Fraud Investigation Case Studies of Crime Signal Detection

Fraud Investigation Case Studies of Crime Signal Detection

Investigating white-collar crime is like any other investigation concerned with past events. However a number of characteristics require a contingent approach to these investigations. This book describes the process of conducting private internal investigations by fraud examiners and presents a number of reports from the United States Sweden and Norway. It evaluates a number of internal investigation reports to reflect on the practice of fraud examinations. Empirical studies provide a basis to reflect theoretically on practice improvements for fraud examiners. Rather than presenting normative recommendations based on ideal or stereotype situations so often found in existing books this book develops guidelines based on empirical study of current practice. Internal investigations should uncover the truth about misconduct or crime without damaging the reputation of innocent employees. Typical elements of an inquiry include collection and examination of written and recorded evidence interviews with suspects and witnesses data in computer systems and network forensics. Internal inquiries may take many forms depending upon the nature of the conduct at issue and the scope of the investigation. There should be recognition at the outset of any investigation that certain materials prepared during the course of the investigation may eventually be subject to disclosure to law enforcement authorities or other third parties. The entire investigation should be conducted with an eye towards preparing a final report. As evidenced in this book private fraud examiners take on complicated roles in private internal investigations and often fail in their struggle to reconstruct the past in objective ways characterized by integrity and accountability. | Fraud Investigation Case Studies of Crime Signal Detection

Modulation Theory

Modulation Theory

In recent years a considerable amount of effort has been devoted both in industry and academia towards the design performance analysis and evaluation of modulation schemes to be used in wireless and optical networks towards the development of the next and future generations of mobile cellular communication systems. Modulation Theory is intended to serve as a complementary textbook for courses dealing with Modulation Theory or Communication Systems but also as a professional book for engineers who need to update their knowledge in the communications area. The modulation aspects presented in the book use modern concepts of stochastic processes such as autocorrelation and power spectrum density which are novel for undergraduate texts or professional books and provides a general approach for the theory with real life results applied to professional design. This text is suitable for the undergraduate as well as the initial graduate levels of Electrical Engineering courses and is useful for the professional who wants to review or get acquainted with the a modern exposition of the modulation theory. The books covers signal representations for most known waveforms Fourier analysis and presents an introduction to Fourier transform and signal spectrum including the concepts of convolution autocorrelation and power spectral density for deterministic signals. It introduces the concepts of probability random variables and stochastic processes including autocorrelation cross-correlation power spectral and cross-spectral densities for random signals and their applications to the analysis of linear systems. This chapter also includes the response of specific non-linear systems such as power amplifiers. The book presents amplitude modulation with random signals including analog and digital signals and discusses performance evaluation methods presents quadrature amplitude modulation using random signals. Several modulation schemes are discussed including SSB QAM ISB C-QUAM QPSK and MSK. Their autocorrelation and power spectrum densities are computed. A thorough discussion on angle modulation with random modulating signals along with frequency and phase modulation and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing is provided. Their power spectrum densities are computed using the Wiener-Khintchin theorem.

Early Childhood Pedagogies Creating Spaces for Young Children to Flourish

Early Childhood Pedagogies Creating Spaces for Young Children to Flourish

Diverse international perspectives on the ways in which young children’s learning and care may be supported converge in this book. Traversing the field of early childhood education and care from its established philosophical underpinnings to 21st century research policies and practices the contributions to this volume draw together past and present discourses as a basis for shaping future trajectories. In spite of a growing international consensus on the strong influence of early childhood experiences on lifetime outcomes the nineteen chapters reveal contemporary early childhood pedagogy as a collection of spaces characterised by plurality complexity and dissonance. These characteristics signal the importance of recognising early childhood pedagogies: multiple models of practice for the many diverse learning and care contexts that have the capacity to value young children as individuals and enable each to flourish now and throughout their lives. Moreover such characteristics disrupt notions that a single ‘optimal’ early childhood pedagogy is either possible or desirable. This exciting global collection of empirical research reports and discursive papers provides inspiration to spark new reflections fresh debates and innovative endeavours among early childhood students practitioners researchers and policymakers around the world. This book was originally published as a special issue of Early Child Development and Care. | Early Childhood Pedagogies Creating Spaces for Young Children to Flourish

Urban Political Ecology in the Anthropo-obscene Interruptions and Possibilities

Urban Political Ecology in the Anthropo-obscene Interruptions and Possibilities

Urban Political Ecology in the Anthropo-obscene: Interruptions and Possibilities centres on how to organize anew the articulation between emancipatory theory and political activism. Across its theoretical and empirical chapters written by leading scholars from anthropology geography urban studies and political science the book explores new political possibilities that are opening up in an age marked by proliferating contestations sharpening socio-ecological inequalities and planetary processes of urbanization and environmental change. A deepened conversation between urban environmental studies and political theory is mobilized to chart a radically new direction for the field of urban political ecology and cognate disciplines: What could emancipatory politics be about in our time? What does a return of the political under the aegis of equality and freedom signal today in theory and in practice? How do political movements emerge that could re-invent equality and freedom as actually existing socio-ecological practices? The hope is to contribute discussions that can expand and rearrange critical environmental studies to remain relevant in a time of deepening depoliticization and the rise of post-truth politics. Urban Political Ecology in the Anthropo-obscene will be of interest to postgraduates established scholars and upper level undergraduates from any discipline or field with an interest in the interface between the urban the environment and the political including: geography urban studies environmental studies and political science. | Urban Political Ecology in the Anthropo-obscene Interruptions and Possibilities

Modeling Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Modeling Sensorineural Hearing Loss

A recent study indicates that 20 million people in the United States have significant sensorineural hearing loss. Approximately 95% of those people have partial losses with varying degrees of residual hearing. These percentages are similar in other developed countries. What changes in the function of the cochlea or inner ear cause such losses? What does the world sound like to the 19 million people with residual hearing? How should we transform sounds to correct for the hearing loss and maximize restoration of normal hearing? Answers to such questions require detailed models of the way that sounds are processed by the nervous system both for listeners with normal hearing and for those with sensorineural hearing loss. This book contains chapters describing the work of 25 different research groups. A great deal of research in recent years has been aimed at obtaining a better physiological description of the altered processes that cause sensorineural hearing loss and a better understanding of transformations that occur in the perception of those sounds that are sufficiently intense that they can still be heard. Efforts to understand these changes in function have lead to a better understanding of normal function as well. This research has been based on rigorous mathematical models computer simulations of mechanical and physiological processes and signal processing simulations of the altered perceptual experience of listeners with sensorineural hearing loss. This book provides examples of all these approaches to modeling sensorineural hearing loss and a summary of the latest research in the field.

EDHF The Complete Story

EDHF The Complete Story

The advances made in vascular biology in the last 25 years have considerably changed the perception that one could have of the endothelial cells. Once considered as a diffusion barrier preventing the access of the blood cells to the vascular matrix the endothelium is now recognized as playing a major role in the control of blood fluidity platelet aggregation and vascular tone but also in immunology inflammation angiogenesis and for serving as a metabolizing and an endocrine organ. from the prefaceCardiovascular diseases so prevalent in the Western world during the twentieth century could well become the scourge of the twenty-first century in emerging countries as well as the West. Endothelial dysfunction linked to an imbalance in the synthesis and/or release of contracting and relaxing factors is often evoked to explain the initiation of the cardiovascular pathology or its development and perpetuation. Two decades ago when nitric oxide was demonstrated to mediate endothelium-dependent relaxations the vascular world seemed convinced that nitric oxide was the ultimate and sole explanation for such relaxations. However not everyone agreed. EDHF: The Complete Story is the work of two leading researchers who did not accept that simple conclusion but instead continued to search along with others for a deeper understanding of the ways in which endothelial cells communicate with the underlying smooth muscle to signal it to hyperpolarize. Now with most if not all of those ways uncovered the authors offer this summary as way of bringing closure to the quest. This monograph reports on the work of many researchers. It summarizes the significant recent discoveries concerning endothelium-dependent hyperpolarizations which are likely to play a much more important role in cardiovascular physiology and pathology than was originally foreseenExtensively illustrated with original diagrams and schematics that su | EDHF The Complete Story
