Fingerponds: Seasonal Integrated Aquaculture in East African Freshwater Wetlands: Exploring their potential for wise use strategies PhD: UNE

Fingerponds: Seasonal Integrated Aquaculture in East African Freshwater Wetlands: Exploring their potential for wise use strategies PhD: UNE

Wetlands play an important role in the livelihoods of many rural households particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. However due to decline in rainfed terrestrial agriculture many wetlands are being encroached upon to grow crops. The question to any wetland scientist/policy maker in the region is: what efforts can be made to achieve a balance between human needs for food and income and maintenance of ecosystem integrity?. This study analyses the potential of smallholder integrated aquaculture farming systems (calledFingerponds ) around the Lake Victoria wetlands in Kenya. Various analytical tools were used to evaluate the biophysical suitability nutrient flows benefits and environmental implications of this innovative technology. The critical biophysical factors determining Fingerponds productivity are site selection and water supply. The analysis of nutrient flows in the entire agroecosystem using nitrogen as the currency indicated that the total system throughput and hence the overall productivity of the system were low. Fingerponds contributed to household livelihoods by providing protein and income and added diversity to the household activities with minimal impacts on the natural environment. With careful implementation and adaptive management Fingerponds can be incorporated into national wetland policies and enhance the balance between economic development and environmental conservation. | Fingerponds: Seasonal Integrated Aquaculture in East African Freshwater Wetlands: Exploring their potential for wise use strategies PhD: UNE

Handbook of Measurements Benchmarks for Systems Accuracy and Precision

Handbook of Measurements Benchmarks for Systems Accuracy and Precision

Planning measuring and paying attention to details form the basis for all successful engineering operations. Measurements pervade everything we do and must be viewed from a systems perspective. A comprehensive all-encompassing guide to measurements Handbook of Measurements: Benchmarks for Systems Accuracy and Precision focuses on high-level engineering computations essential for benchmarks and technical innovation. The book uses a systems framework and a technically rigorous approach to systems linking of measurements—an approach that sets it apart from other handbooks. The popular saying measure twice and cut once bears out the importance of measurements in human endeavors. This handbook covers both qualitative and quantitative topics of measurement. It opens with a chapter on the fundamentals of measurement and includes coverage of human-centric measurements such as measurement of personnel productivity and contractor performance. It concludes with three appendices on measurement references conversion factors equations formulas and statistics for measurement. It is well understood that humans cannot manage anything that cannot be measured. All elements involved in our day-to-day decision making involve some form of measurement whether in the kitchen retail sports service operations geographical exploration health care delivery worker productivity clothing design engineering product design or space craft launching. Measuring an attribute of a system and then analyzing it against some standard some specification some best practice or some benchmark empower a decision maker to take appropriate and timely actions. This book gives you a guide for sustainable practices to ensure accurate measurements helping you make decisions backed by metrics. | Handbook of Measurements Benchmarks for Systems Accuracy and Precision

Water-Related Death Investigation Practical Methods and Forensic Applications

Water-Related Death Investigation Practical Methods and Forensic Applications

Nearly ten years after the first edition of Water-Related Death Investigation: Practical Methods and Forensic Applications water death cases continue to be improperly investigated. The pathologist’s report can determine the cause of death as a drowning but the manner of death is the most challenging to prove. The report will not determine if a victim jumped into the water to commit suicide fell into the water accidentally or was pushed in as a homicidal act. Many drowning cases do not reflect injury to the body so evidence collected at the scene plays a vital role. The importance of an on-scene body assessment cannot be overemphasized. Often the body evidence begins to change rapidly upon recovery and may not be present during an autopsy. Written statements on the scene are an effective tool to use to determine the accuracy of information given to arriving officers. These statements need to be written by the witnesses themselves as well as the reporting person. The Show Me technique can also help reveal discrepancies in a person’s version of what occurred as well as aid in providing the most details to an incident as is humanly possible. This second edition includes updated information on the latest technology to assist water death investigators. Parabon Snapshot can help determine the faceless identity of skeletal remains and help locate potential suspects using the science of DNA. Drones can aid in locating missing persons as well as human remains even months after death. Updated information is provided regarding fingerprints from submerged objects and Carbon-14 can help determine the origin of a found corpse. Key Features: Thoroughly reviews the physiological aspects of drowning Reveals the investigative characteristics inherent to various scenes of water-related deaths Highlights certain red flag indicators that may point to foul play or scene staging Outlines autopsy protocols trial preparation and expert witness testimony Provides numerous case studies and numerous illustrations to further clarify key points presented in the text Coauthored by a Master Water Death Investigator and an experienced forensic pathologist Water-Related Death Investigation: Practical Methods and Forensic Applications Second Edition merges the essentials of evidence collection and field investigation with autopsy best practices and laboratory testing. It will continue to serve as a valuable resource for the various professionals involved in these cases. | Water-Related Death Investigation Practical Methods and Forensic Applications

Preventing and Managing Violence in Organizations Workplace Violence Targeted Violence and Active Shooters

Preventing and Managing Violence in Organizations Workplace Violence Targeted Violence and Active Shooters

Organizations of all types and sizes whether they are a business educational institution healthcare provider or house-of-worship need to plan for the possibility of violent acts that may impact its people assets and activities. Preventing and Managing Violence in Organizations: Workplace Violence Targeted Violence and Active Shooters provides a comprehensive approach to addressing workplace violence active shooter and assailant events and other forms of targeted violence. The book takes a unique perspective that the prevention and management of violence in an organization is a risk and business management issue rather than a siloed security issue. As such the book’s objective is to help organizations develop a program for preventing and managing violence that can be integrated into their day-to-day overall business management approach. The main theme of the book is that any program to prevent and manage violence in an organization needs to be an inclusive process: where everyone in the organization is viewed as a risk maker and risk taker and therefore a risk manager. The emphasis is on building a risk and security awareness culture in the organization so that everyone throughout the organization is aware and part of the solution. The book recognizes that many if not most organizations do not have a dedicated chief security officer to oversee the prevention and management of violence. It also recognizes that many resource allocation decisions are made by business managers not the security manager. While other books approach this issue from a security perspective this book takes the perspective that providing a safe and secure environment within the organization and protecting its people assets and activities is a business management imperative. Therefore the book emphasizes the need to promote a risk and security awareness culture that is integrated into the organization's system of management and all its activities and functions. The Introduction section of the book includes a brief description of violence in organizations and the imperative for integrating the prevention and management of violence into the organization’s overall business management strategy. The Framework section helps business human resource risk security and safety managers build a programmatic framework to support prevention and management of violence in all the organizations activities. The Tactics and Control Measures section provides tactical and operational advice and tools on methods to prevent respond to and recover from potentially violent events. For organizations that have adopted an ISO Robust Process Improvement or Six-Sigma management systems approach they will immediately recognize that the elements described in the framework can be integrated seamlessly into their overall management system approach. Preventing and Managing Violence in Organizations illustrates a systems approach for preventing and managing violence in organizations that can also be used for managing other types of operational risks. Security managers will find the book useful for integrating security in the organization’s day-to-day activities—as an integral part of these activities—rather than an add-on activity. Security professionals will be able to present their program from a business and risk management perspective. | Preventing and Managing Violence in Organizations Workplace Violence Targeted Violence and Active Shooters
