Accessing the Clinical Genius of Winnicott A Careful Rendering of Winnicott’s Twelve Most Influential Clinical papers

Accessing the Clinical Genius of Winnicott A Careful Rendering of Winnicott’s Twelve Most Influential Clinical papers

Donald Winnicott psychoanalyst and pediatrician is viewed by many in the psychodynamic field as the “other genius” in the history of psychodynamic theory and practice along with Freud. This book selects and explores twelve of his most infl uential clinical papers. Winnicott’s works have been highly valued in the decades since they were first published and are still relevant today. Winnicott’s writings on the goals and techniques of psychodynamic psychotherapy have been foundational in that he recast Freudian- and Kleinian-infl uenced thinking in the direction of the more relational schools of psychotherapy that define current 21st-century psychodynamic practice. Winnicott’s writings help us to understand the maturational processes of children certainly. But more than that they help us to understand how best to intervene when the enterprise of childhood leads to compromises of psychological health in later years. Yet despite Winnicott’s influence and continuing relevance his writings while at some level simple are elusive to modern readers. For one thing he writes in the psychoanalytic genre of the 1930s-1960s whose underlying theoretical assumptions and vocabulary are obscure in the present day and for another his writing often reflects primary process thinking which is suggestive but not declarative. In this work Teri Quatman provides explanations and insight in an interlocution with Winnicott’s most significant papers exploring both his language and concepts and enabling the clinician to emerge with a deep and reflective understanding of his thoughts perspectives and techniques. Engaging and accessible Accessing the Clinical Genius of Winnicott will be of great use to anyone encountering Winnicott for the first time particularly in psychodynamic psychotherapeutic training and in the teaching of relational psychotherapies. | Accessing the Clinical Genius of Winnicott A Careful Rendering of Winnicott’s Twelve Most Influential Clinical papers

Conceptual Landscapes Fundamentals in the Beginning Design Process

Conceptual Landscapes Fundamentals in the Beginning Design Process

Conceptual Landscapes explores the dilemma faced in the early moments of design thinking through a gradient of work in landscape and environmental design media by both emerging and well-established designers and educators of landscape architecture. It questions where and more importantly how the process of design starts. The book deconstructs the steps of conceptualizing design in order to reignite pedagogical discussions about timing and design fundamentals and to reveal how the spark of an idea happens – from a range of unique perspectives. Through a careful arrangement of visual essays that integrate analog digital and mixed-media works and processes the book highlights differences between diverse techniques and triggers debate between design representation technology and creative culture in the field. Taken together the book’s visual investigation of the conceptual design process serves as a learning tool for aspiring designers and seasoned professionals alike. By situating student work alongside that of experienced teachers and landscape architects the book also demystifies outdated notions of individual genius and sheds new light on the nearly universally messy process of discovery bridged across years and diverse creative vocabularies in the conceptual design process. Lavishly illustrated with over 210 full color images this book is a must-read for students and instructors in landscape architecture. | Conceptual Landscapes Fundamentals in the Beginning Design Process

The Choice

The Choice

Eli Goldratt is known by millions of readers worldwide as a scientist educator and business guru. His Theory of Constraints (TOC) is taught at business schools and MBA programs around the globe. Government agencies and businesses large and small have adopted his methodologies. TOC has been successfully applied in almost every area of human endeavor from industry to healthcare to education. And while Eli Goldratt is indeed a scientist an educator and a business leader he is first and foremost a philosopher; some say a genius. He is a thinker who provokes others to do the same. In The Choice Goldratt once again presents his thought-provoking approach this time through a conversation with his daughter Efrat as they discuss his fundamental system of beliefs. Through examples and discussions Eli Goldratt helps us understand holistically how the interrelation of emotions intuition and logic influences our ability to think clearly and problem solve when making personal and professional decisions. Can every conflict be removed? Is every situation exceedingly simple? (no matter how complex it initially looks) Can every situation be substantially improved? Is there always a win-win solution? Dr. Goldratt exhorts his readers to examine and reassess their lives and business practices by cultivating a different perspective and a clear new vision. This revised edition includes Efrat’s Notes – these notes and logical maps are helpful tools that assist in visualizing and implementing the thoughts and ideas expressed throughout this book.

A.C. Swinburne A Poet's Life

A.C. Swinburne A Poet's Life

Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909) was one of the literary sensations of the Victorian period. His iconoclastic poetry and prose challenged attitudes to sex politics religion and censorship. Not only writing some of the most original lyric poetry of the time and pioneering criticism Swinburne became a cultural icon. In the 1860s his very name was a symbol of progressive forces emerging in a repressive age. Readers across the world identified with the paganism and humanism of his poetry. Swinburne's was a turbulent life lived against a backdrop of beautiful settings in the Isle of Wight and Northumberland and shared with a host of Victorian luminaries or artists and writers such as D G Rossetti Elizabeth Siddal Burne-Jones Morris and Simeon Solomon. It is a life touched by early tragedy and romantic disappointment by extraordinary fame and abject loneliness by masochism and alcoholism but above all by an unquenchable vivacity. At the centre was the charmingly spoken excitable genius whom Burne-Jones described as 'quite the most poetic personality I have ever known. ' the artistic prodigy who seemed to have read almost everything who was as happy revelling in the sea as in literary discourse. Based on new research and many unpublished letters Rikky Rooksby sheds light on Swinburne's personality and relationships and discusses how Swinburne's poetry develops from early pessimism to a recovered joy in the energies of the natural world. This biography is a sympathetic and fresh account of one of the most colourful figures in English literature. | A. C. Swinburne A Poet's Life

Subjectivity and the Political Contemporary Perspectives

Subjectivity and the Political Contemporary Perspectives

Despite or quite possibly because of the structuralist post-structuralist and deconstructionist critiques of subjectivity master signifiers and political foundations contemporary philosophy has been marked by a resurgence in interest in questions of subjectivity and the political. Guided by the contention that different conceptions of the political are at least implicitly committed to specific conceptions of subjectivity while different conceptions of subjectivity have different political implications this collection brings together an international selection of scholars to explore these notions and their connection. Rather than privilege one approach or conception of the subjectivity-political relationship this volume emphasizes the nature and status of the and in the ‘subjectivity’ and ‘the political’ schema. By thinking from the place between subjectivity and the political it is able to explore this relationship from a multitude of perspectives directions and thinkers to show the heterogeneity openness and contested nature of it. While the contributions deal with different themes or thinkers the themes/thinkers are linked historically and/or conceptually thereby providing coherence to the volume. Thinkers addressed include Arendt Butler Levinas Agamben Derrida Kristeva Adorno Gramsci Mill Hegel and Heidegger while the subjectivity-political relation is engaged with through the mediation of the law-political ethics-politics theological-political inside-outside subject-person and individual-institution relationships as well as through concepts such as genius happiness abjection and ugliness. The original essays in this volume will be of interest to researchers in philosophy politics political theory critical theory cultural studies history of ideas psychology and sociology. | Subjectivity and the Political Contemporary Perspectives

Duns Scotus on Divine Love Texts and Commentary on Goodness and Freedom God and Humans

Duns Scotus on Divine Love Texts and Commentary on Goodness and Freedom God and Humans

The medieval philosopher and theologian John Duns Scotus (1266-1308) was one of the great thinkers of Western intellectual culture exerting a considerable influence over many centuries. He had a genius for original and subtle philosophical analysis with the motive behind his philosophical method being his faith. His texts are famous not only for their complexity but also for their brilliance their systematic precision and the profound faith revealed. The texts presented in this new commentary show that Scotus' thought is not moved by a love for the abstract or technical but that a high level of abstraction and technicality was needed for his precise conceptual analysis of Christian faith. Presenting a selection of nine fundamental theological texts of Duns Scotus some translated into English for the first time this book provides detailed commentary on each text to reveal Scotus' conception of divine goodness and the nature of the human response to that goodness. Following an introduction which includes an overview of Scotus' life and works the editors highlight Scotus' theological insights many of which are explored here for the first time and shed new light on topics which were and still are hotly discussed. Scotus is seen to be the first theologian in the history of Christian thought who succeeds in developing a consistent conceptual framework for the conviction that both God and human beings are essentially free. Offering unique insights into Scotus' theological writings and faith and a particular contribution to contemporary debate on Scotus' ethics this book contributes to a clearer understanding of the whole of Scotus' thought. | Duns Scotus on Divine Love Texts and Commentary on Goodness and Freedom God and Humans
