Ilex x Nellie R.Stevens (Holly) - Standard Pleached

Ilex x Nellie R.Stevens (Holly) - Standard Pleached

The Ilex x Nellie R.Stevens is a holly plant that is a cross between English holly ilex aquifolium and Chinese holly ilex cornuta. The plant itself with its beautiful glossy green leaves and red berries has always been traditionally seen in Europe and America as Christmas holly and used in some European countries to ward off evil spirits by hanging them above the doorway. The flowering period is April where it usually starts to blossom its small white flowers and during the Autumn-Winter period, the actual berries themselves start to form. It is a bushy plant with a fast growth speed. It does not requiring maintenance but a quick trim in the summer could help if the leaves get a bit too long. The hardiness of this plant at H6 is perfect for the British climate and only during the extreme cold do you need to shelter it. Be careful of pests and potentially the holly leaf disease with this plant. Be careful not to eat the berries, no matter how inviting they may seem, as they could cause potentially a minor stomach upset if ingested. Tilia x Europaea Pallida (Common Lime) - Standard Pleached

Tilia x Europaea Pallida (Common Lime) - Standard Pleached

Tilia ’Pallida’ is a fast growing, deciduous tree which establishes quickly. Tilia europaea is a hybrid which occurs naturally from parent plants Tilia Cordata (Small-Leaved Lime) and Tilia Platyphyllos (Large-Leaved Lime). Popular for its uniform pyramidal habit, it thrives in a wide range of conditions and tolerates urban environments. The summer flowers are sweetly scented and borne in clusters. The fruit which follows is a nut like drupe, about the same size as a garden pea. The lush green foliage has a greenish yellow underside, slightly hairy and with tufts of brown hair in the leaf axils. In autumn, the foliage turns a rich, buttery yellow. It's tolerance of pruning makes it a very adaptable for pollarding or training if needed, often used for pleached or box head trees. Liquidambar Styraciflua (Sweet Gum Tree) - Standard Pleached

Liquidambar Styraciflua (Sweet Gum Tree) - Standard Pleached

This plant’s genus name Liquidambar was first given by Linnaeus in 1753 from liquidus, fluid, and the Arabic ambar, amber, in allusion to the fragrant terebinthine juice or gum which exudes from the tree. Its specific epithet styraciflua is an old generic name meaning “flowing with storax” (a plant resin). The name “storax” has long been confusingly applied to the aromatic gum or resin of this species, that of L. orientalis of Turkey, and to the resin better known as benzoin from various tropical trees in the genus Styrax. The sweetgum has a Nahuatl name, Ocotzocuahuitl, which translates to tree that gives pine resin from ocotl (pine), tzotl (resin), cuahuitl (tree), which refers to the use of the tree’s resin. The common name “sweet gum” refers to the species’ “sweetish gum”, contrasting with the black gum (Nyssa sylvatica), only distantly related, with which the sweet gum overlaps broadly in range. The species is also known as the “red gum”, for its reddish bark. Generally trouble free when it comes to pests and diseases. The plant itself flowers throughout most of the year with a multitude of colours depending on the season. Beautiful pink, purple, red, variegated and white in the Autumn is the best time for this plant although the summer months can produce a nice variety as well. With a H6 rating, this plant is perfect for the British climate. These styles of Japanese White Pine Bonsai Trees are well-developed, but you’ll still have a few decades to enjoy their beauty before they reach maturity at around age 60. Originally from the mountains of Japan, they are resilient to the British climate, and should only be protected during periods of extreme of hot and cold. They will look stunning in any open space and create regular interest as they continue their irregular growth habit. Additionally, their cones sometimes stay on the branches for many years and their flower buds and needle clumps have a very pleasant aroma. Our Premium Bonsai Plants have been specially sculpted to form distinctive shapes. This growth-training is a process that can take over 30 years to create trees of this size.
