Making Sense of Statistics A Conceptual Overview

Making Sense of Statistics A Conceptual Overview

Making Sense of Statistics Eighth Edition is the ideal introduction to the concepts of descriptive and inferential statistics for students undertaking their first research project. It presents each statistical concept in a series of short steps then uses worked examples and exercises to enable students to apply their own learning. It focuses on presenting the “why ” as well as the “how” of statistical concepts rather than computations and formulas. As such it is suitable for students from all disciplines regardless of mathematical background. Only statistical techniques that are almost universally included in introductory statistics courses and widely reported in journals have been included. This conceptual book is useful for all study levels from undergraduate to doctoral level across disciplines. Once students understand and feel comfortable with the statistics presented in this book they should find it easy to master additional statistical concepts. New to the Eighth Edition Reorganization of chapters to allow better progress in conceptual understanding Additional discussions on program evaluation displays of outcomes and examples Chapter objectives at the beginning of each chapter are listed with clear learning objectives for the reader Expanded appendices include a reference to common computational formulas and examples A glossary of key terms has been updated to function as a useful vocabulary list for use in a first course in statistics Updated online resources including a basic math review and answers PowerPoint slides and a test bank of questions | Making Sense of Statistics A Conceptual Overview

The Italian Diaspora in South Africa Nostalgia Identity and Belonging in the Second and Third Generations

This book investigates the experiences of second- and third-generation Italians living in South Africa exploring how nostalgia for Italy influences their sense of identity and belonging. The Italian community in South Africa is a unique diaspora with a complex history including roots in Italian colonial activities in Africa and in World War II. This book looks at how the descendants of these early migrants take pride in being Italian and value the Italian language. They also ascribe much importance to their family roots and have often created a romanticized image of Italy mostly based on childhood vacation visits. The longing for an imaginary idealized version of Italy is closely linked to their wider search for a sense of identity and belonging against the backdrop of South African society currently still grappling with its own multicultural identity. Interdisciplinary by design this book draws on insights from both cultural studies and psychology in order to shine a light on an important and under-studied diasporic community. The book will be of interest to scholars from across migration studies and the Humanities in general. Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) is an interdisciplinary and applied field that draws from developmental science family science and other social sciences. Research Foundations of Human Development and Family Science is a textbook that provides an introduction to the diverse scientific research methods that form the foundation of scholarship and practice in HDFS. In Part I Kathleen D. Dyer explores science. She distinguishes empirical scientific research from common sense and from knowledge gained from personal experience. This section also includes a discussion of the strategies used by pseudoscience to exploit the well-deserved credibility of science providing relevant examples. Part II examines systematic empiricism through sampling and measurement. HDFS scholars use a wide array of measurement tools including self-report (interviews questionnaires and self-report tasks) observations (participant naturalistic and structured) objective tests physiological measures and several types of archival records. Part III introduces the use of study design to achieve falsifiability in scientific research including an overview of various orientations to time used in research as well as four different study designs: qualitative prevalence correlational and experimental. Finally Part IV addresses the public verifiability of science including how scientific consensus is developed the use of literature reviews to identify convergence of evidence and how scientific literacy translates into evidence-based professional practice. Illustrated throughout with studies foundational to the discipline as examples of the strategies described in the text Research Foundations for Human Development and Family Science is a comprehensive accessible core textbook for undergraduate research methods classes in HDFS. It introduces the discipline of HDFS and challenges students to understand the limitations of common sense and the threat of pseudoscience for those work professionally with children and families. | Research Foundations of Human Development and Family Science Science versus Nonsense
