Moving Boxes by Air The Economics of International Air Cargo

Moving Boxes by Air The Economics of International Air Cargo

Air cargo is a key element of the global supply chain. It allows outsourcing of manufacturing to other countries and links production in both multinational and smaller enterprises. It has also been the most important driver of certain export industries in countries such as South Africa Kenya and Chile. As a component of the air transport industry air cargo makes the crucial difference between profit and loss on many long-haul routes. This second edition of Moving Boxes by Air offers a comprehensive and up-to-date guide to the business and practices of air cargo with chapters dedicated to key issues such as current trends market characteristics regulation airport terminal operations pricing and revenues and environmental impacts. The book illustrates the recent emphasis on mergers at the expense of alliances which have not had the impact that they had on passenger operations. The section on security has been expanded to assess in more depth the threats to aircraft from terrorists particularly in the lower cargo and passenger baggage compartments. Surcharges are examined and the book considers whether all airlines will follow the lead of some to do away with both fuel and security surcharges. The book concludes with a summary of the latest industry forecasts. Fully updated throughout this edition is the definitive guide to air cargo for professionals within both the aviation and freight industries. | Moving Boxes by Air The Economics of International Air Cargo

The Birth of Independent Air Power British Air Policy in the First World War

The Birth of Independent Air Power British Air Policy in the First World War

In forming the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918 Britain created the world’s first independent air service. Britain entered the First World War with less than 200 ill-assorted flying machines divided between the army and the navy but by the end of the war the RAF mustered almost 300 000 personnel and 22 000 aircraft. Originally published in 1986 more than 65 years after the event the decision to form the RAF remained poorly understood and Malcolm Cooper presented the first detailed modern analysis of its creation shedding new light on the process by which Britain entered the air age. Set against the background of the build-up of air power during the First World War the book explains how deepening political concern at failures in home air defence public demands for retaliatory air action against Germany problems of mobilization and expansion in the aircraft industry and disagreements between the existing army and navy air services combined to create the conditions for an independent air force. The author argues that the pressures of war were insufficient to give real substance to the RAF’s independence and that its failure to escape from its wartime role as an ancillary service was also of crucial significance in the evolution of British air strategy in later years. Based on an extensive study of official documents and private papers and amply illustrated with contemporary photographs this title will prove invaluable in understanding both strategic thinking in the Great War and the early development of a form of warfare which dominated military and naval operations in the twentieth century. | The Birth of Independent Air Power British Air Policy in the First World War

Max Weber and Islam

Max Weber and Islam

Max Weber and Islam is a major effort by Islamic-studies specialists to reexamine and appraise Max Weber's perspectives on Islam and its historical development. Eight specialists on Islam and two sociologists explore many dimensions of Weber's comments on Islam along with Weber's conceptual framework. The volume's introduction links the discussions to contemporary issues and debates. Wolfgang Schluchter reconstructs Weber's conceptual apparatus as it applies to Islam and its historical development. In subsequent chapters Islamic specialists consider such major topics as the developmental history of Islam Islamic fundamentalism Islamic reform Islamic law and capitalism secularization in Islam as well as the value of attempting to apply Weber's concept of sects to Islam. While some authors find flaws in Weber's factual knowledge of Islam they also find considerable merit in the kinds of questions Weber raised. Contributors to the volume include highly respected contemporary international scholars of Islam: Ira Lapidus Nehemia Levtzion Richard M. Eaton Peter Hardy Rudolph Peters Barbara Metcalf Francis Robinson Patricia Crone Michael Cook and S. N. Eisenstadt. Toby Huff's introduction not only knits the thematics of the separate essays together but adds its own stresses while engaging the contributors in dialogue and debate about fundamental issues. This acute collective analysis establishes a new benchmark for understanding Weber and Islam. This book also provides an up-to-date overview of the developmental history of many aspects of Islam. A major reappraisal of the entire span of Max Weber's sociological thought on Islam this book will appeal to a wide range of scholars and laymen interested in the Islamic world. It will be of particular interest to sociologists specializing in religion and Middle East area specialists.

Max Weber A Biography

Max Weber A Biography

A founder of contemporary social science Max Weber was born in Germany in 1864. At his death 56 years later he was nationally known for his scholarly and political writings but it was the international reception of his oeuvre over the last forty years that has made him world-famous. The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism The Economic Ethics of the World Religions and his magnum opus Economy and Society with its treatment of the relations of economics politics law and religion belong to the great achievements of 20th-century social science. The groundwork for the posthumous Weber reception was laid by Weber's widow Marianne a well-known feminist writer who followed up her edition of his collected works with one of the greatest biographies in a generation that produced many important accounts of itself. Although unavailable in English until a decade ago the importance of Marianne Weber's 1926 work had been widely understood. Sociologist Robert A. Nisbet called it a moving and deeply felt biographical memoir. Historian Gerhard Masur cited the book as the foundation of all further inquiries into Max Weber's life and influence. Beginning with Max's ancestry and early years Marianne Weber guides us through his life as student young lawyer scholar and political writer quoting liberally from his voluminous correspondence. Her account of his nervous breakdown after 1897 which curtailed his academic career but ultimately strengthened his creative energies provides deep insight into some of the personal tensions that troubled him to the end. In addition to her perceptive personal and intellectual life before the First World War describing many scholars social reformers politicians and literary figures within and beyond the famous Heidelberg circle of the Webers. The new introduction by Guenther Roth situates Marianne Weber's own role in the contemporary setting and discusses the current state of Weber research and of the international Weber reception. | Max Weber A Biography

The Royal Flying Corps the Western Front and the Control of the Air 1914–1918

The Royal Flying Corps the Western Front and the Control of the Air 1914–1918

By the middle of 1918 the British Army had successfully mastered the concept of ’all arms’ warfare on the Western Front. This doctrine integrating infantry artillery armoured vehicles and - crucially - air power was to prove highly effective and formed the basis of major military operations for the next hundred years. Yet whilst much has been written on the utilisation of ground forces the air element still tends to be studied in isolation from the army as a whole. In order to move beyond the usual 'aircraft and aces' approach this book explores the conceptual origins of the control of the air and the role of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) within the British army. In so doing it addresses four key themes. First it explores and defines the most fundamental air power concept - the control of the air - by examining its conceptual origins before and during the First World War. Second it moves beyond the popular history of air power during the First World War to reveal the complexity of the topic. Third it reintegrates the study of air power during the First World War specifically that of the RFC into the strategic operational organisational and intellectual contexts of the era as well as embedding the study within the respective scholarly literatures of these contexts. Fourth the book reinvigorates an entrenched historiography by challenging the usually critical interpretation of the RFC’s approach to the control of the air providing new perspectives on air power during the First World War. This includes an exploration of the creation of the RAF and its impact on the development of air power concepts. | The Royal Flying Corps the Western Front and the Control of the Air 1914–1918
