How to Find a Needle in a Haystack From the Insider Threat to Solo Perpetrators

How to Find a Needle in a Haystack From the Insider Threat to Solo Perpetrators

Searching for a needle in a haystack is an important task in several contexts of data analysis and decision-making. Examples include identifying the insider threat within an organization the prediction of failure in industrial production or pinpointing the unique signature of a solo perpetrator such as a school shooter or a lone wolf terrorist. It is a challenge different from that of identifying a rare event (e. g. a tsunami) or detecting anomalies because the needle is not easily distinguished from the haystack. This challenging context is imbued with particular difficulties from the lack of sufficient data to train a machine learning model through the identification of the relevant features and up to the painful price of false alarms which might cause us to question the relevance of machine learning solutions even if they perform well according to common performance criteria. In this book Prof. Neuman approaches the problem of finding the needle by specifically focusing on the human factor from solo perpetrators to insider threats. Providing for the first time a deep critical multidimensional and methodological analysis of the challenge the book offers data scientists and decision makers a deep scientific foundational approach combined with a pragmatic practical approach that may guide them in searching for a needle in a haystack. | How to Find a Needle in a Haystack From the Insider Threat to Solo Perpetrators

Love's Labor Essays on Women Equality and Dependency

Love's Labor Essays on Women Equality and Dependency

This new edition of Eva Feder Kittay’s feminist classic Love’s Labor explores how theories of justice and morality must be reconfigured when intersecting with care and dependency and the failure of policy towards women who engage in care work. The work is hailed as a major contribution to the development of an ethics of care. Where society is viewed as an association of equal and autonomous persons the work of caring for dependents figures neither in political theory nor in social policy. While some women have made many gains equality continues to elude many others as in large measure social institutions fail to take into account the dependency of childhood illness disability and frail old age and fail to adequately support those who care for dependents. Using a narrative of her experiences caring for her disabled daughter Eva Feder Kittay discusses the relevance of her analysis of dependency to significant cognitive disability. She explores the significance of dependency work by analyzing John Rawls' influential liberal theory and two examples of public policy—welfare reform and family leave—to show how theory and policy fail women when they miss the centrality of dependency to issues of justice. This second edition has updated material on care workers her adult disabled daughter and key changes in welfare reform. Using a mix of personal reflection and political argument this new edition of a classic text will continue to be an innovative and influential contribution to the debate on searching for greater equality and justice for women. Love’s Labor has spoken to audiences around the world and has had an impact on readers from many countries and in many disciplines: philosophy sociology disability studies nursing. It has been required and supplementary reading on many undergraduate courses on Ethics Feminist Ethics Gender and Religious Ethics Political Theory Bioethics and Disability Studies. It has been translated into Italian Japanese and Korean. | Love's Labor Essays on Women Equality and Dependency

Towards Good Lighting for the Stage Aesthetic Theory for Theatrical Lighting Design

Towards Good Lighting for the Stage Aesthetic Theory for Theatrical Lighting Design

Towards Good Lighting for the Stage: Aesthetic Theory for Theatrical Lighting Design explores the theoretical underpinnings of effective lighting design from conceptualization to live performance. Through an investigation of the author’s own aesthetic point of view—grounded in a broad investigation of art and design that blends pop culture and fine art theory and practice—this book documents the author’s thinking on the design process to fill the unexplored gap between an aesthetic philosophy and its expression in composition. Redefinitions of the artist artwork and spectator link beauty and artistic efficacy to arrive at a set of principles for assessment that demand that contemporary lighting design surpass utilitarian visibility to become a vital part of the total artwork that is a theatrical production. Inspired by the movements of the broader art and design worlds of the mid-19th century through present day—citing influences as diverse as Jennifer Tipton Lois Tyson Dieter Rams and Dave Hickey—this book charts a course from the artistic team’s dramaturgical work to a solo studio concept to the tech table. Engaging and wide-ranging Towards Good Lighting for the Stage synthesizes years of cross-disciplinary research and case studies of the author’s own work into provocative reading for practitioners of lighting design advanced students and academics as well as those interested in connecting theatrical practice aesthetic theory and visual art. | Towards Good Lighting for the Stage Aesthetic Theory for Theatrical Lighting Design
