Renewable Energy Integration with Building Energy Systems A Modelling Approach

Renewable Energy Integration with Building Energy Systems A Modelling Approach

Construction as an industry sector is responsible for around one-third of the total worldwide energy usage and about 20% of greenhouse gas emissions. The rise in the number of buildings and floor space area for residential and commercial purposes has imposed enormous pressure on existing energy sources. Implementations such as efficient usage of building energy systems design measures utilization of local energy resources energy storage and the use of renewable energy sources to meet electricity demands are currently under development and deployment for improving the energy performance index. However integrating all such measures and the development of nearly zero-energy and zero-emission buildings is yet to be explored. In this book the different control techniques and intelligent technologies used to improve the energy performance of buildings are illustrated. Every building energy control system has a two-fold objective for energy and comfort requirements to achieve a high comfort index (for thermal visual air quality humidity and various plug loads) and increase the energy performance index. The most significant aspect in the design of a building’s energy control system is modelling. All the components methodologies and processes involved in developing a renewable energy-driven building are covered in detail. This book is intended for graduates and professionals working towards the development of a sustainable built environment using renewable energy sources. | Renewable Energy Integration with Building Energy Systems A Modelling Approach

Security Patch Management

Security Patch Management

Although the patch management process is neither exceedingly technical nor extremely complicated it is still perceived as a complex issue that’s often left to the last minute or resolved with products that automate the task. Effective patch management is not about technology; it’s about having a formal process in place that can deploy patches to vulnerable systems quickly. Helping you figure out exactly what to patch and which patches to use Security Patch Management provides detailed guidance through the process of creating and implementing an effective and efficient patch management process. It uses a format that is easy-to-understand and applicable regardless of the operating system network device or patch deployment tool. The author illustrates the proper implementation of patches on devices and systems within various infrastructures to provide the insight required to:Design your own patch release process and keep it action ready Test the effectiveness of your patches Keep up with the latest patch releases Prioritize the vulnerabilities that need to be addressed Apply patches quickly and without draining essential network resources This book supplies the tools and guidelines you need to stay one step ahead of the exploits on the horizon. It will help you establish a patch management process that not only protects your organization against zero-day attacks but also helps you become more proactive when it comes to this critical facet of information security.

Security-First Compliance for Small Businesses

Security-First Compliance for Small Businesses

Organizations of all sizes struggle to secure their data in a constantly evolving digital landscape. Expanding digital footprints and the rapid expansion of cloud strategies arising from the COVID-19 pandemic increase an organization’s attack surface. When combined with limited resources caused by the cybersecurity skills gap securing small and mid-sized business IT infrastructures becomes more complicated. With limited staffing and budgetary restrictions small businesses need to create cost-effective security-driven programs that protect data while also meeting increasingly stringent compliance requirements. This book bridges the gap between complex technical language and business objectives to create a security-first review of the security and compliance landscapes. Starting from the premise that “with security comes compliance ” this book starts by defining “security-first” and then walking readers through the process of creating a holistic security and compliance program. Looking at security and privacy through the lens of zero trust this overview of regulations and industry standards provides both background about and implications drawn from modern security practices. Rather than focusing solely on individual cybersecurity frameworks this book offers insights into best practices based on the commonalities between regulations and industry standards highlighting some of the primary differences to show the nuances. Woven throughout are practical examples of solutions that enable small and mid-sized businesses to create “cybersustainable” security-focused policies processes and controls that protect today’s future for tomorrow’s digital ecosystem. | Security-First Compliance for Small Businesses

Introduction to Topological Quantum Matter & Quantum Computation

Introduction to Topological Quantum Matter & Quantum Computation

What is topological about topological quantum states? How many types of topological quantum phases are there? What is a zero-energy Majorana mode how can it be realized in a solid state system and how can it be used as a platform for topological quantum computation? What is quantum computation and what makes it different from classical computation?Addressing these and other related questions Introduction to Topological Quantum Matter & Quantum Computation provides an introduction to and a synthesis of a fascinating and rapidly expanding research field emerging at the crossroads of condensed matter physics mathematics and computer science. Providing the big picture this book is ideal for graduate students and researchers entering this field as it allows for the fruitful transfer of paradigms and ideas amongst different areas and includes many specific examples to help the reader understand abstract and sometimes challenging concepts. It explores the topological quantum world beyond the well-known topological insulators and superconductors and emphasizes the deep connections with quantum computation. It addresses key principles behind the classification of topological quantum phases and relevant mathematical concepts and discusses models of interacting and noninteracting topological systems such as the torric code and the p-wave superconductor. The book also covers the basic properties of anyons and aspects concerning the realization of topological states in solid state structures and cold atom systems. Quantum computation is also presented using a broad perspective which includes fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics such as Bell's theorem basic concepts in the theory of computation such as computational models and computational complexity examples of quantum algorithms and elements of classical and quantum information theory.

Alcohol Drugs and Impaired Driving Forensic Science and Law Enforcement Issues

Alcohol Drugs and Impaired Driving Forensic Science and Law Enforcement Issues

Alcohol Drugs and Impaired Driving addresses many theoretical and practical issues related to the role played by alcohol and other psychoactive drugs on driving performance road-traffic safety and public health. Several key forensic issues are involved in the enforcement of laws regulating driving under the influence of alcohol and/or other drugs including analytical toxicology pharmacology of drug action as well as the relationships between dose taken concentration levels in the body and impairment of performance and behavior. Our knowledge of drunken driving is much more comprehensive than drugged driving so a large part of this book is devoted to alcohol impairment as well as impairment caused by use of drugs other than alcohol. For convenience the book is divided into four main sections. The first section gives some historical background about measuring alcohol in blood and breath as evidence for the prosecution of traffic offenders. The important role of the Breathalyzer instrument in traffic-law enforcement especially in Australia Canada and the USA is presented along with a biographical sketch of its inventor (Professor Robert F. Borkenstein of Indiana University) with focus on the man his work and his impact. The second section discusses several issues related to forensic blood and breath-alcohol alcohol analysis as evidence for prosecution of traffic offenders. This includes how the results should be interpreted in relation to impairment and an evaluation of common defense challenges. Because most countries have adopted concentration per se laws the main thrust of the prosecution case is the suspect’s measured blood- or breath-alcohol concentration. This legal framework necessitates that the analytical methods used are fit for purpose and are subjected to rigorous quality assurance procedures. The third section gives a broad overview of the current state of knowledge about driving under the influence of non-alcohol drugs in various countries. This includes adoption of zero-tolerance laws concentration per se statutes and clinical evidence of driver impairment based on field sobriety tests and drug recognition expert evidence. The fourth section deals with epidemiology enforcement and countermeasures aimed at reducing the threat of drunken and drugged driving. All articles have appeared previously in the international journal Forensic Science Review but all are completely updated with current data references and the latest research on developments since the articles were published. This book contains a convenient collection of the best articles covering recommendations for blood and breath testing methods public policy relating to such methods and forensic and legal implications of the enforcement of measures to counter driving under the influence. | Alcohol Drugs and Impaired Driving Forensic Science and Law Enforcement Issues
