Myers-Briggs Typology vs. Jungian Individuation Overcoming One-Sidedness in Self and Society

Myers-Briggs Typology vs. Jungian Individuation Overcoming One-Sidedness in Self and Society

In Myers-Briggs Typology vs Jungian Individuation: Overcoming One-Sidedness in Self and Society Steve Myers unravels the century-long misinterpretation of Jung’s seminal text Psychological Types to show how Jung’s thinking offers solutions to the conflicts that have torn apart our societies. By challenging the popular interpretation of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® and similar instruments Myers argues that we have not only missed Jung’s main proposition but our contemporary interpretation runs counter to it. Myers aims to rediscover the overlooked argument of Jung’s Psychological Types and make it of practical relevance to contemporary issues. He intends to refocus rather than discard Myers-Briggs typology showing that there are further stages of development after becoming a type and that typological principles have a much broader application. Raising queries about the way typology is used in contemporary society Myers uses literary examples such as Romeo and Juliet and Carl Spitteler’s Prometheus and Epimetheus to show how one-sidedness leads to conflict and to illustrate Jung’s solution to the problem of opposites. He also applies this to real-life political crises by examining the decision-making of key political figures such as Nelson Mandela Robert Mugabe and those involved in Brexit or the Northern Ireland peace process. The latter part of the book relates Jung’s process of typological development to his later writings on alchemy notably the axiom of Maria to show how they all have a common goal the transformation of attitude. The book concludes by analysing the implications of the divergence of Myers-Briggs typology and Jungian individuation for the communities who use those ideas. This book puts Jungian individuation back at the forefront of debate and will be essential reading for intermediate and advanced users of Myers-Briggs typology. Due to its political relevance it will also be of interest to Jungian analysts and their clients and to academics and students of Jungian and post-Jungian ideas and political science. | Myers-Briggs Typology vs. Jungian Individuation Overcoming One-Sidedness in Self and Society

Cultivating Capstones Designing High-Quality Culminating Experiences for Student Learning

Cultivating Capstones Designing High-Quality Culminating Experiences for Student Learning

Capstones have been a part of higher education curriculum for over two centuries with the goal of integrating student learning to cap off their undergraduate experience. In practice capstones are most often delivered as a course or include a significant project that addresses a problem or contributes new knowledge. This edited collection draws on multi-year multi-institutional and mixed-methods studies to inform the development of best practices for cultivating capstones at a variety of higher education institutions. The book is divided into three parts: Part One offers typographies of capstones illustrating the diversity of experiences included in this high-impact practice while also identifying essential characteristics that contribute to high-quality culminating experiences for students. Part Three offers research-informed strategies for professional development to support implementation of high-quality student learning experiences across a variety of campus contexts. High Leverage Practices for Inclusive Classrooms

The Individual Vs. The Public Interest Political Ideology And National Forest Policy

The Individual Vs. The Public Interest Political Ideology And National Forest Policy

Central to the controversy surrounding U. S. natural resources policy is the conflict between environmentalists and proponents of development. Examining the evolution of the philosophies underlying that conflict Dr. Alston traces the failure to achieve a unified resources policy to the seemingly incompatible ideological positions held by resource specialists interest groups policymakers econo mists and foresters. His analysis goes beyond his case study of na ional forest policy to focus on an ancient question basic to policy making in a democratic society: How can government provide a sociopolitical framework that accomodates both individual interests and the need for unity in a collective existence? Only within this broader framework he argues is it possible to determine the proper division between private and public resource management or the proper role of government in natural resources planning. Incorporating a critical evaluation of the development of classical and neoclassical economic theory this work makes clear the need to strike a balance between a strictly individualistic and an ecological point of view. Dr. Alston illustrates the ideological conflicts that complicate resources planning and explores the possibility of a new ideology capable of accomodating and inte grating differences to meet the complex needs of society. | The Individual Vs. The Evolution of English Language Learners in Japan Crossing Japan the West and South East Asia

The Evolution of English Language Learners in Japan Crossing Japan the West and South East Asia

This book seeks a better understanding of the sociocultural and ideological factors that influence English study in Japan and study-abroad contexts such as university-bound high schools female-dominant English classes at college ESL schools in Canada and private or university-affiliated ESL programs in Singapore and Malaysia. The discussion is based not only on data garnered from Japanese EFL learners and Japanese/overseas educators but also on official English language policies and commercial magazine discourses about English study for Japanese people. The book addresses seemingly incompatible themes that are either entrenched in or beyond Japan’s EFL context such as: Japan’s decades-long poorly-performing English education vs. its equally long-lived status as an economic power; Japanese English learners’ preference for native English speakers/norms in at-home Japanese EFL contexts vs. their friendship with other Asian students in western study-abroad contexts; Japanese female students’ dream of using English to further their careers vs. Japanese working women’s English study for self-enrichment; Japanese society’s obsession with globalization through English study vs. the Japanese economy sustained by monolingual Japanese businessmen; Japanese business magazines’ frequent cover issues on global business English study vs. Japanese working women’s magazines’ less frequent and markedly feminized discourses about English study. | The Evolution of English Language Learners in Japan Crossing Japan the West and South East Asia

Spatial Implications and Planning Criteria for High-Speed Rail Cities and Regions

Spatial Implications and Planning Criteria for High-Speed Rail Cities and Regions

Spatial Implications and Planning Criteria for High-speed Rail Cities and Regions evaluates the varied experiences that HSR systems have brought about to different station-cities and their regional territories around the world with an eye towards better future planning and policy of such systems. This edited volume draws from examples of high-speed rail operations in different cities in Europe and Asia to depict the various impacts of this major transportation infrastructure. It attempts to distinguish the short- and long-term impacts described in the literature classifying them into regional and inter-urban effects urban effects and wider economic impacts. Planning challenges appear at two major points: 1) during the initial planning stage that includes the route and location of stations; and 2) during the development process that follows. The case studies in the book concentrate on a variety of topics from the impact of high-speed rail on population growth in some station-cities to the regional economic impacts that an HSR system can bring about to the larger territories it passes through to the potential of station-cities to better attract firms or to experience increases in tourism and commerce. They also assess planning strategies and experiences from station-cities to draw lessons for future HSR planning policies. The Chapters in this book were originally published in a special issue of European Planning Studies.

Vertical Differentiation for Gifted Advanced and High-Potential Students 25 Strategies to Stretch Student Thinking

Delivering on the Promise of High-Impact Practices Research and Models for Achieving Equity Fidelity Impact and Scale

Delivering on the Promise of High-Impact Practices Research and Models for Achieving Equity Fidelity Impact and Scale

Research shows that enriching learning experiences such as learning communities service-learning undergraduate research internships and senior culminating experiences – collectively known as High-Impact Practices (HIPs) – are positively associated with student engagement; deep and integrated learning; and personal and educational gains for all students – particularly for historically underserved students including first-generation students and racially minoritized populations. While HIPs’ potential benefits for student learning retention and graduation are recognized and are being increasingly integrated across higher education programs much of that potential remains unrealized; and their implementation frequently uneven. Colleges are eager to use the HIP nomenclature for recruitment promoting equity for traditionally underserved student populations and preparing lifelong learners and successful professionals. However HIPs defy easy categorization or standardized implementation. They rely on fidelity quality and consistency – being “done well” – to achieve their learning outcomes; and above all require attention to access and equity if they are to fulfill their promise of benefitting all student populations equally. The goal of Delivering on the Promise of High-Impact Practices is to provide examples from around the country of the ways educators are advancing equity promoting fidelity achieving scale and strengthening assessment of their own local high-impact practices. Its chapters bring together the best current scholarship methodologies and evidence-based practices within the HIPs field illustrating new approaches to faculty professional development culture and coalition building research and assessment and continuous improvement that help institutions understand and extend practices with a demonstrated high impact. For proponents and practitioners this book offers perspectives data and critiques to interrogate and improve practice. For administrators it provides an understanding of what’s needed to deliver the necessary support. | Delivering on the Promise of High-Impact Practices Research and Models for Achieving Equity Fidelity Impact and Scale
