Evolution of the British Party System 1885-1940

Parliamentary Committees in a Party-Centred Context Looking Behind the Scenes

Political Islam and Democracy in Central Asia The Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan

Political Islam and Democracy in Central Asia The Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan

Political Islam and Democracy in Central Asia is a study of moderation of political Islam in Central Asia. It analyses the only Islamic political party that was ever allowed to participate in elections in Central Asia and contributes to the debate on the radicalization or moderation of Islamic political parties. The book examines the Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan (IRPT) which has been the only legal Islamic party in post-Soviet Central Asia until 2015 and has been recognized by many observers as moderate. Studying the ideological change of the party which happened after its inclusion into political process the book identifies their moderation as either tactical or ideological. The author examines and describes the main factors that led the IRPT toward moderation with a focus on the inclusion-moderation hypothesis which concludes that inclusion can lead to moderation. Based on extensive analytical data the author provides reasons for the moderation of the Tajik Islamists. It also challenges the ideological moderation of the Tajik Islamists by examining their attitudes toward the conventions of the modern democratic political system. Providing a detailed analysis of moderate Islamism and its controversial challenges for the modern world this book will be of interest to researchers in the fields of Political Science electoral politics Islamic studies and Area Studies with particular reference to Central Asia. | Political Islam and Democracy in Central Asia The Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan

Tunisia and Egypt after the Arab Spring Party Politics in Transitions from Authoritarian Rule

Tunisia and Egypt after the Arab Spring Party Politics in Transitions from Authoritarian Rule

This book examines the processes of transition from authoritarian rule in Tunisia and Egypt between 2011 and 2014 arguing that differences between the two countries can be explained by the conduct of their respective political parties. Drawing on a new conceptualization of political parties’ agency that considers their unique nature as intermediate and intermediary institutions the book allows for the identification of those factors driving political parties’ choices in processes of transition. Moreover thanks to the employment of quantitative text analysis on the electoral manifestos of the parties involved this work presents new data for the study of party systems in Tunisia and Egypt. Presenting a new toolkit for analysis Tunisia and Egypt after the Arab Spring ultimately reveals how differing legacies of authoritarian repression across the two countries can help explain why the Tunisian transition culminated with the 2014 democratic constitution and the Egyptian transition with the 2013 military coup. Conceptually the book will appeal to those working in comparative politics and those interested in processes of democratization and authoritarian resilience. Nonetheless the focus on Tunisia and Egypt makes the book suitable reading for anyone interested in Arab politics and the MENA region generally. | Tunisia and Egypt after the Arab Spring Party Politics in Transitions from Authoritarian Rule

Constitutional Law and the Politics of Ethnic Accommodation Institutional Design in Afghanistan

Constitutional Law and the Politics of Ethnic Accommodation Institutional Design in Afghanistan

This book explores whether the legal and political institutions of Afghanistan were able to incorporate diverse ethnic groups into the political process. Ethnic accommodation has gained central stage in the literature on institutional design and democratic consolidation. However some divided societies are more explored than others and Afghanistan is one understudied country that is critically important for testing and improving our theories of institutional design in a democratizing plural society. This work examines the Constitution of 2004 and those provisions of electoral laws and political party laws that together devised Afghan political institutions including those of the presidential system unitary government electoral systems as well as the party system. It argues that due to their incongruence in design and effects the Afghan political institutions failed to fully accommodate ethnic groups in the political process. This book adopts a holistic approach while also paying careful attention to the details of each of the individual pieces of political institutions designed by the Constitution of 2004. Taken together this approach yields insights into the boundaries and interactions of institutional design and how their interactions hinder or advance ethnic accommodation in varying contexts. The book will be essential reading for academics researchers and policy makers interested in constitutional law and politics. | Constitutional Law and the Politics of Ethnic Accommodation Institutional Design in Afghanistan

The Roots of American Communism

The Roots of American Communism

In this definitive history of the evolution of the Com- munist Party in America-from its early background through its founding in 1919 to its emergence as a legal entity in the 1920s-Theodore Draper traces the native and foreign strains that comprised the party. He emphasizes its shifting policies and secrets as well as its open activities. He makes clear how the party in its infancy was transformed from a new expression of American radicalism to the American appendage of a Russian revolutionary power a fact that Draper develops in his succeeding volume American Communism and Soviet Russia. In his special prescient way Theodore Draper himself had the final words on American Communism: It is like a museum of radical politics. In its various stages it has virtually been all things to all men. There are many ways of trying to understand such a movement but the first task is historical. In some respects there is no other way to understand it or at least to avoid seriously misunderstanding it. Every other approach tends to be static one-sided or unbalanced. Draper correctly notes that the formative period of the American Communist movement has remained a largely untold and even unknown story. In part the reasons for this are that the Communist movement although a child of the West grew to power in the Soviet East. But Draper rescues this chapter with deep appreciation for the fact that communism was not something that happened just in Russia but also in the United States. This is a must read for scholars and laypersons alike. This volume is conceived as an independent and self-contained study of the American Communist movement. Draper correctly notes that the formative period is largely untold and even unknown. In part the reasons for this are that the Communist movement although a child of the West grew to power in the Soviet East. Draper appreciates the fact that communism was not something that happened only in Russia but also took place in the United States. That experience is the focus of this volume. | The Roots of American Communism
