The Japanese Tea Ceremony – An Introduction

Human Resource Management in the Indian Tea Industry

Human Resource Management in the Indian Tea Industry

Liberalization Privatization and Globalization policy was advocated in India in 1991 under the supervision of P. V. Narasimha Rao the then Prime Minister of India. As a consequence the tea plantation industry was largely affected. It has confronted difficult competition because of the simplification of tariff barriers and the removal of the quantity restrictions on imports. The result of these on the share of export of Indian tea has declined the price has plunged and the profitability has reduced. To remain competitive in the market tea-producing companies have been forced to reduce the various costs especially labour costs. Due to this tea companies are not in a position to fulfil their responsibilities such as health safety welfare and working conditions to the workers. Besides improper recruitment of labour lack of proper training facilities and even irregularities in payment of wages have been increased significantly. As a result 1. 2 million workers in the tea industry to sustain themselves and their families have been adversely affected. This leads to labour unrest and the industry has become vulnerable. The final impact of all these issues spreads to the quality of tea and profitability of the industry in India. This book examines the existing human resource management practices in the Indian tea industry. It adopts a simplified yet comprehensive approach to showcase workforce management in the tea industry. This book will be of value to postgraduate students researchers HR professionals and policymakers in the fields of human resource management business history and industrial relations. | Human Resource Management in the Indian Tea Industry

Resilient Post Disaster Recovery through Building Back Better

Resilient Post Disaster Recovery through Building Back Better

Building Back Better (BBB) has been a popular slogan in disaster recovery efforts around the world including the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami the 2009 Samoan Tsunami the 2010 Haiti Earthquake and the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. BBB has recently been identified as one of four priorities of action for disaster risk reduction globally in the next 15 years by the United Nations Sendai Framework. However there has consistently been a mismatch and confusion in the interpretation of the phrase and what BBB encapsulates which has made proper implementation difficult and unsuccessful at times. This book explains the concept of Building Back Better as an innovative holistic approach to rebuilding a community following a disaster event in order to develop resilience. It begins by exploring the background development and definitions of BBB. The theory behind establishing BBB as a holistic concept is explained and the internationally recognised BBB Framework developed by the authors is introduced and described. Each of the components of the Framework are explained in detail with findings from international research and case studies from the US Haiti Indonesia Samoa Sri Lanka Vanuatu Gaza China Australia UK and New Zealand providing practical recommendations for implementation in recovery projects. There is a focus on the translation of BBB theory into practice to assist implementers to use the BBB Framework and BBB Indicators introduced in this book as an effective tool to plan and implement disaster recovery projects. This publication can be used as a handbook by government non-governmental and private industry practitioners to prepare for and implement post disaster recovery projects that benefit and strengthen local communities and as a core text on international Disaster and Energy Management courses. | Resilient Post Disaster Recovery through Building Back Better

Technology Humans and Discontent with Law The Quest for Better Governance

Technology Humans and Discontent with Law The Quest for Better Governance

This book analyses discontent with law and assesses the prospect of better governance by technology. In the first part of the book where the context is ‘low tech’ the range of discontent with law is examined; the underlying reasons for such discontent are identified (namely the human nature of the legal enterprise its reliance on rules and the pluralistic nature of human communities); and the reasonableness of such discontent is assessed. In the second part of the book where the context is ‘high-tech’ (with new tools becoming available to undertake governance functions) the question is whether discontent with law is further provoked or to the contrary is eased. While new technologies provoke further discontent with law’s claimed authority its ineffectiveness and its principles positions and policies they also promise more effective and efficient ways of achieving order. The book closes with some reflections on the ambivalence that humans might experience when faced with the choice between law’s governance and apparently better performing governance by technology. That law’s governance is imperfect is undeniable; that humans should quest after better governance is right; but the shape of our technological futures is unclear. This accessibly written book will appeal to scholars and students who are working in the broad and burgeoning field of law regulation and technology as well as to legal theorists political scientists and sociologists with interests in the impact of new technology. | Technology Humans and Discontent with Law The Quest for Better Governance

Strategic Listening How Managers Coworkers and Organizations Can Become Better at Listening

Strategic Listening How Managers Coworkers and Organizations Can Become Better at Listening

Listening is so simple yet so difficult. Many times listening is taken for granted. One could therefore say that listening is the forgotten part of communication. Although organizations have more digital and analog communication channels than ever too little time is spent listening to customers employees and other influential groups. It is a shame that listening is not given more attention as it is linked to many positive values. Examples include better conversations increased trust and confidence more outstanding commitment and job satisfaction lower absenteeism due to illness higher productivity and quality of work increased sales better relationships with customers and employees and many other positive effects. To the extent that listening takes place organizations rarely take a holistic approach to it. Strategic listening means a given objective for listening thoughts about who should listen when it should happen and so on. An organization’s listening must become a strategic issue to exploit the great potential of increased listening. This book provides answers to the following: Why is listening important? What are the barriers to listening? How can both individuals and organizations become better at listening? How can organizations develop strategic listening skills? How does one build a system to improve an organization’s strategic listening? | Strategic Listening How Managers Coworkers and Organizations Can Become Better at Listening

Shakespeare Adaptation Psychoanalysis Better than New

Shakespeare Adaptation Psychoanalysis Better than New

In Shakespeare Adaptation Psychoanalysis Matthew Biberman analyzes early adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays in order to identify and illustrate how both social mores and basic human psychology have changed in Anglo-American culture. Biberman contests the received wisdom that Shakespeare’s characters reflect essentially timeless truths about human nature. To the contrary he points out that Shakespeare’s characters sometimes act and think in ways that have become either stigmatized or simply outmoded. Through his study of the adaptations Biberman pinpoints aspects of Shakespeare’s thinking about behavior and psychology that no longer ring true because circumstances have changed so dramatically between his time and the time of the adaptation. He shows how the adaptors’ changes reveal key differences between Shakespeare’s culture and the culture that then supplanted it. These changes once grasped reveal retroactively some of the ways in which Shakespeare’s characters do not act and think as we might expect them to act and think. Thus Biberman counters Harold Bloom’s claim that Shakespeare fundamentally invents our sense of the human; rather he argues our sense of the human is equally bound up in the many ways that modern culture has come to resist or outright reject the behavior we see in Shakespeare’s plays. Ultimately our current sense of 'the human' is bound up not with the adoption of Shakespeare’s psychology perhaps but its adaption-or in psychoanalytic terms its repression and replacement. | Shakespeare Adaptation Psychoanalysis Better than New
