Beautiful Desolation is an adventure game developed by the independent studio The Brotherhood Games. As was the case with the band's previous work, the warmly received Stasis, this title was made possible thanks to a successful Kickstarter fundraiser.
The story told in Beautiful Desolation begins in 1980, when a mysterious monolith appeared in the sky. A construction of foreign origin, dubbed Penrose by humans, has been thoroughly researched by scientists, and the technology gathered on it has been subjected to so-called reverse engineering. Thanks to this, mankind has made an unimaginable civilization leap. Though initially the terrestrial population seemed united in the face of the remarkable discovery, over time they remembered their old disagreements, which soon led to the outbreak of a global conflict.
Many years have passed since these tragic events. The player goes to post-apocalyptic Africa and takes control of two heroes. The first is Dr. Mark Leslie, and the second is Pooch - a four-legged reconnaissance unit, the development of which was possible mainly thanks to the use of technology from Penrose. The overriding task of the machine is to collect data on the places it visits and the organisms it meets, and its purely scientific and logical approach to many issues often irritates Marek, which is why he gives vent to dialogues with a solid dose of humor. An important figure is also the scientist's brother - Major Sergeant Don Leslie, a former Marine and a veteran of the Vietnam War.
In Beautiful Desolation, the action is presented in isometric projection. The gameplay scheme is based on several pillars, the first of which is exploration. The world, developed in collaboration with Brian Fargo, is an original mix of semi-arid landscapes and post-apocalyptic cities and settlements. The land is inhabited not only by various groups using the technology developed years ago, but also local tribes whose culture is modeled on the rituals and customs characteristic of the indigenous people of Africa. Moreover, representatives of mutated fauna stand in the way of the heroes. Animals can be friendly or, on the contrary, pose a real threat to the protagonists. Despite this, no combat mechanics have been implemented in the game.
In addition, an important element of the game is solving puzzles, based primarily on the manipulation of objects found during the game. Due to the fact that their level of difficulty varies, players are forced to look for various clues, the source of which can be both conversations with encountered NPCs and careful observation of the surrounding elements. In the course of the game we use equipment - extremely advanced technology, the way of operation of which can resemble magic, coexists here with retro-futuristic devices, developed in the style of the 1980s.
