Microtonality and the Tuning Systems of Erv Wilson

Microtonality and the Tuning Systems of Erv Wilson

This book explores the emerging area of microtonality through an examination of the tuning theories of Erv Wilson. It is the first publication to offer a broad discussion of this influential theorist whose innovations have far-reaching ramifications for microtonal tuning systems. This study addresses the breadth and complexity of Wilson’s work by focusing on his microtonal keyboard designs as a means to investigate his tuning concepts and their practical applications. Narushima examines materials ranging from historical and experimental tunings to instrument design as well as musical applications of mathematical theories and multidimensional geometry. The volume provides an analysis of some of Wilson’s most significant theoretical ideas including the Scale Tree Moments of Symmetry Constant Structures and Combination-Product Sets. These theories offer ways to conceptualize musical scales as patterns with structural integrity and whose shapes can be altered to produce infinitely varying forms. The book shows how these structural properties can be used to map scales onto a microtonal keyboard by providing step-by-step guidelines and clearly illustrated examples. Most importantly it brings together theoretical and practical methods of tuning to enable composers performers and instrument designers to explore previously uncharted areas of microtonality making a significant contribution to the fields of music theory composition and music technology. | Microtonality and the Tuning Systems of Erv Wilson

Red Magic The World’s Best Fairy Tales Collected and Arranged by Romer Wilson

Red Magic The World’s Best Fairy Tales Collected and Arranged by Romer Wilson

With a Preface and biographies from Jack Zipes as well as the original illustrations by Kay Nielsen this collection of fairy tales originally published by the award-winning Romer Wilson – Green Magic (1928) Silver Magic (1929) and Red Magic (1930) – offers a combination of classic fairy tales alongside lesser known global and diverse tales. Red Magic contains such classics as “Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp” from the Arabian Nights “A Child’s Dream on a Star” by Dickens and “The Chimera” by Hawthorne. It also contains previously unpublished tales such as “Princess Silver Silk” and “The Enchanted Deer. ” It was Romer Wilson’s intention to combine the familiar with the unknown and to introduce authors and cultures from a variety of countries. As a researcher Wilson uncovered a remarkable amount of stories from other countries that remain unknown today. This collection gives voice to unique and intriguing tales that inspire children to have a better understanding of how people and their stories are alike despite major differences. Through his Preface and commentary Jack Zipes shows how all three books are a means to bring people together in the name of peace and justice. These books will therefore be of interest to anyone researching or studying fairy tales folklore and children’s literature as well as global or comparative literature and social justice. | Red Magic The World’s Best Fairy Tales Collected and Arranged by Romer Wilson

Nuclear France New Questions New Sources New Findings

This book offers the first non-official history of French nuclear policies which goes beyond the divide between nuclear weapons and nuclear energy policies. It addresses the sizing of France’s nuclear forces technological assistance to countries with nuclear weapons programs uranium prospection nuclear testing its health effects and protests against it as well as plans to prevent and manage accidents in nuclear power plants. It is based on new questions and new sources from France and abroad. The chapters in this volume show how independent and interdisciplinary scholarship free from conflicts of interests can uniquely advance our understanding of nuclear history and politics. This is the case because it does not treat the categories and judgments of official discourse as neutral starting points of the analysis. This volume is based on untapped primary sources from France the UK the US India South Africa and Iran on a new assessment of the health consequences of French nuclear testing in Polynesia thanks to a modern atmospheric particle transport code coupled with historical weather data open-source information about radioactive debris (“mushroom”) clouds as well as data on the composition and particle sizes of the fallout; and on new survey data about French knowledge of and attitudes towards nuclear weapons and nuclear energy. They show notably that the first generation of French nuclear forces lacked technical credibility despite reliance on outside help. Several French officials knew this as did France's allies and adversaries. Moreover French strategic collaborations associated to nuclear programs extended to India and South Africa; nuclear safety regulations changed fundamentally after the Cold War and approximately 110 000 people i. e. 90% of the French Polynesian population in the 1970s could have received doses that would qualify them for compensation according to French law. The volume will be of interest to scholars and students of history politics international relations military history war studies conflict and global governance. Most of the chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue in Cold War History. A few chapters were first published in the Nonproliferation Review Diplomacy & Statecraft and Science & Global Security. | Nuclear France New Questions New Sources New Findings

Investigating Local Knowledge New Directions New Approaches

Investigating Local Knowledge New Directions New Approaches

Originally published in 2004. Local knowledge reflects many generations of experience and problem solving by people around the world increasingly affected by globalizing forces. Such knowledge is far more sophisticated than development professionals previously assumed and as such represents an immensely valuable resource. A growing number of governments and international development agencies are recognizing that local-level knowledge and organizations offer the foundation for new participatory models of development that are both cost-effective and sustainable and ecologically and socially sound. This book provides a timely overview of new directions and new approaches to investigating the role of rural communities in generating knowledge founded on their sophisticated understandings of their environments devising mechanisms to conserve and sustain their natural resources and establishing community-based organizations that serve as forums for identifying problems and dealing with them through local-level experimentation innovation and exchange of information with other societies. These studies show that development activities that work with and through local knowledge and organizations have several important advantages over projects that operate outside them. Local knowledge informs grassroots decision-making much of which takes place through indigenous organizations and associations at the community level as people seek to identify and determine solutions to their problems. | Investigating Local Knowledge New Directions New Approaches

The Paleoconservatives New Voices of the Old Right

The Paleoconservatives New Voices of the Old Right

Paleoconservatism as a concept came into circulation during the 1980s as a rejoinder to the rise of neoconservatism. It signifies a brand of conservatism that rose up in opposition to the New Deal setting itself against the centralizing trends that define modern politics to champion the republican virtues of self-governance and celebrate the nation's varied and colorful regional cultures. This volume brings together key writings of the major representatives of Old Right thought past and present. The essays included here define a coherent intellectual tradition linking New York libertarians to unreconstructed Southern traditionalists to Midwestern agrarians. Part I is devoted to the founding fathers of the modern conservative movement. Essays by Frank Chodorov Murray Rothbard and James Burnham attack economic aspects of the New Deal big government in general and high taxes. Russell Kirk introduces the cultural paleoconservatism with its preference for social classes and distinctions of age and sex while Richard Weaver explains why culture is more important to a civilization's survival than mere material conditions. The second part covers the contemporary resurgence of the Old Right. Chilton Williamson Jr. sets out the argument against large-scale immigration on cultural and economic grounds. The divisive issue of trade is covered. William Hawkins outlines a mercantilist trade policy at odds with the free trade libertarianism of Chodorov and Rothbard. On education Allan Carlson goes further than the Beltway Right in his advocacy of home schooling. M. E. Bradford shows how the doctrine of equality of opportunity inevitably leads to greater and more tyrannical state action. The contemporary culture wars are the focus of Thomas Fleming Paul Gottfried Clyde Wilson and Samuel Francis who search for the roots of American nationalism the lessons to be drawn from the past and how they may be applied in the future. | The Paleoconservatives New Voices of the Old Right
