D. H. Lawrence Ecofeminism and Nature

D. H. Lawrence Ecofeminism and Nature

Shortlisted for the ASLE-UKI Prize for Best Academic Monograph This is the first ecocritical book on the works of D. H. Lawrence and also the first to consider the links between nature and gender in the poetry and the novels. In his search for a balanced relationship between male and female characters what role does nature play in the challenges Lawrence offers his readers? How far are the anxieties of his characters in negotiating relationships that might threaten their sense of self derived from the same source as their anxieties about engaging with the Other in nature? Indeed might Lawrence’s metaphors drawn from nature actually be the causes of human actions in The Rainbow for example? The originality of Lawrence’s poetic and narrative strategies for challenging social attitudes towards both nature and gender can be revealed by new approaches offered by ecocritical theory and ecofeminist readings of his books. This book explores ecocritical notions to frame its ecofeminist readings from the difference between the ‘Other’ and ‘otherness’ in The White Peacock and Lady Chatterley’s Lover ‘anotherness’ in the poetry of Birds Beasts and Flowers psychogeography in Sea and Sardinia emergent ecofeminism in Sons and Lovers land and gender in The Boy in the Bush gender dialogics in Kangaroo human animality in Women in Love trees as tests in Aaron’s Rod to ‘radical animism’ in The Plumed Serpent. Finally three late tales provide a reassessment of ecofeminist insights into Lawrence’s work for readers in the present context of the Anthropocene. | D. H. Lawrence Ecofeminism and Nature

Process and Pattern in Culture Essays in Honor of Julian H. Steward

Process and Pattern in Culture Essays in Honor of Julian H. Steward

This festschrift commemorates Julian H. Steward. The essays were contributed by former students colleagues and other anthropologists whose research or thinking has been influenced by him. There was no preconceived attempt to give the volume any greater sense of unity or to impose upon the contributors any restrictions as to subject matter. On the contrary each author was urged to write on an anthropological topic of greatest current interest to himself. Many of the essays could be placed just as handily within a division other than the one to which they have arbitrarily been assigned in the book. This kind of interchangeability may reflect in some measure the interrelatedness of Steward's contributions to anthropological theory. The broad relevance of all the selections to Steward's work could reflect also the extent to which his interests continue to be reflected in the work of anthropologists influenced by him. It could also reflect a parallelism of theoretical concerns within the profession that stem from the cultural ambience that produced Steward himself. Parallelisms and convergence are aspects of the kind of cultural determinism which has claimed Steward's attention during the many years that he fought a fairly lonely battle to establish the respectability of evolutionism in anthropology. Now that respectability has been achieved-with an almost bandwagon fervor-it is clear that Steward as much as anyone else in anthropology was responsible for the change. The essays in this collection are at once a vindication of his patience an evidence of the high status he enjoys among anthropologists and a testimony to the impact of his unusual creativity on his colleagues. | Process and Pattern in Culture Essays in Honor of Julian H. The Arctic Journal of Captain Henry Wemyss Feilden R. A. The Naturalist in H. M. S. Alert 1875-1876

The Arctic Journal of Captain Henry Wemyss Feilden R. A. The Naturalist in H. M. S. Alert 1875-1876

The British Arctic Expedition of 1875–6 was the first major British naval expedition to the high Arctic where science was almost as important as geographical exploration. There were hopes that the expedition might find the hypothetical open polar sea and with it the longed-for Northwest Passage and it did reach the highest northern latitude to date. The Royal Society compiled instructions for the expedition and selected two full-time naturalists (an unusual naval concession to science) of whom one Henry Wemyss Feilden proved a worthy choice. Feilden was a soldier who fought in most of the wars in his lifetime including the American Civil War on the Confederate side. On board HMS Alert he kept a daily journal a record important for its scientific content but also as a view of the expedition as seen by a soldier revealing admiration and appreciation for his naval colleagues; he performed whatever tasks were given to him including the rescue of returning sledge parties stricken by scurvy. He also did a remarkably comprehensive job in mapping the geology of Smith Sound; some of his work on the Cape Rawson Beds was the most reliable until the 1950s. He was an all-round naturalist and a particularly fine geologist and ornithologist. He was not just a collector; he pondered the significance of his findings within the context of the best modern science of his day: in zoology Charles Darwin on evolution; in botany Hooker on phytogeography and in geology Charles Lyell’s system. He illustrated his journal with his own sketches and also enclosed the printed programmes of popular entertainments held on the ship and verses for birthdays and sledging (there was a printing press onboard). The journal gives a vigorous impression of a ship’s company well occupied through the winter then increasingly active in sledging and geographical discovery in spring before the scurvy-induced decision to head home in the summer of 1876. After his return Feilden had dealings with many scientists and their institutions finding homes for and meaning in his collections. | The Arctic Journal of Captain Henry Wemyss Feilden R. A. Studies in Indo-Muslim History by S.H. Hodivala Volume I A Critical Commentary on Elliot and Dowson’s History of India as Told by Its Own Hi

In the field of medieval Indian historiography an eight-volume magnum opus History of India as Told by Its Own Historians by Sir Henry Myers Elliot (1808-53) and the editor-compiler of his posthumous papers John Dowson (1820-81) was published from London between 1867 and 1877. These landmark volumes continue to retain their popularity even nearly hundred and fifty years later and scholars still learn from and conduct their research on the basis of this work. However an enterprise of this scale and magnitude was bound to suffer from some serious shortcomings. An eminent Indian scholar S. H. Hodivala undertook the daunting task of annotating Elliot and Dowson’s volumes and worked through all the new material selecting or criticizing and adding his own suggestions where previous comments did not exist or appeared unsuitable. The first volume of Hodivala’s annotated Studies was published in 1939 while the second was published posthumously in 1957. Over the years while the work of Elliot and Dowson has seen many reprints and is even available online now Hodivala’s volumes have receded into obscurity. A new edition is presented here for the first time. Hodivala also published critical commentaries on 238 of about 2000 entries included in another very famous work Hobson-Jobson (London 1886) by Sir Henry Yule (1820-89) and Arthur Coke Burnell (1840-82). These have also been included in the present edition. These volumes are thus aimed at serving as an indispensable compendium of both Elliot and Dowson’s and for Yule and Burnell’s excellent contributions of colonial scholarship. At the same time these would also serve as a guide for comparative studies and critical appreciation of historical texts. The Ontology of Physics for Biology Semantic Modeling of Multiscale Multidomain Physiological Systems

The Ontology of Physics for Biology Semantic Modeling of Multiscale Multidomain Physiological Systems

This book introduces semantic representations of multiscale multidomain physiological systems that link to qualitative reasoning and to quantitative analysis of biophysical processes in health and disease. Two major public health problems diabetes and hypertension serve as use-cases to illustrate the depth and rigor of such representations for logical inference and quantitative analysis. Central to this approach is the Ontology of Physics for Biology (OPB) that formally represents the foundations of classical physics and engineering system dynamics that are the basis for our understanding of biomedical entities processes and functional relationships. Furthermore we introduce OPB-based software for annotating and abstracting available biosimulation models for reuse recombination and for archiving of physics-based biomedical knowledge. We have formalized and leveraged physics-based biological knowledge as a working view of physiology and biophysics from three distinct perspectives: (1) biologists and biomedical investigators (2) biophysicists and bioengineers and (3) biomedical ontologists and informaticists. We present a logical and intuitive semantics of classical physics as a tool for mediating and translating biophysical knowledge among biomedical domains. Daniel L. Cook MD PhD John H. Versatile Video Coding

Versatile Video Coding

Video is the main driver of bandwidth use accounting for over 80 per cent of consumer Internet traffic. Video compression is a critical component of many of the available multimedia applications it is necessary for storage or transmission of digital video over today's band-limited networks. The majority of this video is coded using international standards developed in collaboration with ITU-T Study Group and MPEG. The MPEG family of video coding standards begun on the early 1990s with MPEG-1 developed for video and audio storage on CD-ROMs with support for progressive video. MPEG-2 was standardized in 1995 for applications of video on DVD standard and high definition television with support for interlaced and progressive video. MPEG-4 part 2 also known as MPEG-2 video was standardized in 1999 for applications of low- bit rate multimedia on mobile platforms and the Internet with the support of object-based or content based coding by modeling the scene as background and foreground. Since MPEG-1 the main video coding standards were based on the so-called macroblocks. However research groups continued the work beyond the traditional video coding architectures and found that macroblocks could limit the performance of the compression when using high-resolution video. Therefore in 2013 the high efficiency video coding (HEVC) also known and H. 265 was released with a structure similar to H. 264/AVC but using coding units with more flexible partitions than the traditional macroblocks. HEVC has greater flexibility in prediction modes and transform block sizes also it has a more sophisticated interpolation and de blocking filters. In 2006 the VC-1 was released. VC-1 is a video codec implemented by Microsoft and the Microsoft Windows Media Video (VMW) 9 and standardized by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE). In 2017 the Joint Video Experts Team (JVET) released a call for proposals for a new video coding standard initially called Beyond the HEVC Future Video Coding (FVC) or known as Versatile Video Coding (VVC). VVC is being built on top of HEVC for application on Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) High Dynamic Range (HDR) and 360° Video. The VVC is planned to be finalized by 2020. This book presents the new VVC and updates on the HEVC. The book discusses the advances in lossless coding and covers the topic of screen content coding. Technical topics discussed include: Beyond the High Efficiency Video CodingHigh Efficiency Video Coding encoderScreen contentLossless and visually lossless coding algorithmsFast coding algorithmsVisual quality assessmentOther screen content coding algorithmsOverview of JPEG Series

Psychology and Politics

Psychology and Politics

In applying psychology to the field of politics the eminent British anthropologist and psychologist W. H. R. Rivers deals with social or collective psychology rather than with the psychology of the individual. This choice presents a number of problems. These include the relation between individual and collective psychology the concept of a collective or group mind and the question of how far society can be regarded as an organism. The choice also presents the need to explain the fact that when a number of individuals act together the product of their combined activity is not the same as what might have emerged from the separate activity of individuals. Rivers' belief in the political process prompted him to deliver the lectures on psychological theory that are printed in this volume. Three other addresses are also included in this volume one on socialism and human nature another on education and mental hygiene and a lecture on the aims of ethnography. Rivers considered the relation between psychology and sociology putting forward the position that the formulation of an adequate science of social psychology lies in the observation of social conduct including not merely the social conduct of everyday life but still those forms of it which are subsumed under the headings of religion economics and politics as well as the social institution of language. The social behavior of mankind is capable of being studied as a methodological principle independently of the psychological basis of behavior. | Psychology and Politics

The Science of Life Andrew Huxley Richard Keynes and Horace Barlow

The Science of Life Andrew Huxley Richard Keynes and Horace Barlow

The Science of Life: Andrew Huxley Richard Keynes and Horace Barlow is part of the series Creative Lives and Works. It is a collection of interviews conducted by one of England’s leading social anthropologists and historians Professor Alan Macfarlane. Filmed over a period of 40 years the three conversations in this volume are part of a larger set of interviews that cut across various disciplines—from the social sciences the sciences to the performing and visual arts. The current volume on two of England’s foremost physiologists and a vision scientist is yet another addition to the series of several such books. These Cambridge men of science Sir Andrew Huxley Richard Keynes and Horace Barlow apart from shaping certain very fundamental and critical elements in the disciplines of Physiology and Neuroscience also belong to illustrious lineages. Sir Andrew Huxley for instance is a direct descendant of T. H. Huxley while Richard Keynes and Horace Barlow are both the great grandsons of Charles Darwin. Their conversations greatly expand our understanding of physiology and neuroscience. The book will be of very great value not just to those interested in Physiology Medicine and Neuroscience. The interviews also take us into a fascinating period of Cambridge Science dominated by certain key families of distinguished thinkers.
