The Emperor Theophilos and the East 829–842 Court and Frontier in Byzantium during the Last Phase of Iconoclasm

Modern historiography has become accustomed to portraying the emperor Theophilos of Byzantium (829-842) in a favourable light taking at face value the legendary account that makes of him a righteous and learned ruler and excusing as ill fortune his apparent military failures against the Muslims. The present book considers events of the period that are crucial to our understanding of the reign and argues for a more balanced assessment of it. The focus lies on the impact of Oriental politics on the reign of Theophilos the last iconoclast emperor. After introductory chapters setting out the context in which he came to power separate sections are devoted to the influence of Armenians at the court the enrolment of Persian rebels against the caliphate in the Byzantine army the continuous warfare with the Arabs and the cultural exchange with Baghdad the Khazar problem and the attitude of the Christian Melkites towards the iconoclast emperor. The final chapter reassesses the image of the emperor as a good ruler building on the conclusions of the previous sections. The book reinterprets major events of the period and their chronology and sets in a new light the role played by figures like Thomas the Slav Manuel the Armenian or the Persian Theophobos whose identity is established from a better understanding of the sources. | The Emperor Theophilos and the East 829–842 Court and Frontier in Byzantium during the Last Phase of Iconoclasm

Basic Cinematography A Creative Guide to Visual Storytelling

Basic Cinematography A Creative Guide to Visual Storytelling

The cinematographer must translate the ideas and emotions contained in a script into something that can be physically seen and felt onscreen helping the director to fulfil the vision of the film. By making physical the ideas and emotions of the story the cinematographer supports blocking as a visual form of the story through these tools. Rather than delve into technical training Basic Cinematography helps to train the eye and heart of cinematographers as visual storytellers providing them with a strong foundation for their work so that they’re ready with creative ideas and choices on set in order to make compelling images that support the story. The book includes tools tables and worksheets on how to enhance students and experienced filmmakers with strong visual storytelling possibilities including such features as: Dramatic script analysis that will help unlock blocking composition and lighting ideas that reveal the visual story Ten tools of composition Psychological impact of lenses shot sizes and camera movement Six elements of lighting for visual storytelling What to look for beneath the hood of cameras including using camera log RAW and LUTs Dramatic analysis chart and scene composition chart to help plan your shoots Case studies from such visually cinematic shows and documentaries as Netflix’s Godless Jessica Jones The Crown and Chef’s Table as well as examples from classroom exercises Features insights from the DP of Jessica Jones Manuel Billeter and the DP of Chef’s Table Adam Bricker. | Basic Cinematography A Creative Guide to Visual Storytelling

Pedro Páez's History of Ethiopia 1622 / Volume II

Pedro Páez's History of Ethiopia 1622 / Volume II

This book in two volumes contains an annotated English translation of the História da Ethiópia by the Spanish Jesuit missionary priest Pedro Páez (Pêro Pais in Portuguese) 1564-1622 who worked in the Portuguese padroado missions first in India and then in Ethiopia long thought to be the kingdom of the legendary Prester John. His history of Ethiopia was written in Portuguese in the last ten years of his life and survives in only two manuscripts. The translation by Christopher J. Tribe is based on the new critical edition of the Portuguese text by Isabel Boavida Hervé Pennec and Manuel João Ramos which was published in Lisbon in 2008. They are also the editors of this English version. The History of Ethiopia is an essential source for several areas of study - from the history of the Catholic missions in that country and the relations between the European religious orders to the history of art and religions; from the history of geographical exploration to the ideological contextualization of the Ethiopian kingdom; from material culture to Abyssinian political and territorial administration; and from an analysis of local circumstances to changes in human ecology in the Horn of Africa and the Indian Ocean. It is a repository of empirical knowledge on the political geography religion customs flora and fauna of Ethiopia. It combines travel narrative with a historico-ethnographic monograph and is a chronicle of the activities of Jesuit missionaries in their Ethiopian mission. It also reworks a wide variety of documents including the first translations into a European language of a number of Ethiopian literary texts from royal chronicles to hagiographies. It complements other early accounts of Ethiopia by Ludovico de Varthema Francisco Alvares Castanhoso Bermudez Arnold von Harff Manoel de Almeida Bahrey Alessandro Zorzi Jerónimo Lobo and Václav Prutky all published by The Hakluyt Society. | Pedro Páez's History of Ethiopia 1622 / Volume II
