Restoration Stage Comedies and Hollywood Remarriage Films In conversation with Stanley Cavell

Stanley Cavell Literature and Film The Idea of America

Stanley Cavell Literature and Film The Idea of America

This is the first book to offer a thorough examination of the relationship that Stanley Cavell’s celebrated philosophical work has to the ways in which the United States has been imagined and articulated in its literature. Establishing the contours of Cavell’s most significant readings of American philosophical and cultural activity the volume explores how his philosophy and the kind of reading it demands have an important relation to broader considerations of the American national imaginary. Focused coherent and original essays from a wide range of philosophers and critics consider how his investigations of Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson for example represent a sustained engagement with the ways in which philosophy might provide us with new ways of thinking and of living. This is the first detailed and comprehensive treatment of America as a category of enquiry in Cavell’s writing engaging with the terms of Cavell’s various configurations of the nation and offering readings of American texts that illustrate the possibilities that Cavell’s work has in turn for literary and film criticism. This study of the role played by philosophy in the articulation of the American self-imaginary highlights the ways in which the reading of literature and the practice of philosophy are conjoined in the ethical and political project of national self-definition. | Stanley Cavell Literature and Film The Idea of America

Understanding Behaviour in Early Years Settings Supporting Personal Social and Emotional Development from 0–5

Everything we learn every way we influence others and every relationship we form hangs around a complex interplay of behaviours feelings and thoughts. This practical book explores the factors that influence children’s behaviour in the early years enabling practitioners parents and carers to develop a better understanding and become more intuitive and confident in supporting their development and learning in the first five years. Full of insights and strategies for supporting children when their behaviour gets in the way of learning and wellbeing or when it is simply ‘different’ in some way Understanding Behaviour in Early Years Settings demonstrates how practitioners can help children to feel secure learn and explore while gaining an understanding of how to behave socially and appropriately towards others. Areas covered include building firm foundations and developing attachments; personal social and emotional development; the language of feelings and behaviour; observing ‘problem’ behaviours and planning interventions; and supporting disability and special educational needs. Including case studies and thinking points in each chapter this invaluable guide will help early years practitioners teachers and students to develop their own knowledge confidence and understanding when working with challenging behaviours. | Understanding Behaviour in Early Years Settings Supporting Personal Social and Emotional Development from 0–5

Towards a Philosophical Anthropology of Culture Naturalism Relativism and Skepticism

Towards a Philosophical Anthropology of Culture Naturalism Relativism and Skepticism

This book explores the question of what it means to be a human being through sustained and original analyses of three important philosophical topics: relativism skepticism and naturalism in the social sciences. Kevin M. Cahill’s approach involves an original employment of historical and ethnographic material that is both conceptual and empirical in order to address relevant philosophical issues. Specifically while Cahill avoids interpretative debates he develops an approach to philosophical critique based on Cora Diamond’s and James Conant’s work on the early Wittgenstein. This makes possible the use of a concept of culture that avoids the dogmatism that not only typifies traditional metaphysics but also frequently mars arguments from ordinary language or phenomenology. This is especially crucial for the third part of the book which involves a cultural-historical critique of the ontology of the self in Stanley Cavell’s work on skepticism. In pursuing this strategy the book also mounts a novel and timely defense of the interpretivist tradition in the philosophy of the social sciences. Towards a Philosophical Anthropology of Culture will be of interest to researchers working on the philosophy of the social sciences Wittgenstein and philosophical anthropology. Materializing Memory in Art and Popular Culture

Materializing Memory in Art and Popular Culture

Memory matters. It matters because memory brings the past into the present and opens it up to the future. But it also matters literally because memory is mediated materially. Materiality is the stuff of memory. Meaningful objects that we love (or hate) function not only as aide-mémoire but are integral to memory. Drawing on previous scholarship on the interrelation of memory and materiality this book applies recent theories of new materialism to explore the material dimension of memory in art and popular culture. The book’s underlying premise is twofold: on the one hand memory is performed mediated and stored through the material world that surrounds us; on the other hand inanimate objects and things also have agency on their own which affects practices of memory as well as forgetting. Housing Careers Intergenerational Support and Family Relations

Housing Careers Intergenerational Support and Family Relations

In this comprehensive volume authors from across the social sciences explore how housing wealth transfers have impacted the integration of families society and the economy with a focus on the (re)negotiation of the ‘generational contract’. While housing has always been central to the realization and reproduction of families more recently the mutual embedding of home and family has become more obvious as realignments in housing markets employment and welfare states have worked together to undermine housing access for new households enhancing intergenerational interdependencies. More families have thus become involved in smoothening the routes of younger adult members into and up the ‘housing ladder’. While intergenerational support appears to have become much more widespread it remains highly differentiated across countries cities and regions as well as uneven between social and income classes. This book addresses the increasing role that family support and intergenerational transfers in particular are playing in sustaining the formation of new households and the transition of young adults towards social and economic autonomy. The authors draw on diverse international cases and a variety of methodologies in order to advance our understanding of housing as a key driver of contemporary social relations and inequalities. Cyber Resilience

Cyber Resilience

Modern cyber systems acquire more emergent system properties as far as their complexity increases: cyber resilience controllability self-organization proactive cyber security and adaptability. Each of the listed properties is the subject of the cybernetics research and each subsequent feature makes sense only if there is a previous one. Cyber resilience is the most important feature of any cyber system especially during the transition to the sixth technological stage and related Industry 4. 0 technologies: Artificial Intelligence (AI) Cloud and foggy computing 5G + IoT/IIoT Big Data and ETL Q-computing Blockchain VR/AR etc. We should even consider the cyber resilience as a primary one because the mentioned systems cannot exist without it. Indeed without the sustainable formation made of the interconnected components of the critical information infrastructure it does not make sense to discuss the existence of 4. 0 Industry cyber-systems. In case when the cyber security of these systems is mainly focused on the assessment of the incidents' probability and prevention of possible security threats the cyber resilience is mainly aimed at preserving the targeted behavior and cyber systems' performance under the conditions of known (about 45 %) as well as unknown (the remaining 55 %) cyber attacks. This monograph shows that modern Industry 4. 0. Cyber systems do not have the required cyber resilience for targeted performance under heterogeneous mass intruder cyber-attacks. The main reasons include a high cyber system structural and functional complexity a potential danger of existing vulnerabilities and “sleep” hardware and software tabs as well as an inadequate efficiency of modern models methods and tools to ensure cyber security reliability response and recovery.
