Incarcerating Motherhood The Enduring Harms of First Short Periods of Imprisonment on Mothers

Incarcerating Motherhood The Enduring Harms of First Short Periods of Imprisonment on Mothers

Incarcerating Motherhood explores how initial short period in prisons can negatively impact mothers and their children. We have much yet to understand about the enduring harms caused by first time incarceration especially for minimal time periods and for mothers with dependent children. With large numbers of female prisoners currently incarcerated for short periods in England and Wales (either on short sentences or remand) many of whom are primary caregivers this book asks: what kind of impact does this imprisonment has on both parent and child in the long term?Based on original research the experiences of sixteen mothers are presented to voice the material physical and emotional consequences of short-term imprisonment. The book explores to what extent these mothers lose their sense of identity in a short space of time whether this continues to affect them post-custody and what level of support they are provided during and post-custody. This book also explores what bearing the initial separation and the care provided during the mother’s absence will have on their children’s lives as well as whether the affects of imprisonment on the mother also increase the vulnerability of her children. Incarcerating Motherhood provides a platform for readers to hear how a ‘short sharp shock’ can cause enduring harms to an already vulnerable group in society and how even short-term imprisonment have long-lasting and multi-dimensional consequences. | Incarcerating Motherhood The Enduring Harms of First Short Periods of Imprisonment on Mothers

Airbnb Short-Term Rentals and the Future of Housing

Airbnb Short-Term Rentals and the Future of Housing

How do Airbnb and short-term rentals affect housing and communities? Locating the origins and success of Airbnb in the conditions wrought by the 2008 financial crisis the authors bring together a diverse body of literature and construct case studies of cities in the US Australia and Germany to examine the struggles of local authorities to protect their housing and neighborhoods from the increasing professionalization and commercialization of Airbnb. The book argues that the most disruptive impact of Airbnb and short-term rentals has been on housing and neighborhoods in urban centers where housing markets are stressed. Despite its claims Airbnb has revealed itself as platform capitalism incentivizing speculation in residential housing. At the heart of this trajectory is its business model and control over access to data. In a first narrative the authors discuss how Airbnb has institutionalized short-term rentals consequently removing long-term rentals contributing to rising rents and changing neighborhood milieus as visitors replace long-term residents. In a second narrative the authors trace the transformation of short-term rentals into a multibillion-dollar hybrid real estate sector promoting a variety of flexible tenure models. While these models provide more options for owners and investors they have the potential to undermine housing security and exacerbate housing inequality. While the overall effects have been similar across countries and cities depending on housing systems local response has varied from less restrictive in Australia to increasingly restrictive in the United States and most restrictive in Germany. Although Airbnb has made some concessions it has not given any city the data needed to efficiently enforce regulations making for costly externalities. Written in a clear and direct style this volume will appeal to students and scholars in Urban Studies Urban Planning Housing and Tourism Studies. | Airbnb Short-Term Rentals and the Future of Housing

Post-Jungian Psychology and the Short Stories of Ray Bradbury and Kurt Vonnegut Golden Apples of the Monkey House

Post-Jungian Psychology and the Short Stories of Ray Bradbury and Kurt Vonnegut Golden Apples of the Monkey House

In this book Steve Gronert Ellerhoff explores short stories by Ray Bradbury and Kurt Vonnegut written between 1943 and 1968 with a post-Jungian approach. Drawing upon archetypal theories of myth from Joseph Campbell James Hillman and their forbearer C. G. Jung Ellerhoff demonstrates how short fiction follows archetypal patterns that can illuminate our understanding of the authors their times and their culture. In practice a post-Jungian ‘mythodology’ is shown to yield great insights for the literary criticism of short fiction. Chapters in this volume carefully contextualise and historicize each story including Bradbury and Vonnegut’s earliest and most imaginatively fantastic works. The archetypal constellations shaping Vonnegut’s early works are shown to be war and fragmentation while those in Bradbury’s are family and the wholeness of the sun. Analysis is complemented by the explored significance of illustrations that featured alongside the stories in their first publications. By uncovering the ways these popular writers redressed old myths in new tropes—and coined new narrative elements for hopes and fears born of their era—the book reveals a fresh method which can be applied to all imaginative short stories increasing understanding and critical engagement. Post-Jungian Psychology and the Short Stories of Ray Bradbury and Kurt Vonnegut is an important text for a number of fields from Jungian and Post-Jungian studies to short story theoriesand American studies to Bradbury and Vonnegut studies. Scholars and students of literature will come away with a renewed appreciation for an archetypal approach to criticism while the book will also be of great interest to practising depth psychologists seeking to incorporate short stories into therapy. | Post-Jungian Psychology and the Short Stories of Ray Bradbury and Kurt Vonnegut Golden Apples of the Monkey House
