The Political Economy Of Argentina Power And Class Since 1930

The Political Economy Of Argentina Power And Class Since 1930

Economic developments in Argentina over the last half-century present a puzzle to observers: Before World War II the nation's per capita income and standard of living were comparable to those in countries like Canada and Australia; today Argentina is submerged in deep economic social and political crises. In analyzing the events that led to this reversal the author enhances our understanding of the phenomenon of arrested economic development in Argentina and similar developing countries. Dr. Peralta-Ramos approaches the problem with a dialectical interpretation of contemporary Argentinian history examining crucial economic and political developments since 1930 from the standpoint of class interests in conflict. She discusses early government strategies for industrialization and their consequences for economic growth and institutional stability maintaining that state policies generated a struggle for the appropriation of income and ultimately for control of the state not only between the middle classes and the urban working class but also between the agrarian and industrial sectors of the bourgeoisie. The ensuing political instability led to further fluctuations in economic policy to an erosion of institutional legitimacy and eventually to state terrorism. Ongoing political crisis war and military rule as well as soaring speculation and dwindling capital hastened the downward spiral of the Argentinian economy. Dr. Peralta-Ramos offers in this book an innovative theoretical approach for examining how power relations can inhibit economic development and produce a fragile institutional system that threatens democracy. | The Political Economy Of Argentina Power And Class Since 1930

The Law Officer's Pocket Manual 2022 Edition

The Law Officer's Pocket Manual 2022 Edition

The Law Officer’s Pocket Manual is a handy pocket-sized spiral-bound manual that highlights basic legal rules for quick reference and offers examples showing how those rules are applied. The manual provides concise guidance based on U. S. Supreme Court rulings on constitutional law issues and other legal developments covering arrest search surveillance and other routine as well as sensitive areas of law enforcement. It includes more than 100 examples drawn from leading cases to provide guidance on how to act in a wide variety of situations. Some new material in the 2022 Edition: In a unanimous ruling the U. S. Supreme Court curbed warrantless home entries. The court said that police can’t automatically pursue fleeing misdemeanor suspects into a residence without a warrant. Whether exigent circumstances exist depends on the particular facts of each case. In another case the high court ruled that when a police officer applies force to a suspect’s body with intent to restrain this is a seizure under the Fourth Amendment. The Supreme Court in a unanimous ruling bolstered home protections. It ruled that the community caretaking exception to the Fourth Amendment’s warrant requirement doesn’t extend to the home. The U. S. Supreme Court in a unanimous decision untangled some jurisdictional issues involving Native American state and federal enforcement officials. The court bolstered the authority of tribal police over non-American Indians traveling on public roads through reservations. In a pair of cases the Court reinforced the court-made doctrine of qualified immunity. In both cases the high court said the law was not so clearly established as to allow litigation against the officers to move forward. In a civil rights case the court sent the case back to the circuit court to determine if the suit can move forward. | The Law Officer's Pocket Manual 2022 Edition

Contested Sites in Jerusalem The Jerusalem Old City Initiative

Contested Sites in Jerusalem The Jerusalem Old City Initiative

Contested Sites in Jerusalem is the third and final volume in a series of books which collectively present in detail the work of the Jerusalem Old City Initiative or JOCI a major Canadian-led Track Two diplomatic effort undertaken between 2003 and 2014. The aim of the Initiative was to find sustainable governance solutions for the Old City of Jerusalem arguably the most sensitive and intractable of the final status issues dividing Palestinians and Israelis. This book examines the complex and often contentious issues that arise from the overlapping claims to the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif the role of UNESCO and the major implications of the JOCI Special Regime for such issues as archaeology property and the economy. Part I is dedicated to holy sites – ground zero of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict a point reinforced by the autumn 2014 disturbances which threatened to spiral out of control and engulf Palestinians and Israelis in yet another wave of violence. Parts II–IV of the volume contain studies on archaeology property and economics that were written after the completion of the Special Regime model specifically to address in depth how a Special Regime would deal with each of these three important areas. Contested Sites in Jerusalem offers an insightful explanation of the enormous challenges facing any attempt to find sustainable governance and security arrangements for the Old City in the context of a peace agreement between the Israelis and the Palestinians. It will therefore be of immense value to the policy-making community as well as anyone in academia with a focus on Middle East politics the Israeli–Palestinian conflict and the Middle East peace process. | Contested Sites in Jerusalem The Jerusalem Old City Initiative
