Statistics in Corpus Linguistics Research A New Approach

Statistics in Corpus Linguistics Research A New Approach

Traditional approaches focused on significance tests have often been difficult for linguistics researchers to visualise. Statistics in Corpus Linguistics Research: A New Approach breaks these significance tests down for researchers in corpus linguistics and linguistic analysis promoting a visual approach to understanding the performance of tests with real data and demonstrating how to derive new intervals and tests. Accessibly written this book discusses the ‘why’ behind the statistical model allowing readers a greater facility for choosing their own methodologies. Accessibly written for those with little to no mathematical or statistical background it explains the mathematical fundamentals of simple significance tests by relating them to confidence intervals. With sample datasets and easy-to-read visuals this book focuses on practical issues such as how to: • pose research questions in terms of choice and constraint; • employ confidence intervals correctly (including in graph plots); • select optimal significance tests (and what results mean); • measure the size of the effect of one variable on another; • estimate the similarity of distribution patterns; and • evaluate whether the results of two experiments significantly differ. Appropriate for anyone from the student just beginning their career to the seasoned researcher this book is both a practical overview and valuable resource. | Statistics in Corpus Linguistics Research A New Approach

Counselling Male Sexual Offenders A Strengths-Focused Approach

Counselling Male Sexual Offenders A Strengths-Focused Approach

Counselling Male Sexual Offenders: A Strengths-Focused Approach informs readers how to utilize an easily accessible integrative strengths-focused counselling approach with men who pose a sexual risk. However as the number of internet offenders increases exponentially and more historic abuse cases emerge understanding and treating the phenomenon of sex offending can play a significant role in preventing sexual crime and reducing harm to victims. In addition to being a ‘how to do book’ in Counselling Male Sexual Offenders the author explores at depth the inner processes of counsellors working with this client group. It presents treatment formats and exercises for engaging individuals who deny and minimize harmful sexual behaviour. With illustrative case studies of various types of sex offenders – as well as statements from sex offenders and probation officers themselves – this text provides one of the most comprehensive insights available into the authentic experience of treating this population. The Transformation of Rural Africa

The Transformation of Rural Africa

Contemporary discussions of Africa’s recent growth have largely interpreted such growth in terms of structural transformation based mainly on national- and sectoral-level data. However the micro-level processes driving this transformation are still unclear and remain the subject of debate. This collection provides a micro economic foundation for understanding the particular growth processes at work within the region’s rural areas and in so doing provides important insights for policy action. The book provides valuable household- and farm-level evidence about the drivers of rural labour productivity improvements in access to markets investment in food value chains and indeed the role of rural economic growth in Africa’s ongoing rural transformation processes. Some of the features of Africa’s ongoing rural transformation are similar to those of agricultural transformation as experienced in Asia and elsewhere. However other features of Africa’s rural transformation are unique and pose important challenges for development policy and planning. Together the studies compiled in this volume provide an updated evidence-based and policy-relevant understanding of where African countries are in their developmental trajectories and the region’s prospects for achieving inclusive forms of development over the next several decades. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Development Studies. | The Transformation of Rural Africa

Foundations for a Humanitarian Economy Re-thinking Boethius’ Consolation of Philosophy

Foundations for a Humanitarian Economy Re-thinking Boethius’ Consolation of Philosophy

The modern global economy and discipline of economics place mathematical calculation above human concern. However a re-reading of Boethius’ The Consolation of Philosophy can positively highlight the contrast in values and spirit of the early medieval European world with our own scientific age. This book discusses the historical and cultural contexts that influenced Boethius’ writing and explores how Consolation offers a radically different understanding of economic concepts: wealth from inner happiness and virtues poverty from hoarding outer possessions self-sufficiency in the greater whole enlightenment through misfortune and development as fruition from the Good. These economic considerations resonate with a range of heterodox economic perspectives such as Ecological and Buddhist Economics. The fundamental revaluations gained through Boethius pose a critique of mainstream neoclassical and neoliberal economics: to consumerism avarice growth and technology fetishism and market rationality. These economic foundations resonate into a time when global crises raise the question of fundamental human priorities offering alternatives to an ever-expanding industrial market economy designed for profit and helping to avoid irrevocable socio-ecological disasters. The issues raised and questioned in this book will be of significant interest to readers with concern for pluralist approaches to economics philosophy classics ancient history and theology. | Foundations for a Humanitarian Economy Re-thinking Boethius’ Consolation of Philosophy

Sexual Difference Abjection and Liminal Spaces A Psychoanalytic Approach to the Abhorrence of the Feminine

Sexual Difference Abjection and Liminal Spaces A Psychoanalytic Approach to the Abhorrence of the Feminine

This book uses an interdisciplinary approach to explore the ways in which sexual difference can be understood as an encounter with otherness through the abjected investigating social discourses and unconscious anxieties around monstrous women throughout history and how they may challenge these characterizations. The author expands on Barbara Creed’s notion of the monstrous-feminine to give a specifically Lacanian analysis of different types of feminine monsters such as Mary Toft Andrea Yates Lillith and Medusa. Drawing on Lacan’s theory of sexuation the book interrogates characterizations of pregnant women during the Enlightenment women who commit filicide mothers in the psychoanalytic clinic and women with borderline personality disorder. Chapters explore how encounters with a feminine subject in the Lacanian sense can manifest in misogynistic practices aimed at women as well as how a Deleuzian notion of becoming-other may pose a challenge to their interpretation in a phallocentric meaning-making system. Creatively engaging the work of both Jacques Lacan and Gilles Deleuze the text goes beyond simply identifying misogynistic practices by probing the relational unconscious dynamics between hegemonic groups and those designated as other. Approaching the concept of the borderline from a critical and transdisciplinary perspective this text will appeal to postgraduate students and researchers from Lacanian psychoanalysis gender studies cultural studies and critical psychology. | Sexual Difference Abjection and Liminal Spaces A Psychoanalytic Approach to the Abhorrence of the Feminine
