Don't be Fooled A Philosophy of Common Sense

Don't be Fooled A Philosophy of Common Sense

In the debate leading up to the EU referendum in the United Kingdom the British politician Michael Gove declared that people in this country have had enough of experts. In the 2016 Presidential campaign in the United States Donald Trump waged a war against the very idea of expertise. Yet if you are worried about your child's behaviour don't know which laptop to buy or just want to get fit the answer is easy: ask an expert. Where do we draw the line? Why do we appear to know more and more collectively yet less and less individually? Has expertise painted itself into a corner? Can we defend both science and common sense? In this engaging and much-needed book Jan Bransen explores these important questions and more. He argues that the rise of behavioural sciences has caused a sea change in the relationship between science and common sense. He shows how - as recently as the 1960s - common sense and science were allies in the battle against ignorance but that since then populism and chauvinism have claimed common sense as their own. Bransen argues that common sense is a collection of interrelated skills that draw on both an automatic pilot and an investigative attitude where we ask ourselves the right questions. It is the very attitude of open-minded inquiry and questioning that Bransen believes we are at risk of losing in the face of an army of experts. Drawing on fascinating examples such as language and communication money the imaginary world of Endoxa domestic violence and quality of life Don't be Fooled: A Philosophy of Common Sense is a brilliant and wry defence of a skill that is a vital part of being human. | Don't be Fooled A Philosophy of Common Sense

The Nordic Economic Social and Political Model Challenges in the 21st Century

The Nordic Economic Social and Political Model Challenges in the 21st Century

The Nordic Model is the 20th-century Scandinavian recipe for combining stable democracies individual freedom economic growth and comprehensive systems for social security. But what happens when Sweden and Finland – two countries topping global indexes for competitiveness productivity growth quality of life prosperity and equality – start doubting themselves and their future? Is the Nordic Model at a crossroads? Historically consensus continuity social cohesion and broad social trust have been hailed as key components for the success and for the self-images of Sweden and Finland. In the contemporary however political debates in both countries are increasingly focused on risks threats and worry. Social disintegration political polarization geopolitical anxieties and threat of terrorism are often dominant themes. This book focuses on what appears to be a paradox: countries with low income differences high faith in social institutions and relatively high cultural homogeneity becoming fixated on the fear of polarization disintegration and diminished social trust. Unpacking the presentist discourse of worry and a sense of interregnum at the face of geopolitical tensions digitalization and globalization as well as challenges to democracy the chapters take steps back in time and explore the current conjecture through the eyes of historians and social scientists addressing key aspects of and challenges to both the contemporary and future Nordic Model. In addition the functioning and efficacy of the participatory democracy and current protocols of decision-making are debated. This work is essential reading for students and scholars of the welfare state social reforms and populism as well as Nordic and Scandinavian studies. Nordic Whiteness and Migration to the USA A Historical Exploration of Identity

This volume explores the complex and contradictory ways in which the cultural scientific and political myth of whiteness has influenced identities self-perceptions and the process of integration of Nordic immigrants into multicultural and racially segregated American society in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In deploying central insights from whiteness studies postcolonial feminist and intersectionality theories it shows that Nordic immigrants - Danes Swedes Finns Norwegians and Sámi - contributed to and challenged American racism and white identity. A diverse group of immigrants they could proclaim themselves ‘hyper-white’ and ‘better citizens than anybody else’ including Anglo-Saxons thus taking for granted the racial bias of American citizenship and ownership rights yet there were also various unexpected intersections of whiteness with ethnicity regional belonging gender sexuality and political views. ‘Nordic whiteness’ then was not a monolithic notion in the USA and could be challenged by other identities which could even turn white Nordic immigrants into marginalised figures. A fascinating study of whiteness and identity among white migrants in the USA Nordic Whiteness will appeal to scholars of sociology history and anthropology with interests in Scandinavian studies migration and diaspora studies and American studies. | Nordic Whiteness and Migration to the USA A Historical Exploration of Identity

Neoliberalism Nordic Welfare States and Social Work Current and Future Challenges

Neoliberalism Nordic Welfare States and Social Work Current and Future Challenges

How have three decades of neoliberalism affected the Nordic welfare states as well as the organisation education and practices of social work in those countries? During recent decades the welfare states of Denmark Finland Norway and Sweden have gone through dramatic changes infl uenced by the political triumph of neoliberalism. This has led to both the electoral success of extreme right and mainstream neoliberal parties and to the neoliberal ideological transformations of social democratic parties. The neoliberal doctrine of making governance cheaper has thus been made the focus of governance and has led to increased marginalisation and social problems. This is the first book to comparatively explore the role of neoliberal reforms on social work and social policy across the Nordic welfare states. The richly theoretical and empirical chapters explore and illustrate the consequences of the dominance of neoliberal policies and provide an analysis of the effects of globalisation glocalisation welfare nationalism symbolic violence and forced migration. The book provides valuable insights into the shortcomings of retreating welfare states in a time of increasing glocal social problems. Neoliberalism Nordic Welfare States and Social Work should be considered essential reading for critical social work education. The Impact of a Sense of Belonging in College Implications for Student Persistence Retention and Success

The Impact of a Sense of Belonging in College Implications for Student Persistence Retention and Success

Sense of belonging refers to the extent a student feels included accepted valued and supported on their campus. The developmental process of belonging is interwoven with the social identity development of diverse college students. Moreover belonging is influenced by the campus environment relationships and involvement opportunities as well as a need to master the student role and achieve academic success. Although the construct of sense of belonging is complex and multilayered a consistent theme across the chapters in this book is that the relationship between sense of belonging and intersectionality of identity cannot be ignored and must be integrated into any approach to fostering belonging. Over the last 10 years colleges and universities have started grappling with the notion that their approaches to maintaining and increasing student retention persistence and graduation rates were no longer working. As focus shifted to uncovering barriers to student success while concurrently recognizing student success as more than solely academic factors the term “student sense of belonging” gained traction in both academic and co-curricular settings. The editors noticed the lack of a consistent definition or an overarching theoretical approach as well as a struggle to connect disparate research. A compendium of research applications and approaches to sense of belonging did not exist so they brought this book into being to serve as a single point of reference in an emerging and promising field of study. | The Impact of a Sense of Belonging in College Implications for Student Persistence Retention and Success
