Conservation and Restoration of Built Heritage A History of Conservation Culture and its More Recent Developments

Conservation and Restoration of Built Heritage A History of Conservation Culture and its More Recent Developments

The word conservation when used in the context of the preservation of built heritage implies an intrinsically complex concept that evolved over time since it has been influenced by the perception of history throughout time. This volume emphasises why an understanding of the cultural evolution of the conservation approach must be considered a prerequisite for architects and engineers if they are to cooperate in full harmony with historic-artistic culture for the preservation of global built heritage. In particular the volume highlights how during the second half of the last century the preservation process also involved engineering – the science of making practical applications of knowledge – which for a long time made an uncritical use of techniques and materials and devised interventions on historical heritage that were heavily invasive. The volume also devotes special attention to the problems related to seismic risk to which Italy Greece and Portugal are particularly prone. Problems that emerge during the crisis and reconstruction phases are dealt with in detail as is scheduled maintenance as this latter approach always constitutes an improvement in the performance of the monument and is the most appropriate tool for the conservation of the built heritage. Finally the volume collects examples of building restoration with case studies of many outstanding monuments. The work will appeal to professionals and academics in the broader fields of civil engineering (both geotechnical and structural engineering) architecture art history the history of architecture restoration and cultural heritage management. This book will: Provide a critical reading of the history of conservation; Discuss materials and techniques of ancient architecture; Cover seismic vulnerability and preservation of the historic integrity of the monument; Advocate an approach based on programmed maintenance; Feature numerous case histories including St Mark’s Basilica in Venice and the complex restoration of the cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris. | Conservation and Restoration of Built Heritage A History of Conservation Culture and its More Recent Developments

NATO and Collective Defence in the 21st Century An Assessment of the Warsaw Summit

NATO and Collective Defence in the 21st Century An Assessment of the Warsaw Summit

This book presents a cutting-edge assessment of NATO's collective defence strategies in the immediate aftermath of the July 2016 NATO Warsaw Summit. Collective defence and deterrence came back on the agenda at the 2014 Wales Summit following the Russian annexation of Crimea and was in many respects a game changer for NATO. The Warsaw Summit was a follow-up and operationalization of the Wales Summit as well as adding further initiatives to the agenda. But is NATO delivering? This book provides a thorough assessment of the on-going debates and discussions taking place within and outside of NATO in Europe and North America. In its return to deterrence NATO is confronted with challenges relating to strategic thinking capability development and the role of nuclear weapons. It has also raised questions about the future prospects for NATO membership for countries such as Sweden and Finland with broader implications for the security situation in the Baltic region. Central to all this is of course NATO’s relationship with Russia and questions of a new security dilemma in turning bringing to the fore the challenge of maintaining an appropriate balance between deterrence and dialogue. The chapters in this volume address these questions and provide a much-needed analysis of the results of the NATO Warsaw Summit. This book will be of interest to policymakers and students of NATO international security European Politics security studies and IR in general. | NATO and Collective Defence in the 21st Century An Assessment of the Warsaw Summit

Contested Territories and International Law A Comparative Study of the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict and the Aland Islands Precedent

Contested Territories and International Law A Comparative Study of the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict and the Aland Islands Precedent

This book considers the possibilities for resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict in the context of comparative international law. The armed conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the territory of the Nagorno-Karabakh has been on the peace and security agenda since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. This volume draws parallels with a similar situation between Sweden and Finland over sovereignty of the Aland Islands in the early 20th century. Resolved in 1921 it is argued that this represents a model autonomy solution for territorial conflicts that include questions of territorial integrity self-determination and minority rights. The book compares both conflict situations from the international law perspective finding both commonalities and dissimilarities. It advances the application of the solution found in the Aland Islands precedent as a model for the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict and provides appropriate recommendations for its implementation. The book will be of interest to academics researchers and policymakers in the areas of international law and security conflict resolution and international relations. The Routledge Handbook of Philosophy of Biodiversity

The Routledge Handbook of Philosophy of Biodiversity

Biological diversity - or ‘biodiversity’ - is the degree of variation of life within an ecosystem. It is a relatively new topic of study but has grown enormously in recent years. Because of its interdisciplinary nature the very concept of biodiversity is the subject of debate amongst philosophers biologists geographers and environmentalists. The Routledge Handbook of Philosophy of Biodiversity is an outstanding reference source to the key topics and debates in this exciting subject. Comprising twenty-three chapters by a team of international contributors the Handbook is divided into six parts: Historical and sociological contexts focusing on the emergence of the term and early attempts to measure biodiversity What is biodiversity? How should biodiversity be defined? How can biodiversity include entities at the edge of its boundaries including microbial diversity and genetically engineered organisms? Why protect biodiversity? What can traditional environmental ethics contribute to biodiversity? Topics covered include anthropocentrism intrinsic value and ethical controversies surrounding the economics of biodiversity Measurement and methodology: including decision-theory and conservation the use of indicators for biodiversity and the changing use of genetics in biodiversity conservation Social contexts and global justice: including conservation and community conflicts and biodiversity and cultural values Biodiversity and other environmental values: How does biodiversity relate to other values like ecological restoration or ecological sustainability? Essential reading for students and researchers in philosophy environmental science and environmental studies and conservation management it will also be extremely useful to those studying biodiversity in subjects such as biology and geography.
