Delphiniums need to be in the sun for at least half of the day, so choose a spot in the garden accordingly. Soil must be fertile and free draining; If your soil is poor then dig in plenty of new compost or organic matter to enrich it. Water plants well to establish and maintain a regular watering and feeding schedule throughout the months that the plant is growing. Flower spikes may need to be tied to a stake to stop them from blowing over and getting damaged. Remove dead flowers and once the plant has finished its 1st flush of flowering in Late May / Early June, chop the plant back by half to encourage a second flush later in the summer. This is often called the ‘Chelsea Chop’, as plants tend to be nearing the end of their 1st flush around the time of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Lychnis grow best in moderately fertile, well-drained soils in full sun or partial shade. They will not tolerate particularly wet soils and produce the best leaf colour in dry soils. To improve your soil you can add grit and extra organic matter to help with drainage. Water at least once a week during summer months, but much less during cooler periods. Once established they are drought tolerant. A balanced liquid fertiliser can be applied during spring and early summer to improve performance. Although Lychnis are short-lived perennials they will self-seed giving you new plants every year. If you would like to prevent this remove faded flowers before they set-seed. Cut back the faded flower stems after flowering to admire the attractive foliage.

If you are looking for showy Salvia that will stand out in the crowd then our Salvia Bordeaux Rose is an absolute delight! Our lovely Bordeaux Rose has a strongly aromatic yet compact foliage with an intensely rich elegant rose’ colour flower. Salvia Bordeaux Rose will set off your borders even better as its height allows it to sit beautifully between your established shrubs and trees and your smaller Geraniums.
