The Last Romantic Life of Max Eastman

Max Weber A Biography

Max Weber A Biography

A founder of contemporary social science Max Weber was born in Germany in 1864. At his death 56 years later he was nationally known for his scholarly and political writings but it was the international reception of his oeuvre over the last forty years that has made him world-famous. The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism The Economic Ethics of the World Religions and his magnum opus Economy and Society with its treatment of the relations of economics politics law and religion belong to the great achievements of 20th-century social science. The groundwork for the posthumous Weber reception was laid by Weber's widow Marianne a well-known feminist writer who followed up her edition of his collected works with one of the greatest biographies in a generation that produced many important accounts of itself. Although unavailable in English until a decade ago the importance of Marianne Weber's 1926 work had been widely understood. Sociologist Robert A. Nisbet called it a moving and deeply felt biographical memoir. Historian Gerhard Masur cited the book as the foundation of all further inquiries into Max Weber's life and influence. Beginning with Max's ancestry and early years Marianne Weber guides us through his life as student young lawyer scholar and political writer quoting liberally from his voluminous correspondence. Her account of his nervous breakdown after 1897 which curtailed his academic career but ultimately strengthened his creative energies provides deep insight into some of the personal tensions that troubled him to the end. In addition to her perceptive personal and intellectual life before the First World War describing many scholars social reformers politicians and literary figures within and beyond the famous Heidelberg circle of the Webers. The new introduction by Guenther Roth situates Marianne Weber's own role in the contemporary setting and discusses the current state of Weber research and of the international Weber reception. | Max Weber A Biography

Allied Air Attacks and Civilian Harm in Italy 1940–1945 Bombing among Friends

Allied Air Attacks and Civilian Harm in Italy 1940–1945 Bombing among Friends

Tens of thousands of Italian civilians perished in the Allied bombing raids of World War II. More of them died after the Armistice of September 1943 than before when the air attacks were intended to induce Italy’s surrender. Allied Air Attacks and Civilian Harm in Italy 1940–1945 addresses this seeming paradox by examining the views of Allied political and military leaders Allied air crews and Italians on the ground. It tells the stories of a little-known diplomat (Myron Charles Taylor) military strategist (Solly Zuckerman) resistance fighter (Aldo Quaranta) and peace activist (Vera Brittain) – architects and opponents of the bombing strategies. It describes the fate of ordinary civilians drawing on a wealth of local and digital archival sources memoir accounts novels and films including Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 and John Huston’s The Battle of San Pietro. The book will be of interest to readers concerned about the ethical legal and human dimensions of bombing and its effects on civilians to students of military strategy and Italian history and to World War II buffs. They will benefit from a people-focused history that draws on a range of eclectic and rarely used sources in English and Italian. The Frankfurt School The Critical Theories of Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno

The Frankfurt School The Critical Theories of Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno

The Frankfurt School refers to a school of neo-Marxist interdisciplinary social theory particular established at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Frankfurt Germany in 1923. Tarr's investigation focuses on three key issues. The first is the Frankfurt School's original program of providing a general theory of modern capitalist society. The second is the claim to represent a continuation of the original Marxian theory through the school's Critical Theory. The third is the scientific validity of Critical Theory in light of the generally accepted canons of the natural and social sciences. Tarr proposes that in the last analysis Critical Theory is simply another existentialist philosophy. As such it is a specific expression of certain socio-historical conditions and of the situation of a particular social group the marginal Jewish bourgeois intelligentsia of Central Europe. This European-Jewish contribution became apparent after the great metaphysical impulse of the pre-Socratic and Platonic-Aristotelian philosophies had run their respective courses. Both philosophies represented philosophical schools of ethics and both wanted to help man take up a defense against the storms of passions and fate. It was from these ancient sources that the Frankfurt School emerged. The Frankfurt School derived its impetus in the twentieth century in which Tarr claims a shift occurred from the ontological to the subjective realm. This in turn led to deep changes in philosophical theory and practice which led to a more psychologically oriented mode of social thought. This in-depth study covers the entire career of the Frankfurt School's Critical Theory from 1923 to 1974. It does so by applying the same standards of criticism to its primary doctrines as it turned on other theories but with a keen sense of balance and fairness. | The Frankfurt School The Critical Theories of Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Phenomenological Ontology of Breathing The Respiratory Primacy of Being

Phenomenological Ontology of Breathing The Respiratory Primacy of Being

This book studies the phenomenological ontology of breathing. It investigates breathing and air as a question of phenomenological philosophy and looks at phenomenological questions concerning respiratory methodology ontological experience of respiration respiratory spirituality and respiratory embodiment. Drawing on the ideas of Maurice Merleau-Ponty Gaston Bachelard Martin Heidegger Edmund Husserl Luce Irigaray and David Kleinberg-Levin the book argues for the ontological primacy of breathing and develops a new principle of philosophy that the author calls “Silence of Breath Abyss/Yawn of Air”. It asserts that breathing is not a thing- or person-oriented relation but perpetual communication with the immense elemental atmosphere of open and free air. This new phenomenological method of breathing offers readers a chance to begin to wonder rethink re-experience and reimagine all questions of life in an innovative and creative way as aerial and respiratory questions of life. Part of the Routledge Critical Perspectives on Breath and Breathing series the book breaks new ground in phenomenology and phenomenological ontology by offering a decisive and insightful treatment of breath. It will be indispensable for students and researchers of philosophy phenomenology and ontology. It will also be of special interest to Merleau-Ponty scholars as it investigates uncharted dimensions of Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy. | Phenomenological Ontology of Breathing The Respiratory Primacy of Being

Global Governance of Civil Aviation Safety

Global Governance of Civil Aviation Safety

This book indicates the shortcomings of the current international legal system and customary international norms that govern international aviation law to comply with contemporary air transport market realities. As the air transport market develops globally the safety regime of civil aviation should also be governed and applied globally. In this book the author departs from current international legal norms to examine the emerging legal field of global administrative law. Through that lens the possibility of reconstructing the set of legal mechanisms that govern domestic and international administrative interaction in the global field of aviation safety is explored. This book demonstrates that a legal system is never complete but always develops in tandem with changing needs i. e. the participation of the affected parties. Exploring the principles of GAL theory contributes to addressing the contemporary legal issues relating to state compliance with international aviation safety standards that would otherwise not be covered by customary international law. In particular the principles of GAL theory regarding global governance and the ‘public’ character of global regulations the role of individuals and states in global governance and state sovereignty are considered valuable contributions to contemporary global aviation safety issues in practice. It is asserted in this book that proper checks and balances in global aviation safety can be improved by making these accessible to individuals by way of national courts. Finally establishing public awareness of global aviation safety standards will eventually create greater pressure on states to implement and enforce them. This book is in an area increasing academic and research interest of practitioners of public international aviation law global administrative law global governance and global aviation safety global air transport market regulations. | Global Governance of Civil Aviation Safety
