Costume Quest is a humorous adventure role-playing game, fully inspired by the tradition of American Halloween. The production is the work of the Double Fine team, known for creating such titles as Psychonauts or Brutal Legend.
The game is kept in the crazy style traditional for Double Fine. The action takes place on Halloween night and includes places such as single-family housing estates, a dilapidated amusement park or a local hypermarket. A little boy travels these locations in search of his missing sister and it is him that the player plays. The whole story begins with an innocent journey in which the siblings walked from house to house carrying out an action called "treat or trick". The little sister was dressed as a candy, which unfortunately confused a certain monster famous for its sweetness. He kidnapped the girl and our shoulders are naturally obliged to save her.
During the expedition, we are accompanied by a team of up to four companions, each of whom has different abilities based on the costumes worn. For example, a knight can use a shield made of the lid of a garbage can to cover the rest of the group. While visiting the game world, we come across various items of equipment, allowing us to adjust the team to our style of play. Of course, it also cannot do without fighting. During them, the characters transform into creatures for which they were disguised (for example, a boy wearing a few cardboard boxes turns into a giant Mech). There is also a development system, traditional for the RPG genre, based on experience points.
In addition, the game has a strong adventure thread and in order to achieve success, we are forced not only to defeat various monsters, but also to outsmart other kids. One of the available missions concerns the so-called Patriots' parties. In order to take part in it, it is necessary to appear in the appropriate costume, which forces us to find the items needed to dress up as the lady known from the Statue of Liberty. For this purpose, we can use a sheet as a toga, or a broom as a torch. Performing such tasks rewards goodies and most often gives us a new clue about where our sister is being held.
