Analytical Measurements in Aquatic Environments

Analytical Measurements in Aquatic Environments

Even a cursory perusal of any analytical journal will demonstrate the increasing important of trace and ultra-trace analysis. And as instrumentation continues to develop the definition of the term trace element will undoubtedly continue to change. Covering the composition and underlying properties of freshwater and marine systems Analytical Measurements in Aquatic Environments provides the basis for understanding both. It discusses all aspects of analytical protocols from the handling of representative samples to the metrological evaluation of specific steps and whole procedures. The book covers: handling of representative samples sample preservation techniques extraction techniques speciation analytics solvent-free sample preparation for analysis application of biotests bioanalytical methods for monitoring green analytical chemistry-application of the concept of sustainability in analytical laboratories application of the Life Cycle Assessment approach quality control and quality assurance of analytical results enhanced techniques of sample preparation hyphenated analytical techniques Ecotoxicological considerations and the effort to achieve an increasingly accurate description of the state of the environment challenge analytical chemists who need to determine increasingly lower concentrations of various analytes in samples that have complex and even non-homogenous matrices. The newly coined expression analytics emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of available methods for obtaining information about material systems with many methods that exceed the strict definition of analytical chemistry. Drawing on the disciplines of chemistry physics computer science electronics material science and chemometrics this book provides in depth information on the most important problems in analytics of samples from aquatic ecosystems.

Geocryology Characteristics and Use of Frozen Ground and Permafrost Landforms

Geocryology Characteristics and Use of Frozen Ground and Permafrost Landforms

This book provides a general survey of Geocryology which is the study of frozen ground called permafrost. Frozen ground is the product of cold climates as well as a variety of environmental factors. Its major characteristic is the accumulation of large quantities of ice which may exceed 90% by volume. Soil water changing to ice results in ground heaving while thawing of this ice produces ground subsidence often accompanied by soil flowage. Permafrost is very susceptible to changes in weather and climate as well as to changes in the microenvironment. Cold weather produces contraction of the ground resulting in cracking of the soil as well as breakup of concrete rock etc. Thus permafrost regions have unique landforms and processes not found in warmer lands. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1 provides an introduction to the characteristics of permafrost. Four chapters deal with its definition and characteristics the unique processes operating there the factors affecting it and its general distribution. Part 2 consists of seven chapters describing the characteristic landforms unique to these areas and the processes involved in their formation. Part 3 discusses the special problems encountered by engineers in construction projects including settlements roads and railways the oil and gas industry mining and the agricultural and forest industries. The three authors represent three countries and three language groups and together have over 120 years of experience of working in permafrost areas throughout the world. The book contains over 300 illustrations and photographs and includes an extensive bibliography in order to introduce the interested reader to the large current literature. Finalist of the 2019 PROSE Awards. | Geocryology Characteristics and Use of Frozen Ground and Permafrost Landforms

Project Management for Healthcare

Project Management for Healthcare

Project Management for Healthcare Second Edition covers the significant changes in both the direction of healthcare and the direction of project management. The most significant change in healthcare is the prevalence of online data and the need for its protection. The book explains how data can be protected during a project’s lifecycle. The most significant change in project management is Agile and a new chapter covers how Agile can be applied to projects in healthcare. This new edition also covers green technology and sustainability. Exploring the discipline of project management from the perspective of the healthcare the book dissects the project process and covers the management skills required to successfully manage a project. By defining a project to include the tools and techniques required the book shows how to successfully deliver a project from identifying stakeholders and developing and gaining consensus on requirements to constructing a project plan. It also covers in detail the skills required to successfully manage project stakeholders and team members. At times healthcare personnel may have to work with program management or may even be part of program management and must interact with pharmaceutical companies and medical device manufacturers. This book covers program management and how it relates to the healthcare industry and some of the project processes used by those companies involved in pharmaceuticals and manufacturers of medical devices. By giving an inside look at the processes used the book gives an understanding of how those companies bring their products to market and how to adapt those processes for their own benefit. Managing healthcare projects using the discipline of project management is a skill that can help healthcare professionals better utilize limited resources both human and monetary and ensure the highest possible quality of care to meet or exceed their stakeholders’ expectations. Project Management for Healthcare Second Edition shows how to use the discipline of project management to achieve those goals successfully.

Wrongful Convictions and Forensic Science Errors Case Studies and Root Causes

Wrongful Convictions and Forensic Science Errors Case Studies and Root Causes

Forensic Science Errors and Wrongful Convictions: Case Studies and Root Causes provides a rigorous and detailed examination of two key issues: the continuing problem of wrongful convictions and the role of forensic science in these miscarriages of justice. This comprehensive textbook covers the full breadth of the topic. It looks at each type of evidence historical factors system issues organizational factors and individual examiners. Forensic science errors may arise at any time from crime scene to courtroom. Probative evidence may be overlooked at the scene of a crime or the chain of custody may be compromised. Police investigators may misuse or ignore forensic evidence. A poorly-trained examiner may not apply the accepted standards of the discipline or may make unsound interpretations that exceed the limits of generally accepted scientific knowledge. In the courtroom the forensic scientist may testify outside the standards of the discipline or fail to present exculpatory results. Prosecutors may suppress or mischaracterize evidence and judges may admit testimony that does not conform to rules of evidence. All too often the accused will not be afforded an adequate defense—especially given the technical complexities of forensic evidence. These issues do not arise in a vacuum; they result from system issues that are discernable and can be ameliorated. Author John Morgan provides a thorough discussion of the policy practice and technical aspects of forensic science errors from a root-cause scientific analysis perspective. Readers will learn to analyze common issues across cases and jurisdictions perform basic root cause analysis and develop systemic reforms. The reader is encouraged to assess cases and issues without regard to preconceived views or prejudicial language. As such the book reinforces the need to obtain a clear understanding of errors to properly develop a set of effective scientific procedural and policy reforms to reduce wrongful convictions and improve forensic integrity and reliability. Written in a format and style accessible to a broad audience Forensic Science Errors and Wrongful Convictions presents a thorough analysis across all of these issues supported by detailed case studies and a clear understanding of the scientific basis of the forensic disciplines. | Wrongful Convictions and Forensic Science Errors Case Studies and Root Causes
