Introductory Physics for the Life Sciences: Mechanics (Volume One)

This textbook provides an accessible introduction to physics for undergraduate students in the life sciences including those majoring in all branches of biology biochemistry and psychology and students working on pre-professional programs such as pre-medical pre-dental and physical therapy. The text is geared for the algebra-based physics course often named College Physics in the United States. The order of topics studied are such that most of the problems in the text can be solved with the methods of Statics or Dynamics. That is they require a free body diagram the application of Newton’s Laws and any necessary kinematics. Constructing the text with a standardized problem-solving methodology simplifies this aspect of the course and allows students to focus on the application of physics to the study of biological systems. Along the way students apply these techniques to find the tension in a tendon the sedimentation rate of red blood cells in haemoglobin the torques and forces on a bacterium employing a flagellum to propel itself through a viscous fluid and the terminal velocity of a protein moving in a Gel Electrophoresis device. This is part one of a two-volume set; volume 2 introduces students to the conserved-quantities and applies these problem-solving techniques to topics in Thermodynamics Electrical Circuits Optics and Atomic and Nuclear Physics always with continued focus on biological applications. Key Features: Organised and centred around analysis techniques not traditional Mechanics and E&M. Presents a unified approach in a different order meaning that the same laboratories equipment and demonstrations can be used when teaching the course. Demonstrates to students that the analysis and concepts they are learning are critical to the understanding of biological systems. | Introductory Physics for the Life Sciences: Mechanics (Volume One)

Soil-Foundation-Structure Interaction

Soil-Foundation-Structure Interaction

Soil-Foundation-Structure Interaction contains selected papers presented at the International Workshop on Soil-Foundation-Structure Interaction held in Auckland New Zealand from 26-27 November 2009. The workshop was the venue for an international exchange of ideas disseminating information about experiments numerical models and practical engineering problems relating to soil-foundation-structure interaction. A topic of long standing interest to both structural and geotechnical engineers is what is traditionally known as soil-structure interaction (SSI). For a long period this has involved linear elastic interaction between the foundation and the underlying soil and the appropriate analysis is well developed for both static and dynamic interaction. In recent years there has been a growing interest in considering nonlinear soil-foundation interaction in the design of shallow foundations both for static and earthquake loading. To distinguish these approaches from the classical linear elastic soil-structure interaction the term soil-foundation-structure-interaction (SFSI) has been coined recently. The development of various approaches is occurring rapidly in many research groups all over the world with the inclusion of nonlinear structure and nonlinear soil interaction using FEM-based numerical methods as well as the use of shallow foundation macro-elements as an alternative to using finite elements. The workshop brought together representatives from several of these groups to review the current state of development discuss the potential for application in foundation design and consider how work in this area might develop in the next few years. The emphasis in the workshop was on application of these ideas to the foundation design process. The book will be much of interest to post-graduates in Foundation Engineering Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering Earthquake Engineering and Advanced Structural Dynamics.

The Astronomy Revolution 400 Years of Exploring the Cosmos

The Astronomy Revolution 400 Years of Exploring the Cosmos

Some 400 years after the first known patent application for a telescope by Hans Lipperhey The Astronomy Revolution: 400 Years of Exploring the Cosmos surveys the effects of this instrument and explores the questions that have arisen out of scientific research in astronomy and cosmology. Inspired by the international New Vision 400 conference held in Beijing in October 2008 this interdisciplinary volume brings together expanded and updated contributions from 26 esteemed conference speakers and invited others. Looking beyond questions of science to the role of moral responsibility in human civilizations the book offers the unique vantage points of contributions from both Eastern and Western cultures. Extensively illustrated in full color this book consists of six parts. Aimed at young scientists the first part presents perspectives on creativity and technology in scientific discovery. In the second part contributors examine how the telescope has impacted our knowledge of the Universe—from the formation of galaxies to the death of stars. The third part of the book outlines some of the challenges we face in understanding dark matter dark energy black holes and cosmic rays and the fourth part discusses new technologies that will be useful in attacking new and unresolved questions. The fifth part of the book examines the intellectual impact that the telescope has had on society in China and in the West. The book concludes with an investigation of big questions: What is the origin of the laws of physics as we know them? Are these laws the same everywhere? How do these scientific laws relate to the moral laws of society? Does what we know depend on cultural ways of asking the questions? Is there life elsewhere? And what about the questions that science cannot answer? Celebrating the historical significance of the telescope this unique book seeks to inspire all those involved or interested i | The Astronomy Revolution 400 Years of Exploring the Cosmos
