Studies in Class Structure

The Ritual Process Structure and Anti-Structure

The Ritual Process Structure and Anti-Structure

In The Ritual Process: Structure and Anti-Structure Victor Turner examines rituals of the Ndembu in Zambia and develops his now-famous concept of Communitas. He characterizes it as an absolute inter-human relation beyond any form of structure. The Ritual Process has acquired the status of a small classic since these lectures were first published in 1969. Turner demonstrates how the analysis of ritual behavior and symbolism may be used as a key to understanding social structure and processes. He extends Van Gennep's notion of the liminal phase of rites of passage to a more general level and applies it to gain understanding of a wide range of social phenomena. Once thought to be the vestigial organs of social conservatism rituals are now seen as arenas in which social change may emerge and be absorbed into social practice. As Roger Abrahams writes in his foreword to the revised edition: Turner argued from specific field data. His special eloquence resided in his ability to lay open a sub-Saharan African system of belief and practice in terms that took the reader beyond the exotic features of the group among whom he carried out his fieldwork translating his experience into the terms of contemporary Western perceptions. Reflecting Turner's range of intellectual interests the book emerged as exceptional and eccentric in many ways: yet it achieved its place within the intellectual world because it so successfully synthesized continental theory with the practices of ethnographic reports. | The Ritual Process Structure and Anti-Structure

The Structure of Political Geography

The Structure of Political Geography

This volume seeks to provide a sense of purpose and order to the study of political geography. The editors devise a conceptual structure for the field bringing political geography into line with trends in contemporary geography as a whole and with other social sciences. Not only do the selections contain a wide variety of contributions from other fields but the introductory essays and annotated bibliographies suggest related research. The structure of the book enjoys close parallels in other social sciences. The organization of the book reflects the editors' definitions and structuring of political geography. Part I Heritage includes works that have contributed to the theoretical development of the field. Part II Structure comprises the concern to which political geographers have devoted most of their past attention. Parts III and IV Process and Behavior form the subject where much future theoretical and practical effort is needed. Part V Environment provides the context in which spatial structure process and behavior occur. The Structure of Political Geography includes selections from sociobiology history international relations political economy political science social psychology and sociology. The classics in the field are an essential inclusion since the book would be incomplete without them. The selections in the volume originally published in 1971 remain useful and pertinent to political geographers of diverse persuasion and to social scientists interested in geographical approaches. The fact that there is a clear focus and conceptual interdependence in political geography is the volume's greatest contribution.

The Regulation of Air Transport From Protection to Liberalisation and Back Again

The Regulation of Air Transport From Protection to Liberalisation and Back Again

The regulation of modern civil aviation can be traced back to the later years of the Second World War. An intense debate about the future regulatory regime resulted in a compromise which to this day essentially dictates the structure of the global airline industry. Further progress towards ‘normalising’ the industry appears to be slowing down and perhaps even going into reverse. Without an understanding of the development of regulation it is not possible to understand fully the industry’s current problems and how they might be resolved. Many books have been written about the development of international air transport covering deregulation privatisation the emergence of new business models among other things but few if any have taken a broad view of the trends which have determined the industry’s current structure. The Regulation of Air Transport charts the development of aviation from the end of the Second World War to the present day following the key trends and disruptive forces. It provides an overview of what has determined the industry’s current structure the problems still facing the industry and the ways in which it could develop in the future. This wide-ranging study is important reading for both professionals and academics within the aviation field as well as anyone interested in the broader development of economic regulation. | The Regulation of Air Transport From Protection to Liberalisation and Back Again

Structure for Architects A Case Study in Steel Wood and Reinforced Concrete Design

Structure for Architects A Case Study in Steel Wood and Reinforced Concrete Design

Structure for Architects: A Case Study in Steel Wood and Reinforced Concrete Design is a sequel to the authors’ first text Structure for Architects: A Primer emphasizing the conceptual understanding of structural design in simple language and terms. This book focuses on structural principles applied to the design of typical structural members—a beam a girder and a column—in a diagrammatic frame building. Through the application of a single Case Study across three key materials the book illustrates the theory principles and process of structural design. The Case Study progresses step-by-step for each material from determining tributary areas and loads through a member's selection and design. The book addresses the frequent disparity between the way architects and engineers perceive and process information with engineers focusing on technical aspects and architects focusing on visual concepts. Structure for Architects: A Case Study in Steel Wood and Reinforced Concrete Design presents readers with an understanding of fundamental engineering principles through a uniquely thematic Case Study. Focusing on the conceptual understanding of structural design this book will be of interest to architecture students and professionals looking to understand the application of structural principles in relation to steel wood and concrete design. | Structure for Architects A Case Study in Steel Wood and Reinforced Concrete Design

Capital Structure Equity Ownership and Corporate Performance Evidence from Indian Manufacturing Firms

Capital Structure Equity Ownership and Corporate Performance Evidence from Indian Manufacturing Firms

This book provides empirical insights into the relationship between capital and equity-ownership structure of Indian manufacturing companies and their financial performance. It discusses and analyses the basic theories and concepts associated with capital structure debt financing levered and unlevered firms the various forms of ownership agency problem and its kind and the exploitation of minority owners by the large and largest owners. The study employs a set of the most reliable and suitable econometric estimation techniques to draw meaningful inferences on the Indian manufacturing sector. The novelty of this book lies in three particular aspects: the depth and dimension with which the topic is addressed; the robust empirical evidence that it has produced and the simple and intelligible approach with which it is authored. It communicates the crucial relevance of corporate capital structure and equity-ownership to the moderation of agency relationship and shaping the internal governance mechanism which ultimately results in increased or decreased operational efficiency and financial performance. It will enable readers to understand whether an increased amount of debt capital would bring about positive results for firms or create an extra burden on the management of their finances preventing them from taking productive investment decisions due to the threat of liquidation. The book will find an audience among advanced students scholars and researchers who are interested in understanding the corporate finance practices and governance mechanism of Indian organizations. | Capital Structure Equity Ownership and Corporate Performance Evidence from Indian Manufacturing Firms

Science and the Structure of Ethics

Science and the Structure of Ethics

Initially prepared as part of the Foundations of the Unity of Science volumes under the auspices of the International Encyclopedia of Unified Science Science and the Structure of Ethics soon took on a life of its own. Well positioned in the naturalistic tradition of ethical theory extending from John Dewey at the start and Richard Rorty at the conclusion of the century Abraham Edel's volume offers a remarkable synthesis of the ways hi which ethical statements can be examined and the nature of ethical concerns. Edel reveals a singular capacity to move beyond oracular controversies of the good and the right hi favor of a comparative analytic and functional account of how ethical perspectives and practices affect the content of moral discourse. In Edel's work the structure of ethical behavior is defined by biological psychological social and historical functions. Hence a scientific account of ethics is possible since moral norms are themselves products of an experiential field open to verification procedures common to all other walks of human life. In reviewing the impact of Edel's work hi general and this volume in particular Irving Louis Horowitz notes that Edel's naturalistic emphasis fits neatly with a view of ethics as something grounded in human experience rather than mandated from divine assumption: It is hard for me to imagine a turning back from the hard lessons of the century any more in ethical theory than in empirical research as such. We owe a central place in our century's intellectual capital to Edel's examination of ethical doctrines in the light of changing circumstances. This is a work certain to enlist the interest of ethicists sociologists of knowledge as well as those concerned with issues hi the philosophy of science and religion alike.
