie te creëren. Dit wordt vervolgens gerijpt in Franse eiken vaten - uiteindelijk ontstaan de Calvados. Om hun VS-aanduiding te bereiken, duurt het verouderingsproces minimaal 2 jaar. J&B Rare Whisky De geschiedenis achter J&B (Justerini & Brooks) gaat terug tot 1749, toen het werd opgericht als handelaar in Fine Wine & Spirits om de aristocratische huizen van Londen te bevoorraden. Het leverde zelfs elke Britse monarch sinds koning George III in 1761. Dit, hun J&B Rare Whisky, werd voor het eerst op de markt gebracht in 1933 na het einde van het verbod in de VS. De blend bevat in totaal 42 verschillende single malt- en graanwhisky's uit Schotland. Deze omvatten distilleerderijen als Knockando, Auchroisk en Glen Spey. Hoewel de whisky is gemaakt met het oog op mixen, is hij zeker veelzijdig genoeg om puur of met ijs van te genieten, met zijn zachte, fruitige smaak waar je van kunt genieten zoals je wilt. In de neus zitten tonen van sinaasappelschil en mout, met verwarmende karamel, appels en walnoten. De smaak is evenwichtig, soepel en vol rijp fruit - met mout en een delicate toffeezoetheid. Naarmate de drank afdronk, blijft hij uitzonderlijk evenwichtig: aanhoudend, maar niet overdreven, met een medium afdronk met houtachtig eikenhout en een vleugje kaneelkruiden. Penderyn Single Malt Welsh Whisky - Peated "Van Wales naar de wereld..." - Penderyn-distilleerderij De Penderyn-distilleerderij ligt aan de rand van de Brecon Beacons (een nationaal park in Wales, VK). Het werd gelanceerd op St David's Day in 2004 (de patroonheilige van Wales), in aanwezigheid van koning Charles III (toenmalig ZKH Prins Charles, die de Prins van Wales was). De locatie werd gekozen vanwege een frisse natuurlijke bron in het dorp. Ze gebruiken ook een unieke koperen ketel met één pot, ontworpen door Dr. David Faraday (een familielid van de beroemde 19e-eeuwse wetenschapper). Deze werd in 2000 geïnstalleerd en produceert een alcoholpercentage van 92%, wat een hoog niveau in de sector is. Volgens Penderyn is dit één van de redenen dat hun whisky’s licht, fruitig en vol van smaak zijn. Alsof dit nog niet genoeg was om een product van wereldklasse te garanderen, huurden ze Dr. Jum Swan, een Schotse whisky-expert, in als hun meesterdistilleerder. Sinds de lancering zijn de zaken alleen maar sterker geworden, ze hebben meer dan 100 Double Gold/Gold/Masters-prijzen gewonnen en zijn verkrijgbaar in meer dan 50 landen over de hele wereld, inclusief de belangrijkste markten voor whisky van Frankrijk, Duitsland, de VS en China. Voor hun Gold-assortiment, waarin hun Peated-editie zit, heeft Penderyn zich laten inspireren door Welsh Gold. Uiterst zeldzaam, puur en kostbaar. Het werd gedragen door de legendarische Welshe prinsen van weleer. Hun geturfde editie (zoals de naam doet vermoeden) heeft een medium turfachtig karakter. Interessant genoeg is dit ook gecertificeerd als Kosher. De neus heeft een zoete aromatische rokerigheid, met vanille, groene appel en verfrissende citrus. De smaken zijn complex, maar toch zacht met een lichte rook en citrusfruitigheid. Het eindigt met rook en vanille. Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin Californian Orange Citrus Deze gin is gemaakt aan de rand van een meer, in een klein Iers stadje genaamd Drumshanbo (waar de gin ook zijn naam aan ontleent). Hier vind je The Shed Distillery. Ze produceren gins die verre van gewoon zijn, en distilleren hun gin langzaam met behulp van enkele van de beste oosterse plantaardige ingrediënten van de natuur, samen met buskruitthee. Deze zijn allemaal geïnspireerd op de reizen die PJ Rigney rond het werk heeft gemaakt. Elk van de Drumshanbo-gins haalt specifieke inspiratie uit een bepaald gebied. Tijdens een van zijn vele avonturen bezocht PJ Rigney de zonovergoten westkust van de VS. Hij bezocht de San Francisco Bay Area, waar hij kennis maakte met de heerlijke Californische sinaasappelcitrusvruchten die daar te vinden zijn. Hij realiseerde zich meteen dat deze perfect zouden passen bij de bestaande exotische citrusvruchten in de klassieke Drumshanbo-gin - wat een heldere en kleurrijke uitbarsting van verse Californische citrusvruchten zou geven en een geheel nieuwe gin zou creëren. Hoewel dit de originele Drumshanbo als basis gebruikt, heeft het een onderscheidende en heerlijke kwaliteit die uniek is voor zichzelf. Het is niet verwonderlijk dat de rijke smaken van rijpe sinaasappel samengaan met de gepeperde jeneverbes in de kern. Deze worden echter samengevoegd en in balans gebracht met warme vanille en koriander. We vonden dit een heerlijke citrusrijke toevoeging aan het Drumshanbo-assortiment. Meer van The Shed Distillery Perfect Serve Dit wordt, net als het origineel, het beste geserveerd om ervoor te zorgen dat de gin zelf volledig wordt gewaardeerd. Neem een groot glas en vul met ijs. Voeg 50 ml van de gin toe en voeg 150 - 200 ml van een premium neutrale tonic toe (wij houden van Fentimans Connoisseurs Tonic). Roer voorzichtig en garneer met een schijfje of twee sinaasappel. Als je de citrus echt wilt versterken, probeer dan Fentimans Valencian Orange Tonic.

Cubical Kiss Gin The Cubical range of Gin's are produced for Bodegas Williams & Humbert at the Langley distillery in Birmingham. This distillery has been making quality gins since 1920.  For the base of this gin, high quality english grain is distilled using three seperate distillation processes. This ensures a smooth base from which to build the flavours profiles. A careful selection of botanicals has been chosen which blends perfectly with the berries found in this gin. Juniper, bergamot and sweet orange all ensure a deliciously well balanced gin. For their Kiss edition, Cubical use their classic base and add red fruits, which give it both its flavour and delightful pink hue. The fruits used for this are strawberries, raspberries and blueberries - which blend perfectly with the citrus notes from the classic gin - ensuring this isnt too sweet a gin. It has a light and distinctly aromatic scent which is clearly filled with notes from the red fruits. On the palate nothing overwhelms, with the whole coming together perfectly. It's soft and vibrant, and the fruits bring their distinctive flavours. Cardhu Gold Reserve Single Malt Whisky The Cardhu distillery was founded in 1824 by an ex-whisky smuggler John Cumming and his wife Helen. The original distillery was located high on Mannoch hill above the river spey due to the peat softening the water. In 1885 a new distillery was built, which allowed for an increase in production. (Interestingly, the old stills were sold to William Grant, who setup the Glenfiddich distillery). This increase tripled the output of the distillery, and Johnnie Walker & Sons bought much of it to use in their increasingly popular blend. In 1893 the Cummings family sold the distillery to Johnnie Walker & Sons. Whilst their Gold Reserve keeps its smooth and sweet nature (which it's Classic 12 year old is renowned for), their Gold Reserve is fruitier and warmer on the palate. An initial sweetness is cut through with fruity, crisp orange zest, followed by a subtle dryness. It's smooth taste brings forth a delicios mix of further sweet fruits, dark chocolate, toffee and a touch of spice. (The water helps the whisky offer up some new, fruity flavours when served with ice). It's sweetness also makes this a perfect aperitif.

Penderyn Single Malt Welsh Whisky - Madeira Finish "From Wales to the world..." - Penderyn Distillery De Penderyn-distilleerderij bevindt zich aan de rand van de Brecon Beacons (een nationaal park in Wales, VK). Het werd gelanceerd op St David's Day in 2004 (de patroonheilige van Wales), in aanwezigheid van koning Charles III (toen ZKH Prins Charles, die de Prins van Wales was). De locatie is gekozen vanwege een frisse natuurlijke bron in het dorp. Ze gebruiken ook een unieke koperen single-pot still, die is ontworpen door Dr. David Faraday (een familielid van de beroemde 19e-eeuwse wetenschapper). Dit werd geïnstalleerd in 2000 en produceert een spirit van 92%, wat een industriehoog niveau is. Volgens Penderyn is dit een van de redenen dat hun whisky's licht, fruitig en vol van smaak zijn. Alsof dit nog niet genoeg was om een product van wereldklasse te garanderen, huurden ze Dr. Jum Swan, een Schotse whisky-expert, in als hun Master Distiller. Sinds hun lancering zijn de zaken alleen maar sterker geworden en ze hebben meer dan 100 Double Gold / Gold / Masters-prijzen gewonnen en zijn verkrijgbaar in meer dan 50 landen over de hele wereld, waaronder de belangrijkste markten voor whisky van Frankrijk, Duitsland, de VS en China. Voor hun Gold-assortiment, waarin hun Madeira Finish zit, heeft Penderyn zich laten inspireren door Welsh Gold. Uiterst zeldzaam, puur en kostbaar, het werd gedragen door de legendarische Welshe prinsen van weleer. De Madeira-finish is de originele Penderyn 'huisstijl' en wordt gerijpt in ex-bourbonvaten voordat hij wordt gefinisht in ex-Madeira-wijnvaten. Dit zorgt voor een vol goud karakter. In de neus is er een klassieke frisheid die wordt versterkt met aroma's van romige toffee en rijk fruit en rozijnen. In de mond is het knapperig en goed afgerond, met een eiken banille en heeft een zoetheid die een verfijnde droogheid in evenwicht houdt. De afdronk brengt tonen van tropisch fruit, meer rozijnen en vanille. Generous Gin Organic Sometimes simplicity can deliver the best, or most flavourful experiences. It was this ethos that the creators of Generous followed when creating their gin.  They wanted an original, easy to drink and appreciate gin, one which was simple but would deliver the best Gin & Tonic. They used great natural ingredients (and in this edition, 100% organic), and produced in high precision small pot-stills. The botanicals they chose for their organic edition were Juniper, Citrus, Mandarin, Red Pepper, Combava & Coriander. Depending on the botanical, they either macerate the botanical, or distill, to ensure the flavours are captured and not destroyed. On the nose, this is a really fresh smelling gin, with a touch of sweetness. There is a hint of juniper which is balanced perfectly by lemony notes. The flavours are fresh and fruity, thanks to the combination of coriander and combava. Juniper remains and again, like with the aroma, is balanced and freshened by the citrus.  Read more about Generous Perfect Serve As this was made to be enjoyed as a classic, elegant gin & tonic, we suggest something simple. Take a large copa glass and fill with ice. Add 40ml of the gin, and gently pour over 100ml of your chosen tonic (we like Fentimans Connoiseurs Tonic). Stir gently, and garnish with a fslice of lemon.
