Dialogic Pedagogy Discourse in Contexts from Pre-school to University

Dialogic Pedagogy Discourse in Contexts from Pre-school to University

Taking a dialogic approach this edited book engages in analysis and description of dialogic discourse in a number of different educational contexts from early childhood to tertiary with an international team of contributors from Australia Finland New Zealand and the United Kingdom. The chapters focus mostly on dialogic face-to-face discourse with some examples of online interactions and feature insights from educational linguistics particularly the work of Michael Halliday. While the contributors come from a range of theoretical backgrounds they all share an interest in language in use and engage in close analysis of transcripts of naturally-occurring interaction. Taking inspiration from Alexander and other theorists they employ a fine-grained and analytic approach to the exploration of their data. The authors make use of the linguistic tools and models of language in society in order to examine the turn-by-turn unfolding of the interaction. The authors relate their insights from disparate forms of linguistic analysis to elements of Alexander’s (2020) dialogic framework situating the discourse in its contexts and discussing the pedagogical implications of the linguistic choices at play. In presenting this work from a range of situations and perspectives the authors strive to demonstrate how dialogic discourse plays out in educational contexts across the world. The book aims to foster further research in this direction and to inspire educators to explore dialogic discourse for themselves. It will be of interest to a wide audience including literacy researchers linguists teachers and teacher educators as well as graduate students. | Dialogic Pedagogy Discourse in Contexts from Pre-school to University

Being an Early Childhood Educator Bringing theory and practice together

Being an Early Childhood Educator Bringing theory and practice together

Making the transition from pre-service teacher to professional can be challenging. From field experience placements or 'pracs' to the early years in the classroom this text provides a comprehensive and practical guide to help every early childhood student develop their professional expertise and confidence. The authors prompt students to bring together theories learned at university with ways of working with real children in real settings framed by the principles of recognising equity and diversity. There is clear guidance on how to be successful 'on prac' including understanding the many roles pre-service teachers will be expected to take on and the important relationships they need to build. Lesson planning understanding curriculum documents and fail-safe strategies for teaching in a wide range of situations and with children from wide-ranging backgrounds are all covered in depth. Suggestions for tutorial activities and further reading accompany each chapter prompting students to engage in critical reflection and self-evaluation while the 'On track on prac' feature will help pre-service teachers monitor and review their progress. Readers are also provided with insights from 'real world' pre-service students and professional teachers who have mentored many different students on prac. This is an essential text for all students undertaking practicums and preparing for the first years of their professional careers. | Being an Early Childhood Educator Bringing theory and practice together

Moral and Political Values in Teacher Education over Time International Perspectives

This collection brings together international teacher educators to employ a ‘long view’ of an historic and values-based dialectic in teacher education. The authors reflect how employing historical consciousness to look back can offer greater continuity to teachers’ moral and political values within their training. The book draws on research from experienced teacher educators representing different historical social and political contexts in North America Europe Asia as well in post-conflict South Africa. Within each section the authors reflect on the development of the moral and political values of pre-service and in-service teachers in an era of global neo-liberalism and how this is inextricably bound up with the narratives of professionals in the past within their own national context. Each chapter takes a ‘long view’ of the role of historical consciousness in informing the moral and political values of pre-service and in-service teachers providing examples of how international teacher educators can collectively support one another in restoring a vibrant values-based dialectic within the processes pedagogies and provision of university and school-based training for which they are responsible. The ‘long view’ approach offers a compelling argument for the need to connect pre-service and in-service teachers’ values and narrative to the legacy of professionals of the past. Moral and Political Values in Teacher Education over Time will be of great interest to researchers academics and students in teacher education comparative education and the history of education. It will also be of interest to international university and school-based teacher educators and policymakers in the field. | Moral and Political Values in Teacher Education over Time International Perspectives
