Hayman's Royal Dock Gin In 1863 opende James Burrough een kleine distilleerderij in Chelsea, Londen. Hij experimenteerde met een aantal ginrecepten en gaf ze namen als Burrough's, Olde Chelsey, Beefeater en Black Cat. Het was James die de London Dry gin bedacht, die tegenwoordig bekend en geliefd is (in die tijd was Old Tom de favoriete gin van Londen). Het was dit wat leidde tot de ontwikkeling van het merk Beefeater Gin... maar het gaf ook de aanzet tot het merk Hayman's gin. De huidige Master Distiller van Hayman's (Christopher Hayman) is de achterkleinzoon van James Burrough. MOM God Save the Gin Royal Smoothness "Always wear your invisible crown with MOM, the Queen of the Gins" With the aim of breaking stereotypes, the producers of MOM Gin (González Byass) created their Royal Smoothness edition. Even the design of the bottle is intended to represent the two sides of the British character; Tradition, and modernity. The gin itself is smooth (as you would suggest from the name) and distinctive. It's made with a total of four distillations which use exoic botanicals. The succesive distillations help ensure the smooth qualities of the gin. After this process the gin is infused with red berries (sweet raspberries, and tart, ripe redcurrants) which imbue their sweet fruity flavours.  Whilst MOM definitely exudes a feminine, fashionable and sophisticated feel, this is easily enjoyed by any who like their gins sweet and fruity. This is great for those who like their gin with a quieter note of juniper. The flavour of this gin is sweet and is full of the berry flavours and aromas, with the juniper being far more delicate (although it's still present). Edinburgh Gin 1670 With the natural connection between botany and distilling, this gin is a limited edition collaboration between Edinburgh Gin, and the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh. Inspiration for this gin was taken after the discovery of the "1670 Physic Garden". This was used as a source of botanical inspired medicinal remedies by two Edinburgh doctors, Robert Sibbald and Andrew Balfour. Over a 12 month period, David Wilkinson (Edinburgh Gin's Head distiller) worked with the Royal Botanic Garden's head botanist. The recipe was experimented with, and refined until both were happy.  Many of the botanicals which were finally decided upon would also have been found in the original garden, such as fennel (seeds and leaves) and sweet cicely both quite common, alongside exotic plants such as Piper Leaf, Tasmannia Lanceolata leaf and Tasmanian Mountain Pepper. The result? A contemporary gin which keeps its roots firmly in a fascinating chapter of Edinburgh’s history. Through painstaking research in the Royal British Library's rare book section, this recipe came to light after being found in the rare books archive. The recipe detailed the original ingredients, but unfortunately the quantities were concealed by code, which to date has not been broken! Not to be deterred, the rights of the recipe were acquired, and a perfect partner found to recreate the delicate flavours of the original gin: Herman Jansen. One of the Netherlands finest distillers, the distillery was founded in 1777 and based in the Dutch Gin & Genever capital Schiedam. Through trial and error, today's recipe was perfected and finalised. The original ingredients from 350 years ago are used, with Gin 1689 beautifully combining juniper with dried quince and pippin (an ancient apple variety), lemon and orange peel, nutmeg, aniseed and clove. It's quite fruity on the nose, but not surprising when you see the recipe. Juniper is present, but takes more of a background role, with a sweet spiciness, and a touch of citrus being much more pronounced. As with all gins, the taste differs when drinking straight (neat, over ice), or with a tonic. When tried neat, the juniper comes forward in the taste with a pleasant tanginess (coming from the quince and apple). Citrus notes are present, but more round the gin off than being too prevalent. When tried with tonic, this really comes alive as the carbonation (bubbles), lift the botanicals allowing more to shine. The citrus is more noticeable when drunk this way. Coming in a brilliant blue bottle, with regal gold lettering befitting its Royal background, the overall result is definitely fit for a King! Dubonnet Rouge In 1846, Dubonnet Rouge was the created by Sir Joseph Dubonnet (a Parisian wine merchant and chemist). At the time it quickly became a popular medicinal aperitif across the world. The brand name Dubonnet originates from the French word for dark brown - a reference to the original colour of the drink. It is made with a blend of fotified wine (using a distinct blend of grapes, Ruby Red, Ruby Cabernet and Muscat of Alexandria), herbs and spices (including blackcurrant and essence of teas), Chinchona bark (which was the original medicinal ingredient, and is perhaps better known as quinine - and gives a dry tannin note), and finally 100% cane sugar adding a degree of sweetness. Fun Fact: Dubonnet Rouge is famous in the UK as it was a favourite drink of Queen Elizabeth II and her mother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Both enjoyed a cocktail of Dubonnet Rouge (2/3) and Gin (1/3), served over ice with a slice of lemon. In fact, in November 2021, Dubonnet was even awarded a Royal Warrant by Queen Elizabeth II This has a perfect balance of berry fruit sweetness which is followed by the tannin flavour of the quinine as well as its bitter aftertaste.
