Everyday Ethnicity in Sri Lanka Up-country Tamil Identity Politics

Everyday Ethnicity in Sri Lanka Up-country Tamil Identity Politics

Focusing on notions of diaspora identity and agency this book examines ethnicity in war-torn Sri Lanka. It highlights the historical development and negotiation of a new identification of Up-country Tamil amidst Sri Lanka’s violent ethnic politics. Over the past thirty years Up-country (Indian) Tamils generally have tried to secure their vision of living within a multi-ethnic Sri Lanka not within Tamil Eelam the separatist dream that ended with the civil war in 2009. Exploring Sri Lanka within the deep history of colonial-era South Asian plantation diasporas the book argues Up-country Tamils form a diaspora next-door to their ancestral homeland. It moves beyond simplistic Sinhala-Tamil binaries and shows how Sri Lanka’s ethnic troubles actually have more in common with similar battles that diasporic Indians have faced in Fiji and Trinidad than with Hindu-Muslim communalism in neighbouring India Pakistan and Bangladesh. Shedding new light on issues of agency citizenship displacement and re-placement within the formation of diasporic communities and identities this book demonstrates the ways that culture workers including politicians trade union leaders academics and NGO workers have facilitated the development of a new identity as Up-country Tamil. It is of interest to academics working in the fields of modern South Asia diaspora violence post-conflict nations religion and ethnicity. | Everyday Ethnicity in Sri Lanka Up-country Tamil Identity Politics

Handbook of Nutraceuticals Volume II Scale-Up Processing and Automation

Handbook of Nutraceuticals Volume II Scale-Up Processing and Automation

Due in part to an absence of universally accepted standardization methods nutraceuticals and functional foods face regulatory ignorance marketing incompetence and ethical impunity. Even though many researchers believe that there is a connection between nutraceuticals and functional foods and reduced health care expenses as well as disease prevention the credibility and quality control challenge remains. The industry needs more standardized testing reliable reproducible clinical studies to prove the efficacies of products in vivo and in-process controls to maintain universal product quality. The first volume of the Handbook of Nutraceuticals re-defined Nutraceuticals covering the regulatory aspect as well as insisting on the cGMP’s and SOP’s for the nutraceutical manufacturing. This second volume focuses on the scale up processing and automation of nutraceutical production under cGMP production regulations. It covers: Advancements in extraction methods Unit operations involved in scaling up and processing Rheological and flow properties of products as characterization parameters Fortification and value enhancement using nanotechnology Green concepts in food industry Flavoring of nutraceuticals Clinical batch nutraceutical manufacturing New technologies to prevent counterfeiting Automation in nutraceutical industry The nutraceutical market is at the crossroads. With a nearly $200 billion market for nutraceuticals and functional foods by end of 2013 and promising developments in product design and discovery the industry must be ready for intense scrutiny. The standardization of testing clinical studies and adherence to rigorous industry and scientific methods is necessary for the advancement acceptance and development of high quality effective nutraceuticals. With contributions from leading authorities this book brings together hundreds of years of combined experience to provide guidance on how to increase the quality and credibility of nutraceutical products. | Handbook of Nutraceuticals Volume II Scale-Up Processing and Automation

Environmental Ethical and Economical Issues of Nanotechnology

Environmental Ethical and Economical Issues of Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology is moving out of its comfort zone of scientific discourse. As new products go to market and national and international organizations roll out public-engagement programs on nanotechnology to discuss environmental and health issues various sectors of the public are beginning to discuss what the controversy is all about. Nongovernmental organizations have long since reacted; however now the social sciences have begun to study the cultural phenomenon of nanotechnology thus extending discourses and opening out nanotechnology to whole new social dimensions. These dimensions and their newly constructed imaginings around nanotechnology intersect with the ecology health governance economy and illusory futures. There is always a need for more than just an ELSI (ethical legal and social implications) sideshow within nanotechnology. The collective public imaginings of nanotechnology include tangles of science and science fiction local enterprises and global transformation all looking forward toward a sustainable future while looking back on the past debates on science and nature. This book highlights the environmental health and economical concerns of nanotechnology and discusses its future research directions. It provides academia and industry a high-tech start-up that will revolutionize modern practices. With little and outdated literature available on the topic this timely book will be helpful for the readers as it thoroughly covers the environmental ethical and economical issues of nanotechnology.

IoT Benefits and Growth Opportunities for the Telecom Industry Key Technology Drivers for Companies

IoT Benefits and Growth Opportunities for the Telecom Industry Key Technology Drivers for Companies

This critical and forward-looking book features: An assessment of the impact of Internet of Things (IoT) on the telecom industry’s revenue streams IoT-based business models in the telecom industry A PESTLE (political economic socio-cultural technological legal and environmental) analysis of the industry in relation to IoT Key technological drivers. It also features a case study of Bell Canada Enterprises (BCE) Inc. which highlights IoT-based business models in the industry. The study reveals that telecom operators have started implementing IoT projects however true revenue streams are yet to materialize. Ten IoT-based business models have been identified at BCE Inc. The book points out that operators do leverage existing infrastructure in terms of broadband fiber and mobile connectivity in part and resort to partnerships and acquisitions to acquire much-needed knowledge technology and smart devices. Concerning the effect of IoT on the telecoms’ revenue streams it was revealed that new entrants who are not necessarily in the telecom industry have impacted the old players’ revenue streams. OTT services like YouTube WhatsApp IPTV Netflix are the biggest culprits. Seven key technological drivers for IoT have been identified and include widespread wireless connectivity the availability and affordability of microcontrollers sensors and actuators the decreasing cost of bandwidth the recent implementation of IPv6 and the ongoing development of 5G network as well as the use of cloud computing and analytics. Finally the PESTLE analysis of the industry shows that the lack of a comprehensive political and regulatory framework still slows down IoT deployment. Interoperability security and privacy concerns are other constraints. Conversely general economic conditions in most developed and developing economies are favorable to the advancement of IoT technology. Governments are willing to subsidize R&D and have partnered with the private sector to speed up the roll-out process. | IoT Benefits and Growth Opportunities for the Telecom Industry Key Technology Drivers for Companies
