The Poems of Robert Browning: Volume Five The Ring and the Book Books 1-6

The Poems of Robert Browning: Volume Five The Ring and the Book Books 1-6

The Ring and the Book published serially in 1868–9 is one of the most daring and innovative poems in the English language. The story is based on the trial of an Italian nobleman Guido Franceschini for the murder of his wife Pompilia in Rome in 1698. Browning’s discovery of the ‘old yellow book’ a bundle of legal documents and letters relating to the trial on a second-hand market stall in Florence sparked an imaginative engagement with this sordid tale of domestic cruelty adultery and greed which grew through four years of arduous labour into an epic peopled not by gods and warriors but by concrete recognisably human beings. Fusing the technique of the dramatic monologue the form he had made his own with the grandeur of classical epic and the vivid realism of the modern novel Browning created a unique hybrid form that allowed him not only to bring to life an entire historical period but also to reflect on the process of artistic creation itself – the forging of the golden ‘ring’ of the poem from the ‘pure crude fact’ of its historical original. This edition comprising volumes 5 and 6 in the acclaimed Longman Annotated English Poets edition of Browning’s poems does full justice to the scope and depth of Browning’s achievement. The headnote in volume 5 gives an authoritative account of the poem’s composition publication sources and reception making use of hitherto unpublished letters and textual material. In addition to giving readers help where needed with historical and linguistic comprehension the notes track Browning’s formidable range of allusion from the most erudite to the most vulgar. The appendices in volume 6 present a selection from the original sources a list of variants from extant proofs and key passages from Browning’s fascinating and revealing correspondence with one of the earliest readers of the poem Julia Wedgwood. The aim is to enable readers not just to understand the poem as an object of study but to take pleasure in its abounding intellectual and emotional energies. | The Poems of Robert Browning: Volume Five The Ring and the Book Books 1-6

Kaplan's Principles of Plant Morphology

Kaplan's Principles of Plant Morphology

Kaplan's Principles of Plant Morphology defines the field of plant morphology providing resources examples and theoretical constructs that illuminate the foundations of plant morphology and clearly outline the importance of integrating a fundamental understanding of plant morphology into modern research in plant genetics development and physiology. As research on developmental genetics and plant evolution emerges an understanding of plant morphology is essential to interpret developmental and morphological data. The principles of plant morphology are being brought into studies of crop development biodiversity and evolution during climate change and increasingly such researchers are turning to old texts to uncover information about historic research on plant morphology. Hence there is great need for a modern reference and textbook that highlights past studies and provides the synthesis of data necessary to drive our future research in plant morphological and developmental evolution. Key Features Numerous illustrations demonstrating the principles of plant morphology Historical context for interpretations of more recent genetic data Firmly rooted in the principles of studying plant form and function Provides evolutionary framework without relying on evolutionary interpretations for plant form Only synthetic treatment of plant morphology on the market Related Titles Les D. Routledge Handbook of Chinese Architecture Social Production of Buildings and Spaces in History

This handbook representing the collaboration of 40 scholars provides a multi-faceted exploration of roughly 6 000 years of Chinese architecture from ancient times to the present. This volume combines a broad-spectrum approach with a thematic framework for investigating Chinese architecture integrating previously fragmented topics and combining the scholarship of all major periods of Chinese history. By organizing its approach into five parts this handbook: Traces the practices and traditions of ancient China from imperial authority to folk culture Unveils a rich picture of early modern and republican China revealing that modernization was already beginning to emerge Describes the social intellectual ideological and formal enterprises of socialist architecture Frames a window on a complex and changing contemporary China by focusing on autonomy state practices and geopolitics of design ultimately identifying its still evolving position on the world stage Examines the existing cultural and political theories to highlight potential avenues for future transformations in Chinese architecture that also retain Chinese identity Providing a pioneering combination of ancient and modern Chinese architecture in one coherent study this book is a must-read for scholars students and educators of Chinese architecture architectural history and theory and the architecture of Asia. | Routledge Handbook of Chinese Architecture Social Production of Buildings and Spaces in History
