Nutrition and Type 2 Diabetes Etiology and Prevention

Nutrition and Type 2 Diabetes Etiology and Prevention

Over the past two decades type 2 diabetes has emerged as a leading threat to global health and the considerable overlap in obesity and diabetes trends are likely no coincidence. While the underpinnings for both etiologies are linked to lifestyles particularly dietary and physical activity patterns determining optimal approaches for preventing and managing type 2 diabetes using dietary composition remains a challenge. Nutrition and Type 2 Diabetes: Etiology and Prevention rigorously examines various perspectives on diet and type 2 diabetes. The book presents a comprehensive description and evaluation of the central research to date primarily in humans on the macronutrients and their subclasses micronutrients foods beverages and overall dietary patterns with respect to the risk of type 2 diabetes. It addresses the mediating/mechanistic role of obesity and body composition throughout the text where appropriate. The chapter authors all leading researchers in the field discuss fundamental nutritional principles applied to the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes as well as applied behavioral studies on nutrition and diabetes for each subject area. The depth and breadth of this book includes aspects of the food synergy model for understanding the complicated pathways between nutrition dietary habits and risk for type 2 diabetes. It also examines the effects of artificially sweetened beverages and coffee. This reference provides a review of the science on the potential impact of many components of dietary behavior and nutritional properties on etiology and risk for this disease knowledge that is essential for formulating informed approaches to public health progress in this area. | Nutrition and Type 2 Diabetes Etiology and Prevention

Women in Mycenaean Greece The Linear B Tablets from Pylos and Knossos

Women in Mycenaean Greece The Linear B Tablets from Pylos and Knossos

Women in Mycenaean Greece is the first book-length study of women in the Linear B tablets from Mycenaean Greece and the only to collect and compile all the references to women in the documents of the two best attested sites of Late Bronze Age Greece - Pylos on the Greek mainland and Knossos on the island of Crete. The book offers a systematic analysis of women’s tasks holdings and social and economic status in the Linear B tablets dating from the 14th and 13th centuries BCE identifying how Mycenaean women functioned in the economic institutions where they were best attested - production property control land tenure and cult. Analysing all references to women in the Mycenaean documents the book focuses on the ways in which the economic institutions of these Bronze Age palace states were gendered and effectively extends the framework for the study of women in Greek antiquity back more than 400 years. Throughout the book seeks to establish whether gender practices were uniform in the Mycenaean states or differed from site to site and to gauge the relationship of the roles and status of Mycenaean women to their Archaic and Classical counterparts to test if the often-proposed theories of a more egalitarian Bronze Age accurately reflect the textual evidence. The Linear B tablets offer a unique if under-utilized point of entry into women’s history in ancient Greece documenting nearly 2000 women performing over fifty task assignments. From their decipherment in 1952 one major gap in the scholarly record remained: a full accounting of the women who inhabited the palace states and their tasks ranks and economic contributions. Women in Mycenaean Greece fills that gap recovering how class rank and other social markers created status hierarchies among women how women as a group functioned relative to men and where different localities conformed or diverged in their gender practices. | Women in Mycenaean Greece The Linear B Tablets from Pylos and Knossos

Politics in The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau Precolonial Influence on the Postcolonial State

Politics in The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau Precolonial Influence on the Postcolonial State

This book explores how precolonial political traditions and practices shape modern-day politics in The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau. The precolonial Kaabu empire dominated the region for over 300 years leaving a rich oral and ritual culture that emphasized the importance of a ruler’s legitimacy among the general population. This book traces how postcolonial political administrations and Justice Integrity and Truth (JIT) movements have mobilized to reclaim reinvent and subvert traditional Kabunka norms of statecraft to prove their political legitimacy. It shows how cultural memory oral arts and musical forms can be used to express ideals of leadership and followership and in the process create various conversations and debates about politics and society social attitudes and morality. In doing so the book captures how the latent but influential social and political practices from Kaabu are reclaimed reproduced or subverted to contribute to the evolving nature of political rhetoric in these two countries. Whereas many studies of the state in Africa take Western democratic principles as a starting point this book provides important evidence on the continuity of precolonial political culture along African’s west coast. It will be of interest to researchers studying politics history and anthropology both within the region and elsewhere in Africa. | Politics in The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau Precolonial Influence on the Postcolonial State
