Racial Justice and Nonviolence Education Building the Beloved Community One Block at a Time

Racial Justice and Nonviolence Education Building the Beloved Community One Block at a Time

This book examines the role that community-based educators in violence-affected cities play in advancing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ’s radical nonviolent vision for racial and social justice. This work argues that nonviolence education can help communities build capacity to disrupt and transform cycles of violence by recognizing that people impacted by violence are effective educators and vital knowledge producers who develop unique insights into racial oppression and other forms of systemic harm. This book focuses on informal education that takes place beyond school walls a type of education that too often remains invisible and undervalued in both civil society and scholarly research. It draws on thousands of hours of work with the Connecticut Center for Nonviolence (CTCN) a grassroots organization that presents an ideal case study of the implementation of King’s core principles of nonviolence in 21st-century urban communities. Stories of educators’ life-changing educational encounters their successes and failures and their understanding of the six principles of Kingian nonviolence animate the text. Each chapter delves into one of the six principles by introducing the reader to the lives of these educators providing a rich analysis of how educators teach each principle and sharing academic resources for thinking more deeply about each principle. Against the backdrop of today’s educational system in which reductive and caricatured treatments of King are often presented within the formal classroom CTCN’s work outside of the classroom takes a fundamentally different approach connecting King’s thinking around nonviolence principles to working for racial justice in cities deeply impacted by violence. This book will be of much interest to students of conflict resolution race studies politics and education studies as well as to practitioners in the field. | Racial Justice and Nonviolence Education Building the Beloved Community One Block at a Time

Fire Safety Law A Practical Guide for Leaseholders Building-Owners and Conveyancers

Fire Safety Law A Practical Guide for Leaseholders Building-Owners and Conveyancers

Fire Safety Law provides building-owners managers individual leaseholders mortgage-lenders landlords and anyone involved in the purchase or sale of a flat situated within a multi-occupied block with practical yet comprehensive and well-researched information regarding the subject of fire safety and the associated responsibilities obligations and rights. V. Charles Ward addresses in practical legal terms the responsibilities on building-owners to ensure that buildings are fire-safe for people who are living working or visiting those buildings and explains what protections are available to leaseholders faced with the costs of making their buildings fire-safe. The book begins with a summary of the lessons which have come from the Grenfell Inquiry before providing a practical overview of current fire-safety legislation relating to residential and commercial buildings. This legislative overview will include not only the 2005 Fire Safety Order as updated by the 2021 Fire Safety Act and the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 but will also include associated and emerging legislation and official guidance in relation to fire safety including gas and electrical safety regulation as well as the Building Safety Act 2022. The book will then pull apart a typical long-residential lease within a high-rise block to identify who is directly responsible for fire safety and explain how the costs of making good the fire-risk from defective cladding might be shared out between the ground-landlord and individual residential leaseholders. Having assessed the legal situation as regards existing high-rise leaseholders the book then addresses the additional ‘due diligence’ required by prospective purchasers of individual high-rise flats as well as estate agents mortgage lenders landlords and conveyancing lawyers to ensure that what they will be buying or lending money on is ‘fire-safe’ and that any associated costs are fully accounted for. | Fire Safety Law A Practical Guide for Leaseholders Building-Owners and Conveyancers

Transformative Propaganda Opening the Archives of the British Safety Council

Transformative Propaganda Opening the Archives of the British Safety Council

What do seat belts life jackets and anti-jack knife technology have in common? They were all the subjects of campaigns run by the British Safety Council since its inception in 1957. James Tye its charismatic founder and leader for nearly 40 years created the British Safety Council to bring about a transformation in how Great Britain viewed safety and health. In 1957 hundreds if not thousands of workers were killed in accidents and James marshalled every conceivable technique to save lives including PR stunts training lobbying for better laws and crucially what he called ‘propaganda’ in the form of posters and other communication tools. In 2014 a long-lost collection of posters papers and letters were found gathering dust in a warehouse. The British Safety Council wanting to mark its 60-year history and its role in reducing deaths at work decided to preserve the collection and commissioned historian Mike Esbester to trace the history of health and safety in Britain from the late 1960s through the posters and photographs of the time. Transformative Propaganda: Opening the Archives of the British Safety Council offers a fascinating and vivid insight into the social and political realities of the 1960s 1970s and 1980s through a wealth of historical documents press cuttings correspondence photographs and posters. It offers a truly extraordinary window onto the evolution of health and safety within the UK and richly deserves a place on the bookshelf of every safety professional. | Transformative Propaganda Opening the Archives of the British Safety Council

The Internet of Materials

The Internet of Materials

State-of-the-art flat structures called metasurfaces can filter and steer light and sound render an object completely invisible to electromagnetic waves and much more. They can deliver automation remote operation and advanced performance to a wide variety of existing systems with applications in communications medical imaging sensing and security. However for non-specialists individual metasurfaces are currently restricted to limited reusability and accessibility. This book brings together various scientific disciplines with the aim of outlining a programmable ‘plug-and-play’ metasurface. The book focuses on a recently proposed platform – known as the HyperSurface – that provides many electromagnetic functions of metasurfaces in a single structure which can be controlled and reconfigured by software. This revolutionary approach paves the way for new opportunities in wireless communications and programmable wireless environments: HyperSurfaces could link networks with objects and physical environments and create smarter systems that are far more responsive to user demands. Walls that absorb radiation or block digital eavesdropping and wireless long-distance charging of devices are among the many possibilities. The book aspires to provide the foundational knowledge for creating an Internet of Materials enabling smart environments at any scale – from indoor wireless communications to medical imaging equipment. Although the set of disciplines involved covers a considerable span we hope that the material will benefit experts and students alike. | The Internet of Materials

The Routledge Companion to Twentieth and Early Twenty-First Century Urban Design A History of Shifting Manifestoes Paradigms Generic Solut

The Routledge Companion to Twentieth and Early Twenty-First Century Urban Design A History of Shifting Manifestoes Paradigms Generic Solut

The Routledge Companion to Twentieth and Early Twenty-First Century Urban Design is a fully illustrated descriptive and explanatory history of the development of urban design ideas and paradigms of the past 150 years. The ideas and projects hypothetical and built range in scale from the city to the urban block level. The focus is on where the generic ideas originated the projects that were designed following their precepts the functions they address and/or afford and what we can learn from them. The morphology of a city—its built environment—evolves unselfconsciously as private and governmental investors self-consciously erect buildings and infrastructure in a pragmatic piecemeal manner to meet their own ends. Philosophers novelists architects and social scientists have produced myriad ideas about the nature of the built environment that they consider to be superior to those forms resulting from a laissez-faire attitude to urban development. Rationalist theorists dream of ideal futures based on assumptions about what is good; empiricists draw inspirations from what they perceive to be working well in existing situations. Both groups have presented their advocacies in manifestoes and often in the form of generic solutions or illustrative designs. This book traces the history of these ideas and will become a standard reference for scholars and students interested in the history of urban spaces including architects planners urban historians urban geographers and urban morphologists. | The Routledge Companion to Twentieth and Early Twenty-First Century Urban Design A History of Shifting Manifestoes Paradigms Generic Solut

The CAFE Book Engaging All Students in Daily Literacy Assessment and Instruction

The CAFE Book Engaging All Students in Daily Literacy Assessment and Instruction

For the past ten years Gail Boushey and Allison Behne worked with hundreds of teachers and students nationwide to gain insightsinto the best practices for reading instruction. Using their findings they developed The CAFE Book Expanded Second Edition: Engaging All Students in Daily Literacy Assessment and Instruction to share what their research has proven - that reading instruction is not about the setting or the book level but rather effective reading instruction is based off of what the student needs in that moment. With the release of The CAFE Book in 2009 the CAFE system (Comprehension Accuracy Flluency and expanding Vocabulary) has been implemented in classrooms all over the world. It changed the way educators assess teach and track student information and has positively impacted the way students learn practice and talk about reading. The CAFE Book Expanded Second Edition builds on the same research-based student-centered foundations but now includes: Seven Steps from Assessment to Instruction to plan data-driven classworkThe Instruction Protocol - a framework to guide your teaching and planning CAFE's Essential Elements resource to guide your understanding of student-focused instructionA revised CAFE menu and a checklist of skills vital for emerging readersReady Reference Guides that include when to teach the strategy options for differentiating methods and partner strategiesSignificantresources to help with lesson planning assessments and goal setting and parent involvementNew and improved forms for bothonline conferring notebook and a pencil/paper notebookto support more effective conferring with studentsThe CAFE Book Expanded Second Edition offers a variety of tools to structure your literacy block and create an environment where your students are engaged readers and writers with resources that set them up for success.
