The New Demagogues Religion Masculinity and the Populist Epoch

The New Demagogues Religion Masculinity and the Populist Epoch

Chapter 4 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4. 0 license available at http://www. taylorfrancis. com/books/e/9780429431197 Focused on the emergence of US President Donald Trump the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union and the recruitment of Islamic State foreign fighters from Western Muslim communities this book explores the ways in which the decay and corruption of key social institutions has created a vacuum of intellectual and moral guidance for working people and deprived them of hope and an upward social mobility long considered central to the social contract of Western liberal democracy. Examining the exploitation of this vacuum of leadership and opportunity by new demagogues the author considers two important yet overlooked dimensions of this new populism: the mobilization of both religion and masculinity. By understanding religion as a dynamic social force that can be mobilized for purposes of social solidarity and by appreciating the sociological arguments that hyper-masculinity is caused by social injury Roose considers how these key social factors have been particularly important in contributing to the emergence of the new demagogues and their followers. Roose identifies the challenges that this poses for Western liberal democracy and argues that states must look beyond identity politics and exclusively rights-based claims and instead consider classical conceptions of citizenship. | The New Demagogues Religion Masculinity and the Populist Epoch

A Critical History of Health Films in Central and Eastern Europe and Beyond

A Critical History of Health Films in Central and Eastern Europe and Beyond

The burgeoning scholarship on Western health films stands in stark contrast to the vacuum in the historical conceptualization of Eastern European films. This book develops a nonlinear historical model that revises their unique role in the inception of national cinematography and establishing supranational health security. Readers witness the revelation of an unknown history concerning how the health films produced in Eastern European countries not only adopted Western patterns of propaganda but actively participated in its formation especially with regard to those considered “others”: Women and the populations of the periphery. The authors elaborate on the long “echo” of the discursive practices introduced by health films within public health propaganda as well as the attempts to negate and deconstruct such practices by rebellious filmmakers. A wide range of methods including the analysis of the sociological biographies of filmmakers the historical reconstruction of public campaigns against diseases and an investigation into the production of health films contextualizes these films along a multifaceted continuum stretching between the adaptation of global patterns and the cultivation of national authenticities. The book is aimed at those who study the history of film the history of public health Central and Eastern European countries and global history. | A Critical History of Health Films in Central and Eastern Europe and Beyond

Environmental Crises in Central Asia From steppes to seas from deserts to glaciers

Environmental Crises in Central Asia From steppes to seas from deserts to glaciers

Environmental conditions do not exist in a vacuum. They are influenced by science politics history public policy culture economics public attitudes and competing priorities as well as past human decisions. In the case of Central Asia such Soviet-era decisions include irrigation systems and physical infrastructure that are now crumbling mine tailings that leach pollutants into soil and groundwater and abandoned factories that are physically decrepit and contaminated with toxic chemicals. Environmental Crises in Central Asia highlights major environmental challenges confronting the region’s former Soviet republics: Kazakhstan Kyrgyzstan Tajikistan Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. They include threats to the Caspian and Aral seas the impact of climate change on glaciers desertification deforestation destruction of habitat and biodiversity radioactive and hazardous wastes water quality and supply energy exploration and development pesticides and food security and environmental health. The ramifications of these challenges cross national borders and may affect economic political and cultural relationships on a vast geographic scale. At the same time the region’s five governments have demonstrated little resolve to address these complex challenges. This book is a valuable multi-disciplinary resource for academics scholars and policymakers in environmental sciences geography political science natural resources mass communications public health and economics. | Environmental Crises in Central Asia From steppes to seas from deserts to glaciers

Economies of Peace Economy Formation Processes in Conflict-Affected Societies

Economies of Peace Economy Formation Processes in Conflict-Affected Societies

Looking beyond and beneath the macro level this book examines the processes and outcomes of the interaction of economic reforms and socio-economic peacebuilding programmes with and international interventions in people’s lived realities in conflict-affected societies. The contributions argue that disregarding socio-economic aspects of peace and how they relate to the everyday leaves a vacuum in the understanding of the formation of post-conflict economies. To address this gap the book outlines and deploys the concept of ‘post-conflict economy formation’. This is a multifaceted phenomenon including both formal and informal processes that occur in the post-conflict period and contribute to the introduction adjustment or abolition of economic practices institutions and rules that inform the transformation of the socio-economic fabric of the society. The contributions engage with existing statebuilding and peacebuilding debates while bringing in critical political economy perspectives. Specifically they analyse processes of post-conflict economy formation and the navigation between livelihood needs; local translations of the liberal hegemonic order; and different sparse manifestations of welfare states. The book concludes that a sustainable peace requires the formation of peace economies: economies that work towards reducing structural inequalities and grievances of the (pre-)conflict period as well as addressing the livelihood concerns of citizens. This book was originally published as a special issue of Civil Wars. | Economies of Peace Economy Formation Processes in Conflict-Affected Societies

Aldous Huxley A Quest for Values

Aldous Huxley A Quest for Values

In the moral vacuum and world of shifting values following World War I Aldous Huxley was both a sensitive reflector and an articulate catalyst. This work provides a highly illuminating analysis of Huxley's evolution from skeptic to mystic. As Milton Birnbaum shows in a perceptive interpretation of Huxley's poetry fiction essays and biographies-what evolved in Huxley's moral and intellectual pilgrimage was not so much a change in direction as a shift in emphasis. Even in the sardonic Huxley of the 1920s and 1930s there is a moral concern. In the later Huxley there are traces of the satirical skepticism which delighted his readers in the decades preceding World War II. A man of letters a keen observer seeker of new ways while profoundly knowledgeable in the truths of ancient wisdom Huxley tried to achieve a symbiotic synthesis of the best of all worlds. In clarifying and interpreting Huxley's intellectual moral and philosophical development Birnbaum touches upon all the subjects that came under the scrutiny of a singularly encyclopedic mind. This book is of great worth to those interested both in Huxley the brilliant satirist and in Huxley the seeker of salvation. In his search Huxley typified the modern quest for values. Milton Birnbaum's study is an invaluable guide in that journey. His new introduction takes account of research and analysis of Huxley that has occurred since this book's original publication. | Aldous Huxley A Quest for Values

A History of the Symphony The Grand Genre

A History of the Symphony The Grand Genre

A History of the Symphony: The Grand Genre identifies the underlying cultural factors that have shaped the symphony over the past three hundred years presenting a unified view of the entire history of the genre. The text goes beyond discussions of individual composers and the stylistic evolution of the genre to address what constitutes a symphony within each historical period describing how such works fit into the lives of composers and audiences of the time recognizing that they do not exist in a vacuum but rather as the products of numerous external forces spurring their creation. In three parts the text proceeds chronologically drawing connections between musical examples across regions and eras: The Classical Symphony The Romantic Symphony The Symphony in the Modern Era Within this broad chronology—from the earliest Italian symphonies of the 18th century to the most experimental works of the 20th century—discussion of the development of the genre often breaks down along national lines that outline divergent but parallel paths of stylistic growth. In consideration of what is and is not a symphony musical developments in other genres are presented as they relate to the symphony genres such as the serenade the tone poem and the concert overture. Suitable for a one-semester course as well as a full-year syllabus and with illustrative musical examples throughout A History of the Symphony places composers and works in sociological and musical contexts while confronting the fundamental question: What is a symphony? | A History of the Symphony The Grand Genre

Human Rights Tribal Movements and Violence Tribal Tenacity in the Twenty-first Century in Central Eastern India

Human Rights Tribal Movements and Violence Tribal Tenacity in the Twenty-first Century in Central Eastern India

This book sheds light on the issues of structural violence perpetrated against the tribes and analyzes the infringement of human rights of the tribes in the neo-liberal hegemonic context due to which the tribes are going through massive upheaval – induced displacement and dispossession from livelihood. They are unable to advance their existentialist interests and fulfil their aspirations because of which they are taking recourse to extremism and get caught into the battle of state sponsored militia and forces on the one hand and the extremists on the other. The mechanism of structural violence is embedded in the global capitalism which has its roots in colonialism and imperialism. Tribal movements of the central-eastern India inspired by human rights exigencies are up against this imperial project that violates the trajectories of state-led development initiatives for the reason that these movements have been brutally suppressed by the military forces. This has given a political impetus to the tribes for self-assertion. Similarly tribal activism in the central-eastern India during the twenty-first century addresses the issue of violence in nature and the infringement of human rights in the context of development-induced displacement and the spread of extremism. The book is based on the collection of data from the field investigations done during the last seven years and it will definitely fill the vacuum in the history of tribal movements in the neo-liberal era. | Human Rights Tribal Movements and Violence Tribal Tenacity in the Twenty-first Century in Central Eastern India

Austrian Historical Memory and National Identity

Austrian Historical Memory and National Identity

When the Hapsburg monarchy disintegrated after World War I Austria was not considered to be a viable entity. In a vacuum of national identity the hapless country drifted toward a larger Germany. After World War II Austrian elites constructed a new identity based on being a victim of Nazi Germany. Cold war Austria however envisioned herself as a neutral island of the blessed between and separate from both superpower blocs. Now with her membership in the European Union secured Austria is reconstructing her painful historical memory and national identity. In 1996 she celebrates her 1000-year anniversary. In this volume of Contemporary Austrian Studies Franz Mathis and Brigitte Mazohl-Wallnig argue that regional identities in Austria have deeper historical roots than the many artificial and ineffective attempts to construct a national identity. Heidemarie Uhl Anton Pelinka and Brigitte Bailer discuss the post-World War II construction of the victim mythology. Robert Herzstein analyses the crucial impact of the 1986 Waldheim election imploding Austria's comforting historical memory as a nation of victims. Wolfram Kaiser shows Austria's difficult adjustments to the European Union and the larger challenges of constructing a new European identity. Chad Berry's analysis of American World War II memory establishes a useful counterpoint to construction of historical memory in a different national context. A special forum on Austrian intelligence studies presents a fascinating reconstruction by Timothy Naftali of the investigation by Anglo-American counterintelligence into the retreat of Hitler's troops into the Alps during World War II. Rudiger Overmans' research note presents statistics on lower death rates of Austrian soldiers in the German army. Review essays by Gunther Kronenbitter and Gunter Bischof book reviews and a 1995 survey of Austrian politics round out the volume. Austrian Historical Memory and National Identity will be of intense interest to foreign policy analysts historians and scholars concerned with the unique elements of identity and nationality in Central European politics.
