The Town of Light is a psychological thriller for PC, PS4 etc. realized in the form of a first-person exploration game, the creators of which set themselves the goal of telling the dark story of a real place. The game is the debut work of a dozen or so independent studio Lka.it from Italy.
The game begins in modern times, and the setting is an abandoned asylum for the insane in the Italian town of Volterra. This institution existed from the 19th century and was one of the most famous places of this type on the Apennine Peninsula (the number of patients confined there was several thousand), but it was closed in 1978 along with other shelters in Italy when the law of this country changed.
The creators of The Town of Light decided to present the history of this place, with particular emphasis on the dramas of its inhabitants, treated for years by the staff of the facility as animals. To this end, the developer recreated the asylum in Volterra (both inside and outside the building) with great care, and collected a wealth of research material on it, including accounts of people related to the history of the plant.
The player learns about the abandoned resort and its past, guided by the steps of 16-year-old Renee - a fictional character who comes to Volterra in search of lost memories. The girl suffers from schizophrenia, so the adventure is disturbed by symptoms resulting from this ailment, as well as the protagonist's fears and other emotions. While wandering around the shelter, we are guided by the heroine's voice, but this does not mean that the gameplay is linear - the plot has an open structure and can develop in various ways.
The Town of Light version for PC, PS4, etc. was created on the Unity engine and has a very nice graphic design, in which the detailed, meticulously reproduced area of activity stands out. It is also worth mentioning that the game has been adapted to play with virtual reality goggles.
