Climate Change Impacts on the Stability of Small Tidal Inlets

Climate Change Impacts on the Stability of Small Tidal Inlets

This work explores coastal zones in the vicinity of tidal inlets which are commonly utilized for navigation sand mining waterfront developments and fishing and recreation are under particularly high population pressure and will only be exacerbated by foreshadowed climate change (CC). Although few recent studies have investigated CC impacts on very large tidal inlet systems the nature and magnitude of CC impacts on the more commonly found small tidal inlets (STIs) remains practically un-investigated to date. The combination of pre-dominant occurrence in developing countries socio-economic relevance and low community resilience general lack of data and high sensitivity to seasonal forcing makes STIs potentially very vulnerable to CC impacts. This study was undertaken to develop methods and tools that can provide insights on potential CC impacts on STIs and to demonstrate their application to assess these CC impacts. Two process based snap-shot modeling approaches for data poor and data rich environments are used to assess CC impacts and an innovative reduced complexity model is developed to obtain rapid predictions of CC impacts on the STI’s stability. Results show that STIs are unlikely to change their types but that their stability level is likely to change under CC impacts. The main driver for the change is the future variations in wave directions not SLR as is commonly thought. | Climate Change Impacts on the Stability of Small Tidal Inlets

A Climate of Risk Precautionary Principles Catastrophes and Climate Change

A Climate of Risk Precautionary Principles Catastrophes and Climate Change

We are living in a climate of risk. Our way of life imposes risks on ourselves and others. We are causing climatic changes that have the potential to change radically the conditions under which both we – the present generation – and future generations will live. While we are now quite certain that climate change is happening we are unsure of exactly what will happen and when given different emissions and policy scenarios. We are therefore in a position where we must decide what to do about the risks climate change threatens in the face of a range of uncertainties In this book Lauren Hartzell-Nichols provides guidance in the face of this uncertainty by offering an in-depth discussion of how and why we ought to take a precautionary approach to climate policy namely by appeal to a Catastrophic Precautionary Principle and Catastrophic Precautionary Decision-Making Framework. By examining the way in which climate change is harmful Hartzell-Nichols shows how precaution does have a meaningful role to play in moving climate policy forward if we reconsider what precaution is about before too quickly appealing to precaution as a reason or justification for action. A Climate of Risk takes a philosophically grounded interdisciplinary approach that will appeal to a broad scholarly and policy-oriented audience. Hartzell-Nichols’s reinterpretation of the precautionary principle enables precaution to be more effectively leveraged as a driver of action on climate change. | A Climate of Risk Precautionary Principles Catastrophes and Climate Change

The Financialization of Housing A political economy approach

The Financialization of Housing A political economy approach

Due to the financialization of housing in today’s market housing risks are increasingly becoming financial risks. Financialization refers to the increasing dominance of financial actors markets practices measurements and narratives. It also refers to the resulting structural transformation of economies firms states and households. This book asserts the centrality of housing to the contemporary capitalist political economy and places housing at the centre of the financialization debate. A global wall of money is looking for High-Quality Collateral (HQC) investments and housing is one of the few asset classes considered HQC. This explains why housing is increasingly becoming financialized but it does not explain its timing politics and geography. Presenting a diverse range of case studies from the US the UK the Netherlands Germany Italy and Spain the chapters in this book include coverage of the role of the state as the driver of financialization processes and the part played by local and national histories and institutions. This cutting edge volume will pave the way for future research in the area. Where housing used to be something local or national the two-way coupling of housing to finance has been one crucial element in the recent crisis. It is time to reconsider the financialization of both homeownership and social housing. This book will be of interest to those who study international economics economic geography and financialization. | The Financialization of Housing A political economy approach
