A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom Volume 2 From Creation to the Victory of Scientific and Literary Methods

Given the powerful and forthright title of Andrew Dickson White's classic study it is best to make clear his own sense of the whole as given in the original 1896 edition: My conviction is that science though it has evidently conquered dogmatic theology based on biblical texts and ancient modes of thought will go hand in hand with religion and that although theological control will continue to diminish religion as seen in the recognition of a 'power in the universe not ourselves which makes for righteousness' and in the love of God and of our neighbor will steadily grow stronger and stronger not only in the American institutions of learning but in the world at large. White began to assemble his magnum opus a two volume work first published in 1896 as A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom. In correspondence he wrote that he intended the work to stake out a position between such religious orthodoxy as John Henry Newman's on one side and such secular scoffing as Robert Ingersoll's on the other. Historian Paul Carter declared that this book did as much as any other published work toward routing orthodoxy in the name of science. Insofar as science and religion came to be widely viewed as enemies with science holding the moral high ground White inadvertently became one of the most effective and influential advocates for unbelief. | A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom Volume 2 From Creation to the Victory of Scientific and Literary Methods

Mobile Microspies Particles for Sensing and Communication

Mobile Microspies Particles for Sensing and Communication

On the one hand particle-based sensing techniques are driven by new technologies for preparing and measuring micro- and nanoparticles and by a fascination of the possibilities for design and functionalization of all specificities in structure shapes and behavior of these tiny objects. On the other hand there evolves a fast-growing need for new sensing and communication paths for medicine biotechnology and analytical science as well as for new and efficient information transfer and storage systems. No longer are particles regarded only as special types of materials. However we have a better understanding of how they are bridging the gap between material and system between structure and function. Although there are numerous books on micro- and nanoparticles and on sensors there is to the best of my knowledge no book focusing on the general concept of particles as mobile microtransducers. This book clarifies that signal-transducing particles should be regarded as functional elements as part of a system not simply as special materials. It introduces concepts of bead-base sensing and mobile spies at the micro- and nanoscale and gives a representative overview of the variety of particle-based sensing. The state of the art in the development of particles as mobile spies for communication and information management allows us to speculate about future particle-based components and systems in a completely sustainable world economy. In addition the book reports on a fast-evolving technical field which is a typical example of the required convergence of technical strategies and mechanisms in living nature and would make a great reference for professionals and students of chemistry biochemistry biology pharmacy medicine agriculture mechatronics informatics materials science and systems engineering. | Mobile Microspies Particles for Sensing and Communication

Child Protection A guide for teachers and child care professionals

Child Protection A guide for teachers and child care professionals

'. a valuable resource book for teachers child care workers and school administrators on preventing identifying and handling cases of child abuse and neglect. [It includes] a unique international perspective on child protection. ' Associate Professor Sandy K Wurtele University of Colorado'Many books stop at the what should be done but this book goes beyond that to tell us the how. It is sound practical and most welcomed. 'Wilma Bartlett The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children UKTeachers and early childhood workers are the only professionals in contact with abused children for long periods of time. Although they are seldom aware of their importance they can provide the child's best defence against abuse. Abused children exhibit identifiable behaviours and perform less well in school than their peers. Educators and caregivers can learn to observe children's development and respond to their special needs. Schools have always taken responsibility for teaching children to stay safe from traffic fire water and electricity. They are also in the best position for teaching children to stay safe with people. Child Protection is a comprehensive guide to the common forms of child abuse and neglect. It offers practical help for the identification of child abuse and neglect and the support of the child victims and in particular the provision of curriculum for child protection. Freda Briggs formerly a teacher and social worker is Professor Child Development at the University of South Australia. She is also the author of From Victim To Offender Why My Child? Counselling for Toads A Psychological Adventure

Counselling for Toads A Psychological Adventure

'Toad' the famous character in Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows is in a very depressed state and his good friends Rat Mole and Badger are 'worried that he might do something silly'. First they nursed him. Then they encouraged him. Then they told him to pull himself together. Finally Badger could stand it no longer. That admirable animal though long on exhortation was short on patience. 'Now look here Toad this can go on no longer' he said sternly. 'There is only one thing left. You must have counselling!'Robert de Board's engaging account of Toad's experience of counselling will capture the imagination of the growing readership of people who are interested in counselling and the counselling process. Written as a real continuation of life on the River Bank Toad and his friends come to life all over again. Heron the counsellor uses the language and ideas of transactional analysis as his counselling method. The Other Victorians A Study of Sexuality and Pornography in Mid-nineteenth-century England

The Other Victorians A Study of Sexuality and Pornography in Mid-nineteenth-century England

Taking as his point of departure the authors the audience and the texts of Victorian writings on sex in general and of Victorian pornography in particular Steven Marcus offers a startling and revolutionary perspective on the underside of Victorian culture. The subjects dealt with in The Other Victorians are not only those to have been shocking in the Victorian period. The way these subjects were regarded-and the way our notions of the Victorians continue to change as the efforts of contemporary scholarship restore them to their full historical dimensions-are matters today of some surprise and wonder. Making use for the first time of the extensive collection of Victoriana at the Kinsey Institute for Sex Research Marcus first examines the writings of Dr. William Acton who may be said to represent the official views of sexuality held by Victorian society and of Henry Spencer Ashbee the first and most important bibliographer-scholar of pornography. He then turns to the most significant work of its kind from the period the eleven-volume anonymous autobiography My Secret Life. There follows an analysis of four pornographic Victorian novels-an analysis that throws an oblique but fascinating light on the classics of Victorian literature-and a review of the odd flood of Victorian publications devoted to flagellation. The book concludes with a chapter propounding a general theory of pornography as a sociological phenomenon. With the publication of The Other Victorians understanding of this period took a giant stride forward. Most of the writers and writings discussed by Marcus belong to Victorian sub-literature rather than to literature proper; in this way the work remains connected to a consideration of the exotic sub-literature. A brilliantly written book in its own right this work transformed the study of the Victorian period as did no other. | The Other Victorians A Study of Sexuality and Pornography in Mid-nineteenth-century England

Promoting Statistical Practice and Collaboration in Developing Countries

Promoting Statistical Practice and Collaboration in Developing Countries

Rarely but just often enough to rebuild hope something happens to confound my pessimism about the recent unprecedented happenings in the world. This book is the most recent instance and I think that all its readers will join me in rejoicing at the good it seeks to do. It is an example of the kind of international comity and collaboration that we could and should undertake to solve various societal problems. This book is a beautiful example of the power of the possible. [It] provides a blueprint for how the LISA 2020 model can be replicated in other fields. Civil engineers or accountants or nurses or any other profession could follow this outline to share expertise and build capacity and promote progress in other countries. It also contains some tutorials for statistical literacy across several fields. The details would change of course but ideas are durable and the generalizations seem pretty straightforward. This book shows every other profession where and how to stand in order to move the world. I urge every researcher to get a copy! —David Banks from the Foreword Promoting Statistical Practice and Collaboration in Developing Countries provides new insights into the current issues and opportunities in international statistics education statistical consulting and collaboration particularly in developing countries around the world. Understanding Optics with Python

Understanding Optics with Python

Optics is an enabling science that forms a basis for our technological civilization. Courses in optics are a required part of the engineering or physics undergraduate curriculum in many universities worldwide. The aim of Understanding Optics with Python is twofold: first to describe certain basic ideas of classical physical and geometric optics; second to introduce the reader to computer simulations of physical phenomena. The text is aimed more broadly for those who wish to use numerical/computational modeling as an educational tool that promotes interactive teaching (and learning). In addition it offers an alternative to developing countries where the necessary equipment to carry out the appropriate experiments is not available as a result of financial constraints. This approach contributes to a better diffusion of knowledge about optics. The examples given in this book are comparable to those found in standard textbooks on optics and are suitable for self-study. This text enables the user to study and understand optics using hands-on simulations with Python. Python is our programming language of choice because of its open-source availability extensive functionality and an enormous online support. Essentials of programming in Python 3. x including graphical user interface are also provided. The codes in the book are available for download on the book’s website. Discusses most standard topics of traditional physical and geometrical optics through Python and PyQt5 Provides visualizations and in-depth descriptions of Python’s programming language and simulations Includes simulated laboratories where students are provided a hands-on exploration of Python software Coding and programming featured within the text are available for download on the book’s corresponding website. Understanding Optics with Python by Vasudevan Lakshminarayanan Hassen Ghalila Ahmed Ammar and L. Srinivasa Varadharajan is born around a nice idea: using simulations to provide the students with a powerful tool to understand and master optical phenomena. The choice of the Python language is perfectly matched with the overall goal of the book as the Python language provides a completely free and easy-to-learn platform with huge cross-platform compatibility where the reader of the book can conduct his or her own numerical experiments to learn faster and better. — Costantino De Angelis University of Brescia Italy Teaching an important programming language like Python through concrete examples from optics is a natural and in my view very effective approach. I believe that this book will be used by students and appreciated greatly by instructors. The topic of modelling optical effects and systems where the students should already have a physical background provides great motivation for students to learn the basics of a powerful programming language without the intimidation factor that often goes with a formal computer science course. — John Dudley FEMTO-ST Institute Besançon France
