The bioeconomy and non-timber forest products

The bioeconomy and non-timber forest products

This book provides the first in-depth investigation of how non-timber forest products are an integral part of local national and global bioeconomies. While the plants and fungi that produce non-timber forest products are essential to the sustainability of forest ecosystems peoples' food and livelihood security and sovereignty and thus the bioeconomy are often absent from bioeconomic strategies. Presenting a selection of empirical cases from around the world that engage with the bioeconomy and non-timber forest products this volume reveals how essential these products are to creating a greener and more sustainable future how to to better integrate them into efforts to transition to and expand the bioeconomy and how such efforts can be supported and developed. Chapters analyse how and to what degree non-timber forest products promote sustainable resource use generate employment and contribute to food and livelihood security and poverty alleviation. The volume develops approaches and identifies interventions and policies to support the integration of non-timber forest products into bioeconomy strategies including in national reporting schemes to provide recommendations for future research and practical implementation. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of forest and natural resource management bioeconomics circular economy and ecological economics more widely. It will also be of interest to professionals working in sustainable development and the forestry sector.

Advanced Non-Thermal Power Generation Systems

Advanced Non-Thermal Power Generation Systems

Generally sources for power generation are broken down into two categories: thermal and non-thermal. Thermal sources for power generation include combustion geothermal solar nuclear and waste heat which essentially provide heat as a means for power generation. This book examines non-thermal (mechanical electrochemical nanoscale self-powered and hybrid) sources of power generation and emphasizes recent advances in distributed power generation systems. Key Features Details recent advances made in wind power including onshore offshore fixed and floating platform and air wind energy systems and offers detailed assessments of progress Covers advances in generation of hydropower exploring dam hydropower novel wave energy converters and novel systems and turbines for hydrokinetic energy conversion to power Examines all types of fuel cells and their multi-functional roles along with hybrid fuel cell systems in complete detail Explores advances in the development of self-powered nanogenerators for use in portable wearable and implantable power electronics Focuses on technologies with the best commercial possibilities and provides perspectives on future challenges that need to be solved This book will be of value to all researchers in academia industry and government interested in pursuing power generation technologies and seeking a comprehensive understanding of available and emerging non-thermal power generation sources. Readers who are interested in learning about thermal power generation sources can find it in the author’s companion text Advanced Power Generation Systems: Thermal Sources (2023). | Advanced Non-Thermal Power Generation Systems

Non-State Actors and Sustainable Development in Brazil The Diffusion of the 2030 Agenda

Non-State Actors and Sustainable Development in Brazil The Diffusion of the 2030 Agenda

This book investigates how non-state actors have become key drivers of the diffusion of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Brazil. The UN ranks Brazil as the most biodiverse country in the world but the country’s environment has never been under greater threat with the rise of multiple crises bringing mounting challenges to socioeconomic development and environmental protection. As state support has fallen away non-state actors have actively engaged and eventually mobilized other social actors towards the promotion of the SDGs and the implementation of the UN agenda. This book asks why it is that non-state actors have dedicated so much time effort and resources to promote a non-binding agenda that was ratified by and is mainly assigned to state actors. Looking at the roles of academia civil society and the private sector the book explores the different ways in which these social actors make sense of and translate the 2030 Agenda into practice within their respective local contexts. Drawing on extensive fieldwork this book sheds light on a series of challenges opportunities and contradictions within the global agenda and its implementation. Assessing what the Brazil case can teach us about the diffusion of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs more broadly this book will be of interest to academics in the field of Sustainable Development Latin America Studies and Environmental Politics as well as sustainable development researchers and policy makers. | Non-State Actors and Sustainable Development in Brazil The Diffusion of the 2030 Agenda

Feedstock-based Bioethanol Fuels. I. Non-Waste Feedstocks Starch Sugar Grass Wood Cellulose Algae and Biosyngas-based Bioethanol Fuels

This book aims to inform readers about the recent developments in production evaluation and utilization of bioethanol fuels from non-waste feedstocks. It covers the production of bioethanol fuels from first generation starch feedstocks and sugar feedstocks grass biomass wood biomass cellulose biosyngas and third generation algae. In this context there are nine key sections where the first four chapters cover the production of bioethanol fuels from feedstocks at large and non-waste feedstocks. This book shows that pretreatments and hydrolysis of the non-waste feedstocks fermentation of hydrolysates and separation and distillation of bioethanol fuels are the fundamental processes for bioethanol fuel production from these non-waste feedstocks with the exception of the biosyngas feedstocks. This book is a valuable resource for the stakeholders primarily in the research fields of energy and fuels chemical engineering environmental science and engineering biotechnology microbiology chemistry physics mechanical engineering agricultural sciences food science and engineering materials science biochemistry genetics molecular biology plant sciences water resources economics business and management transportation science and technology ecology public environmental and occupational health social sciences toxicology multidisciplinary sciences and humanities among others | Feedstock-based Bioethanol Fuels.
