Encounters with Jazz on Television in Cold War Era Portugal 1954–1974

Encounters with Jazz on Television in Cold War Era Portugal: 1954–1974 explores the relationship between jazz and television by investigating the experiences of performers and producers in one of the last European colonial states (Portugal) during a period of political and social repression and global isolation. This new model of systemic analysis reveals a paradoxical interrelationship between state-controlled television and international media industries highlighting the space where these two forces collide and locating television jazz production within an important cultural milieu with a lasting impact on Portuguese society. From the days of the first feasibility studies for a proposed public television service in 1954 to the military coup that overthrew the far-right Estado Novo regime in 1974 this book maps the institutionalization of jazz in Portugal as a social and musical practice one that played a significant role in fostering cultural diversity. It looks at the musicians repertoires production processes broadcasts policies and strategies that fuelled the launch of Radiotelevisão Portuguesa (RTP) and the rise of television an indispensable new medium that granted Portuguese people access to the wider world – a world curated by public television producers with individual cultural political and aesthetic attitudes to influence the dissemination of jazz. In exploring the connections between these national and international jazz scenes Encounters with Jazz on Television in Cold War Era Portugal: 1954–1974 addresses opportunities for in-depth comparison of the Portuguese experience with that of other countries situating Cold War era Portuguese television jazz broadcasting as part of a bigger still unwritten story. | Encounters with Jazz on Television in Cold War Era Portugal 1954–1974

Psychoanalysing Ambivalence with Freud and Lacan On and Off the Couch

Psychoanalysing Ambivalence with Freud and Lacan On and Off the Couch

Taking a deep dive into contemporary Western culture this book suggests we are all fundamentally ambivalent beings. A great deal has been written about how to love – to be kinder more empathic a better person and so on. But trying to love without dealing with our ambivalence with our hatred is often a recipe for failure. Any attempt therefore to love our neighbour as ourselves – or even for that matter to love ourselves – must recognise that we love where we hate and we hate where we love. Psychoanalysis beginning with Freud has claimed that to be in two minds about something or someone is characteristic of human subjectivity. Owens and Swales trace the concept of ambivalence through its various iterations in Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis in order to question how the contemporary subject deals with its ambivalence. They argue that experiences of ambivalence are in present-day cultural life increasingly excised or foreclosed and that this foreclosure has symptomatic effects at the individual as well as social level. Owens and Swales examine ambivalence as it is at work in mourning in matters of sexuality and in our enjoyment under neoliberalism and capitalism. Above all the authors consider how today’s ambivalent subject relates to the racially religiously culturally or sexually different neighbour as a result of the current societal dictate of complete tolerance of the other. In this vein Owens and Swales argue that ambivalence about one’s own jouissance is at the very roots of xenophobia. Peppered with relevant and stimulating examples from clinical work film television politics and everyday life Psychoanalysing Ambivalence breathes new life into an old concept and will appeal to any reader academic or clinician with an interest in psychoanalytic ideas. | Psychoanalysing Ambivalence with Freud and Lacan On and Off the Couch

Heidegger on Technology

Heidegger on Technology

This collection offers the first comprehensive and definitive account of Martin Heidegger’s philosophy of technology. It does so through a detailed analysis of canonical texts and recently published primary sources on two crucial concepts in Heidegger’s later thought: Gelassenheit and Gestell. Gelassenheit translated as ‘releasement’ and Gestell often translated as ‘enframing’ stand as opposing ideas in Heidegger’s work whereby the meditative thinking of Gelassenheit counters the dangers of our technological framing of the world in Gestell. After opening with a scholarly overview of Heidegger’s philosophy of technology as a whole this volume focuses on important Heideggerian critiques of science technology and modern industrialized society as well as Heidegger’s belief that transformations in our thought processes enable us to resist the restrictive domain of modern techno-scientific practice. Key themes discussed in this collection include: the history development and defining features of modern technology; the relationship between scientific theories and their technological instantiations; the nature of human agency and the essence of education in the age of technology; and the ethical political and environmental impact of our current techno-scientific customs. This volume also addresses the connection between Heidegger’s critique of technology and his involvement with the Nazis. Finally and with contributions from a number of renowned Heidegger scholars the original essays in this collection will be of great interest to students of Philosophy Technology Studies the History of Science Critical Theory Environmental Studies Education Sociology and Political Theory. | Heidegger on Technology

Barbot on Guinea Volume II

Barbot on Guinea Volume II

Jean Barbot who served as a commercial agent on French slave-trading voyages to West Africa in 1678-9 and 1681-2 in 1683 began an account of the Guinea coast based partly on his voyage journals (only one of which is extant) and partly on previous printed sources. The work was interrupted by his flight to England as a Huguenot refugee in 1685 and not finished until 1688. When Barbot found that his lengthy French account could not be published he rewrote it in English enlarging it even further and then continually revising it up to his death in 1712. The manuscript was eventually published in 1732. Barbot's book had considerable influence on later European attitudes to Black Africa and the Atlantic slave trade and in modern writings on both subjects is frequently cited as evidence. The French account serves as the base for the present edition and is presented in English translation but additional material in the later English version is inserted. The edition concentrates on Barbot's original information. He copied much from earlier sources - this derived material is omitted but is identified in the notes. The original material mainly on Senegal Sierra Leone River Sess Gold Coast and the Calabars is extensively annotated not least with comparative references to other sources. Apart from its narrative interest the edition thus provides a starting point for the critical assessment of a range of early sources on Guinea. The edition opens with an introductory essay discussing Barbot's life and career and analysing his sources. Barbot provided a large number of his own drawings of topographical and ethnographical features in particular drawings of almost all of the European forts in Guinea. Many of these illustrations are reproduced. This volume covers the coast from the River Volta to Cape Lopez. The main pagination of this and the previous volume (2nd series 175) series is continuous. This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volume first published in 1991. | Barbot on Guinea Volume II
