The Gender Pay Gap and Social Partnership in Europe Findings from Close the Deal Fill the Gap

The Gender Pay Gap and Social Partnership in Europe Findings from Close the Deal Fill the Gap

The gender pay gap (GPG) exists in every European country but it varies considerably even in EU member states covered by the same legal principles on pay equality. Part of the variation can be explained by different patterns of social partnership. With current policy pressure to de-centralise collective bargaining and increase the percentage of pay linked to productivity what role can social partnership play in tackling the GPG? Reporting on the findings of the European Commission funded research project Close the Deal Fill the Gap this book uses an interdisciplinary analysis involving legal economic and sociological expertise to explore the role of social partnership in GPG in Italy Poland and the UK. Selected on the basis of their contrasting profiles in terms of legal regulation industrial relations systems of collective bargaining coverage of collective agreements and differing rates of the GPG the in-depth study provides important insights into the main issues underlying the problem of reducing the gender pay gap which have led to guidelines in the negotiation of arrangements on GPG-related issues. Based on a unique comparative interdisciplinary and action-oriented esearch project it will be of great interest to all researchers and advanced students with an interest in women’s representation in the workforce and the gender pay gap as well as practitioners and policy makers in organisations such as trade unions and employers’ associations. | The Gender Pay Gap and Social Partnership in Europe Findings from Close the Deal Fill the Gap

Creating the Path to Success in the Classroom Teaching to Close the Graduation Gap for Minority First-Generation and Academically Unprepar

This is a book for all faculty who are concerned with promoting the persistence of all students whom they teach. Most recognize that faculty play a major role in student retention and success because they typically have more direct contact with students than others on campus. However little attention has been paid to role of the faculty in this specific mission or to the corresponding characteristics of teaching teacher-student interactions and connection to student affairs activities that lead to students’ long-term engagement to their academic success and ultimately to graduation. At a time when the numbers of underrepresented students – working adults minority first-generation low-income and international students – is increasing this book a companion to her earlier Teaching Underprepared Students addresses that lack of specific guidance by providing faculty with additional evidence-based instructional practices geared toward reaching all the students in their classrooms including those from groups that traditionally have been the least successful while maintaining high standards and expectations. Recognizing that there are no easy answers Kathleen Gabriel offers faculty ideas that can be incorporated in or modified to align with faculty’s existing teaching methods. She covers topics such as creating a positive and inclusive course climate fostering a community of learners increasing engagement and students’ interactions activating connections with culturally relevant material reinforcing self-efficacy with growth mindset and mental toughness techniques improving lectures by building in meaningful educational activities designing reading and writing assignments for stimulating deep learning and critical thinking and making grade and assessment choices that can promote learning. | Creating the Path to Success in the Classroom Teaching to Close the Graduation Gap for Minority First-Generation and Academically Unprepar

The Relevance of Regions in a Globalized World Bridging the Social Sciences-Humanities Gap

This volume provides a unique open inter-disciplinary dialogue across the Humanities and Social Sciences to further our understanding of the phenomenon of regions and regionalism in a globalized world both at the theoretical and empirical levels. Mind the Gap Global Learning at Home and Abroad

Mind the Gap Global Learning at Home and Abroad

There is growing awareness that global learning is not confined to university credit-bearing off campus international programs and that institutions of higher learning have up until now conceived of global education too narrowly. Global learning through study abroad and off-campus domestic study fits into a larger context of students’ educational experiences. You can find global learning as part of other high-impact practices; domestic off-campus programs undergraduate research and service- or community-based learning all can be global learning opportunities. On-campus global learning can occur in the disciplines and in the core curriculum as well. Language and culture anthropology sociology and other departments multicultural centers and diversity and inclusivity offices to name a few also teach students to be global learners. Global learning pertains to the many staff and faculty educators who intentionally encourage students to engage with and successfully navigate difference. Thus there is a growing need for bridging across disciplinary and administrative silos silos that are culturally bound within academia. The gaps between these silos matter as students seek to integrate off- and on-campus learning. Higher education needs a new holistic assessment of global learning. This book investigates not just student learning but also faculty experiences program structures and pathways that impact global learning and expands the context of global learning to show its antecedents and impacts as a part of the larger higher education experience. Chapters look at recent developments such as short-term off-campus international study and certificate/medallion programs as well as blended learning environments and undergraduate research all in the context of multi-institutional comparisons. Global learning is also situated in a larger university context. A Series on Engaged Learning and Teaching Book.
